How do you treat acquaintances you see on the app?

M36

In my standouts today I saw a women that I know from advocacy work in my city. We've met a few times but have never really spoken one on one, just at events/happy hours/slack. I would definitely be interested in dating her, but given we are in very similar circles, I am worried about making her uncomfortable by asking in person.

Do I just wait and see if she likes my profile, leave a like and see where it goes (I'm out of roses for the week so would need to wait for her to pop up in the normal area), or reach out in real life and see if she wants to grab coffee?

Honestly, I'm always nervous about asking folks in real life as I never want to make someone uncomfortable, especially if I will see them around again. Maybe I am overthinking this. I am back on the apps after a divorce and just unsure how anyone does this.

Shoes for a date when it is 100 degrees

What do y'all wear on hot days when you are trying to impress? I wear Chacos most days in the summer but am dating again and not sure those are great for a first date.

Boat shoes with no see socks?

Sneakers?

I don't even have a 3rd idea

Living in Ramstein as an unmarried civ

I am looking at a civilian job on Ramstein base as I am pretty burned out and liking the idea of living in Europe for a bit. I am a bit concerned about Ramstein as it seems pretty isolated. I am 36 and recently divorced (hence wanting to make a big change) and am concerned that I will feel isolated there.

Can anyone speak to their Ramstein experience and what the culture is like, particularly as a civ. Did it feel too small? What is it like to date there?

I decline every Red Card order

I don't get it. They take so long, I have to hunt through aisles for some random thing they might be out of, then mess with the app to pay. Why would I do that for the same amount as just a food pickup and drop? Are you seeing red card orders that are actually worth the time?

Should I rent out my home and get an apartment?

I own a home with a very low (2.65%) interest rate. This puts the mortgage around $2150 (with some ups and downs in taxes and insurance). An NFL stadium is going up nearby too, so it doesn't make much sense to sell it now in this cooler market.

I am getting divorced and while I could continue to cover this on $130k a year, it definitely makes money tight and I can't max my retirement as I was.

Looking at some quick comps on Zillow I could likely rent my 2bd 2 bath house for ~$2800-3000. I could rent the second bedroom out but it is pretty tight, barely fits a queen bed.

I could rent a 1bd close to my office for $1475 a month (I don't own a car so staying near downtown is key). A studio for $1300.

Does it make sense to just rent out my house for a bit?

Advice for a mid career Environmental Scientist

I am an environmental scientist with the US government. Given the last year at work and some personal life changes, I am exploring leaving the US.

I have a masters in geology and an MBA and have been working in stream and wetland ecology and permitting for 14 years between private and fed. I also work on climate issues (or did), wildfire resiliency, functional assessments, green infrastructure, and even emergency response.

I really love urbanism and living in a city with great transit where I don't need a car. Given this, I have been looking at Europe but it generally seems hard to make that move.

Australia seems a bit easier maybe but I know less about it and have never been.

I speak a little French mais pas très bien.

Any folks in environmental fields able to make the leap? Where did you go and how did you make it happen?

Earl of Sandwich was so 1762 and late

In the first century BCE, Rabbi Hillel the Elder taught that during the Passover Seder, Jews should place the maror (bitter herbs) and the charoset (a chopped fruit and nut paste) between two pieces of matzo (unleavened bread) to form the Korech (to wrap or to bind), symbolizing the bitter slavery and sweet redemption. This predates the Earl's little card game by 1800 years.

So next time you eat a nice kosher ham and cheese on some bread, call it a Hillel.

Considering a detached garage

I'm looking into building a detached garage for my house. Does anyone have any companies they recommend or don't recommend (even more important really)? Has anyone tried to get one of the prefab garages? Did it actually end up cheaper than stick build after concrete, electrical, permitting, etc?

I'm currently with EPA and am burned the hell out. Combined with a divorce and I'd kind of like to get out of the US.

Anyone work a civilian OCONUS job? How did you get it? Are there environmentalish jobs with State, DOD, or some other dept or agency?
