Midnight Spider-Man is an otaku

We've seen some dramatic new takes on Spider-Man thanks to Marvel's Spider-Verse, but in the new series, Midnight Spider-Man, I think we could be getting a first: Peter Parker as an otaku.

“Peter Parker is a fan of Japanese culture in this story," series writer Phillip Kennedy Johnson says during the Marvel Midnight Universe panel at Comic-Con International: San Diego 2026.

According to Johnson, this Midnight version of Spider-Man will be a fervent manga reader (and they're creating a new manga in the story for him to read), but the character will also have in his bedroom what's described as a Japanese imperial mask from a World War 2 pilot.

...

Johnson says that while Midnight Spider-Man isn't a manga, "the influence is there. I'm reading a ton of Junji Ito."

Later, he also mentioned Hideo Yamamoto's Homunculus as an influence.

Midnight Universe Could Be Marvel's Next Blockbuster Franchise

Marvel recently announced the Midnight Universe, a new publishing initiative that it hopes will drive further interest in the publisher. As it stands right now, not a lot is known about what the Midnight Universe will entail. However, the details that fans have received have caused a lot of hype. Firstly, this series will indeed chart an alternative reality, away from Earth-616. This plane of existence is far darker than the one readers might be used to. This is a horror-fueled spectacle and one that will twist famous characters in new directions. The closest comparison would be to those haunting 'What if...?' stories that flirted with horror in their own right.

This will be a universe-wide imprint, which means Marvel is not using one specific character to launch the wider concept. Rather, a roster of heroes and villains has been chosen to transform this era. As can be expected, Spider-Man is among that lineup, a character who is often at the forefront of any new publishing initiative. Equally, the X-Men are also on board with their own Midnight rendition. Then, there's The Fantastic Four, a beloved team that is not always at the center of attention when it comes to these game-changing decisions. That latter choice is certainly one to watch.

...

The obvious question among all of this is, why now? Why would Marvel commit to such an ambitious new world?

The answer is rather simple. DC Comics has had incredible success with the launch of the Absolute Universe. While Batman served as the figurehead there, it wasn't long until a full roster of recognizable characters was reshaped after a major trait was taken away from each of them. It seems Marvel is hoping to produce similar results here. These are characters who are deeply flawed, who have seemingly had their heroism taken away from them. They are transformed, with The Fantastic Four facing Lovecraftian threats, while Storm deals with her own vampirism and Spider-Man becomes a hybrid creature of nightmares.

Marvel Reveals Spider-Man’s Horror Redesign Ahead of Brand New Day’s Organic Powers Debut

Marvel Comics revealed a twisted Spider-Man redesign, and it's great timing ahead of the web-slinger's return to the big screen. Spider-Man's costume has evolved significantly through the years, but the core red-and-blue aesthetic with black webbing still reigns supreme as the enduring symbol of the Marvel hero. While the suit itself has seen countless tweaks and high-tech upgrades, modern stories have increasingly explored Peter's powers becoming more biological, shifting the focus from gadgets he builds to innate mutations.

Marvel Comics takes this concept to its most extreme and terrifying in the new Midnight Universe. In Midnight Spider-Man # 1, written by Philip Kennedy Johnson with art by ScieTronc, a young Peter Parker is horrifically mutated by Oscorp's experiments, turning him into a hideous spider hybrid with organic webbing.

Peter Parker embraces a full-body horror design with exposed veins and web patterns fused into his flesh.

This Midnight Variant of Spider-Man amplified the core nightmare themes of this main comic line, showing Peter embracing his monstrous new form to prevent Oscorp from creating more hybrids.

This Midnight launch is fascinatingly timed with recent Spider-Man: Brand New Day developments in the MCU, where Tom Holland's Peter Parker gains organic webbing as part of an evolution triggered by his physical mutation over the toll of becoming a full-time Spider-Man.

...

"Let's be honest: any other circumstances, Marvel wouldn't let me write the Fantastic Four. Because I'm too mean and evil for the first family. But this is the dark continuity of the Midnight Universe—a fresh origin story for the characters that channels cosmic, Lovecraftian terror—which makes it a perfect match for me. Mad science and cults and hidden realities await. The pacing is patient and full of dread and mystery and rich with a mythology that will feel both familiar and uncanny." – Benjamin Percy

SCOOP: Cyclops, A Vampire Hunter With A Beard in Midnight: X-Men

Bleeding Cool has scooped the solicitation for Midnight: X-Men #2, out in November 2026 from Marvel Comics, by Jonathan Hickman and Matteo Della Fonte. And while we only have the Midnight now-traditional sliver of a cover until publication, it does reveal Cyclops with a beard and a crew cut, as well as slivers of Angel, Beast and presumably Jean Grey. And the solicit also reveals that he is a vampire hunter. And given that issue 1 seems to show both Storm and Nightcrawler as vampires, this may not end well. Also, they seem to be calling vampires, empyres in the Midnight world…

Marvel Comics' boss is stepping in to personally oversee the Midnight X-Men, Spider-Man, & Fantastic Four launches as its editor

Marvel Comics' boss, Dan Buckley, may be leaving in the next few months, but before he goes, he has taken on a new job: comics editor. Buckley is currently Marvel's 'Head of Marvel Comics & Franchise' (formerly its publisher/president), but for the upcoming new alt-universe line Marvel Midnight, he is stepping out and also taking on the role/title of 'Executive Editor.'

The new title was revealed in a Friday press release from Marvel Comics, but overlooked by other outlets. Popverse has learned that this new, additional title is only for the Marvel Midnight line, and is part of a plan to have increased focus from the top of the company on down into what the company sees as a pivotal launch.
