I miss u/smowe

Absolutely NO disrespect intended to other members of the Nicks crew, but u/smowe being off the grid really seems to have a direct impact on engagement in this sub, no? Maybe I'm way off base, but--despite the fact that he's only commenting on a handful of posts on a day-to-day basis--that seems to be the salt that this place needs to really thrive, no? If I had mod access, I would love to cross-reference weekly engagement numbers with Shuyler's travel schedule (or maybe just his commenting activity) and look for correlation.

FBF / NBD - Love Shacks!!

I've been uncharacteristically swamped today, but I'm gonna be at the coast all weekend, and I didn't want to leave this until next week. I'll do my best to get a solid review in early next week, but in short: I'm overjoyed at how these boots turned out. Just more outstanding work from the entire Nicks team making these beautiful boots. I think the presence of Shackleton leather singlehandedly created the wildly uncharacteristic for August thunderstorms that rolled through South Texas yesterday evening--they got to see rain on their first day! Enjoy the photo dump.

I'm about to be in serious trouble

Man oh man. I've now got two boots in production and one that's already on its way to me (and this is after only having received a single pair of boots over the past three months). I know this is old hat to some of y'all, so I'm curious if you have any great go-to's for easing any tensions that may arise due to . . . ahem . . . perceptions of profligate spending on boots.

(And no . . . I definitely can't suggest that she go out and spend this kinda money on her own footwear--god forbid!)

Bathroom (and other) Friday Floors

It's been a minute, but here they are again. The runt of the Roanoke Denim gang (in a TNW 365). So dark! So many wrinkles! So little fading!

My problem ankle has been a little wonky this week, and even my Sage Chromepak T55 loggers don't seem able to fix it (though they do seem able to fix my medial ankle pain when it arises, they don't help my lateral ankle pain when it arises), so I'm trying a medial heel wedge in these, slotted under the back inside corner of the full-length Delta in there. So far today (without a ton of on-my-feet time) it seems to be helping to alleviate some of my issue.

Have a great weekend everybody!!

Happy Friday, Y'all

Cypress Light Grey - 4" MTO shorties - All eyes - White wedge - Jeans = Sugarcane Hawaii

Pics aren't great, but I was in a hurry this AM.

I really like how these are starting to look after a few months in the regular rotation (especially the weekends)--and they really look like great summer boots.

I have to admit though -- I just don't love this leather for this boot from a feel-on-the-foot standpoint. I think a lot of it has to do with them being low-tops. Something about the intense stiffness of it just doesn't seem correct, but it seems above average in thickness (pushing around 7oz at 2.7mm) and/or stiff for Cypress (the IBCs I have, while not slouches in temper, are much more relaxed and a bit thinner than this. If I were going to go back and do a 4" for the summer all over again, I think I would probably be happiest with the CXL or Admiral leathers that I think were in the offerings around that time. But hey--no complaints--these boots aren't going anywhere anytime soon, because I know they're going to keep getting better and better as time goes on.

Have a great weekend everybody!

FBF - Back in the Saddle

It’s a beautiful day for Aspen Acorn. I’m still really loving everything about these boots—especially the 5332 last.

Both the round Italian leather laces and the kilties are from Guarded Goods. I really love the design of these kilties—so much so that I designed a template to match so I could roll my own in the future. The lace holes are completely hidden beneath the quarters, and the arc at the bottom flows naturally across the gap.

I’ve also included a family photo of my current rotation between the Sage Chromepak T55s and these Aspen Acorn 5332s. I throw on the Roanoke Denim TNW 365s in the afternoons to do my dirty work outdoors.

Have a great weekend, y’all!

What’s happening near Mixtli?

Presa is completely blocked off for a couple blocks at Alamo. Tons of police out in front of Mixtli.

Mystery Belt Jackpot

Always bet on black…?

Last Mystery Belt go round, I ordered one Heavy Duty and one Heritage. I then set karma in motion be posting a comment in here “Hoping for anything but black.” I received a lovely black stitched bison heritage belt and an almost black DS Olive wide boi.

This go round, I decided to spin the wheel again on another Heavy Duty, and I intentionally made NO posts about it, hoping I could dodge the black curse. Well it landed today. And you’ll never guess what color it is…

BLACK!

But whoa mama—it’s a belt and a half! Looks like a DS Black Appaloosa Gunslinger! Wow!! What a score!! It’s definitely got some character to it, and there’s no other black belt I’d rather have.

BOTL Jonesing

I can’t be the only one sitting here saying “Doesn’t it normally drop at 7:00 PST? Or is it supposed to be 8:00…?” I’m wishfully thinking it’s because they’re appending more dome boots into the already recorded BOTL footage.

FBF

It’s Friday, and it’s hot. South Texas is finally experiencing. What all y’all Yankees got to enjoy a month ago: temps consistently in the upper 90s and occasionally cracking into triple digits. Since I reserve shorts’n’boots solely for special occasions, I’m rolling with some of the lightest weight jeans in my closet today: N&F Cat’s Pyjamas (which have a pretty funny story if you look into it). Oh, and the boots are some shorty TNW BYOs made out of the still stiff (but tolerable) Cypress Light Grey. I’m getting some tiny hints of brown out of them after a few months, but they’re still grey as heck.

So much winning!

My resize is scheduled for production!! This is the boot that left me really scratching me head over my shoulder own very special sizing needs and which kicked off my lengthy conversations with Dakota and 3Ring that ultimately led to my recent success with the Aspen Acorn Father’s Day bangers. These boots are going to be extra special once they finally land.

FBF at last

I think it’s been three weeks since I’ve actually had boots on a floorboard.

Hope everyone has a great weekend. Enjoy the Sage Chromepak!

Let's Talk About Pull-On Fit (again)

TL;DR -- Has anyone with very low volume feet been able to achieve a good fit with pull-ons?

I know this is something of a dead horse around here, but I'm specifically wondering about getting the right fit in pull-ons for us oddballs with low-volume feet.

I've finally found joy in fit with size 11.5B with size 10 uppers. My "mid foot" (dorsal area? metatarsal plateau? lower instep? vamp-behind-the-ball-area?) is almost dead flat, and that continues to my skinny ankles. Adding insoles only goes so far, and even "max cushion" socks tend to go heaviest on padding around the toes and heel, which isn't where I need it. Sizing down on the uppers (as originally suggested by u/3RingCircu5) has finally provided a solution that helps mitigate the excess volume that I've experienced in most footwear over the years, and I couldn't be happier with how my latest pair fits.

Now that I've gotten fit dialed in on lace-ups, I want to push the envelope and order some pull-ons. I'm thinking specifically about some Western Chelseas or lugged Work Chelseas (55), in no small part because I can't imagine Wellingtons are going to be anything but sloppy on my feet. Since pull-ons don't really have an upper in the traditional sense, I'm fairly certain that there's no way to "size down" on the uppers, so I'm worrying about having too much volume in there.

Questions:

  • Do Chelseas seem like the superior option for pull-ons?
  • Should I just stop worrying and order a pair in my usual size and hope for the best?
  • Are there any tweaks to sizing (or tweaks to the build) that might help me out?
  • Should I not roll the dice, and instead adjust my expectations and go for a tanker instead, since those DO have uppers (even though I'm really looking for the grab & go simplicity of "true" pull-ons)?

PS: I have a pair of Doc Wellingtons that I ordered a couple months back that are likely still many months away. I'm probably just gonna let those ride for now, but I will use any notes here to inform changes that I might consider whenever my change window opens up on those.

Another Day, Another Pile of Small Goods

Ordered the shade cases during Father’s Day. Forgive me, but: two for me (SB Oxblood + 64 Brown Doubleshot) and one for my Dad (SB Oxblood). My Dad’s always been a “red” guy, and—while I’m really not (Fry Sauce wallet, notwithstanding)—I wanted to get us matching shade cases. Much to my surprise and delight: the matching cases don’t match, but it’s perfect: the loud red for him, and the muted one for me! The 64 Brown DS I picked up to have something I could through in my bag. I’ve really wanted to try out this leather but wanted to see how it patinas first, so I figured this would be one way to do it.

The belt was ordered back in May, shortly after receiving my Chromepak Sage boots. In belt form, it isn’t radically different from my Natty Predator belt, but I have a feeling the patina is going to be quite a bit different. Probably going to hold onto this one for the Dome.

Great work on all of this, u/Grain-and-Twill and crew!

Mysterious NBeltD + Saucy Wallet

Boxing Day continues!

Two mysteries: one that is pretty well solved, and one that I might need help in solving.

For the heritage belt, I’m fairly confident that I’m looking at Black Bison. For the Heavy Duty, I was guessing it’s DS Slate, [edit: but DS Olive seems to be the winner!], and holy cow is this thing THICC! It’s also waxy as hell with impressive pull up (that is really hard to capture in still photos).

One funny aside: when I ordered these belts, I made a comment wishing for “anything but black” and knowing that I was sealing my fate in the process. Well-played, Nicks. 😉

And of course, I couldn’t resist begging for this wallet in the brief moment that it was shown on screen during the sample sale live feed. I do a lot of work with a certain very large restaurant chain, and—while I was too skittish to grab a pair of the boots in Fry Sauce—I was hoping for an opportunity to get something in that leather. Thanks to u/Grain-and-Twill for making it happen. (Please enjoy the picture of me and my son at HQ this week—his first time there!)
