If you live alone with a dog, consider making a detailed emergency care plan

I wanted to share something I’ve put together for my dog in case it’s helpful to anyone else who lives alone, especially people whose immediate support may be limited and/or who have health issues.

I have a few health problems that sometimes result in unexpected trips to the hospital. This happened to me again recently. I went to urgent care and ended up being transported to the ER. I was already stressed about what was happening with my health, but I was more worried about my dog: how long I might be away from home, whether someone would be able to get to him, and what they might be walking into if I couldn’t get home for an extended period of time.

I already had a small emergency plan for him. My neighbor had agreed to take care of him if something happened to me. I had written instructions that included things like where he could be taken if they weren’t able to keep him. But the instructions were fairly minimal. In addition, his care has also become a little more complicated recently because he was diagnosed with Cushing’s disease and now takes daily medication.

After I got home, I decided I wanted to make the existing plan much more detailed and organize everything so that, if necessary, somebody could walk into my house and immediately know where his things are and what to do. I tried to think through the different situations someone might encounter if I’d been unexpectedly away from home for a while and couldn’t explain everything myself. Here are my tips:

Make sure trusted people can access your home. There are different ways to handle this depending on what you’re comfortable with. You can give spare keys to people you trust, or securely store a spare key on your property in a way that only designated people know how to access. The important part is having some way for someone you trust to get inside if you’re unexpectedly unable to come home.

Have more than one emergency contact if possible. My neighbor is my first contact because they’re physically closest to me, but I also asked two friends if they’d be willing to be backup emergency contacts. That way, if my neighbor is traveling or has another commitment that prevents them from caring for my dog, there are other people who already know what’s going on and have agreed to help.

Write down more information than you think someone will need. I made a four-page PDF with simple, clearly labeled sections covering food and medication, walking/potty, what to do if he’s had an accident, what to do if he needs to be cleaned, where his spare crate and beds are, and where he can go if the person who gets him isn’t able to keep him. I also included photos showing where his supplies are located. My emergency contacts have copies of the PDF, and I keep a printed copy with my emergency information.

Keep the supplies together. I have two small emergency-care baskets. One contains the things someone would need for his everyday care, medication and cleaning up an accident. I keep it with his collapsible spare crate and extra beds. The second is under my bathroom sink and contains the things someone would need to clean him if necessary (dog shampoo, dog-washing gloves, a towel, hair dryer and dog wipes).

The idea is that nobody should have to search through cabinets or guess which food, medication, leash, bowl, etc. belongs to him. The things they need are already together.

Include a backup for where your dog can stay. My instructions include the boarding facility my dog has been going to for years, along with their contact information and hours. If my emergency contacts aren’t able to keep him themselves, they know where he can safely go and that it’s somewhere he’s already familiar with.

Make it clear what you don’t expect someone to do. This was important to me too. If I’ve been gone for an extended period and my dog has had an accident, my instructions specifically tell whoever gets him not to worry about cleaning my house or his crate for me. I provide gloves, paper towels, cleaning wipes and garbage bags. If a bed is badly soiled, put it in a garbage bag and leave it. I only want them to do whatever is necessary to make sure he’s clean, comfortable and safe. I can deal with the rest later.

A note about the crate, since I know people have different preferences around crate training: I crate-trained my dog when I first got him at the recommendation of my vet. I’ve found it to be the safest and most predictable arrangement for us when I’m unable to supervise him. It has never been used as punishment. He willingly goes into it throughout the day and treats it as his little den. Being comfortable in a crate has also made boarding and transportation much easier. He’s prone to dietary indiscretion and will absolutely get himself into trouble if given the opportunity.

Whether your dog is crate-trained isn’t really relevant to the larger point though. A dog loose in the house still needs someone who can get inside, find their food and medication, take them outside, and know what to do if their owner can’t come home.

I’m sharing this because the experience made me realize that my existing plan could be much more specific. Having people who are willing to help is incredibly important, but I also wanted to make helping as straightforward as possible for them. Now I’ve made it so that if I’m sick or injured, I’m not trying to remember and communicate a bunch of dog-care instructions from an ER.

Everyone’s setup will look different depending on their pet, home and support system. But if you live alone with an animal, I think it’s worth thinking through the question: If I unexpectedly couldn’t come home tonight, would the person taking care of my pet know how to get in, where everything is, what they need to do, and where my pet could safely go if necessary?

I’ve included a few of photos of my setup and part of the instructions in case they’re useful as an example. I’ve removed identifying information for privacy.

Greatest Bootleg Shirt of All Time

I posted in the main MCR subreddit a little while ago about the fact that I didn’t actually start listening to My Chem until April of this year. I was in high school from 2004–2008 and absolutely could not stand them at the time lol. I’m 36 now, finally gave them another chance and realized I was sleeping on great music for 20+ years. The thread was really lovely and the fan base (especially us elders) is great: https://www.reddit.com/r/MyChemicalRomance/s/X98gsbftck

I’ve been revamping my wardrobe lately (no pun intended) and have settled into what I jokingly call earth tone emo. I like alternative clothes, but just don’t want to wear black and red all the time because I tend to look better in warmer colors.

In the last week, I’ve started looking for older/more uncommon MCR shirts since I’ll be seeing them twice this year. I was specifically trying to find the James Dean/Houdini shirt from the Bullets era that Bert McCracken wore at one point. I couldn’t find it, but while I was looking I came across this thing.

I had a strong suspicion it wasn’t official merch, but thought it may have just been a bootleg of a shirt that circulated during My Chem’s early days. I liked the shade of maroon and love Bullets, so I figured I’d buy it just to add to my growing collection of band/graphic tees.

Then it showed up and I actually read the track list. I have no idea how this shirt was generated. I could definitely see ChatGPT mangling some things here and there, but this is next level bad. I’d be curious to know what prompt they used. Maybe they tried to regenerate the image several times and it started mangling the text with each attempt.

There are so many good ones that I can’t decide which is my favorite. HROWNING LESSORS is incredible. OUR LADY OF AGRROMO is also really strong.

This is now one of my favorite shirts. I plan on wearing it to the San Diego show just to see if anyone notices it 🤣

Does anybody else have completely unhinged bootleg MCR merch like this? Also, which of these is your favorite fake Bullets song?

P.S. I have an extra ticket to the SD show if anyone would like to join me!

Sometimes I Just Go For It cover

Hey everyone! I’m relatively new here and haven’t posted much yet, but I wanted to share a piano cover I’ve been working on of Sometimes I Just Go for It.

I learned this one entirely by ear, so there may be a couple of small differences from the original, but I did my best to stay faithful to it.

I knew Bert played piano, but was unaware of how beautiful and understated that side of his songwriting could be. He has an incredible ear for melody. When I first heard this song, I wanted to learn it immediately.

Getting into The Used later on, while also revisiting some of the bands I loved when I was younger, has genuinely inspired me to start playing more piano and guitar again. I’ll probably make another post sometime about how I found the band, but for now, I figured this would be a good place to start.
Hope you enjoy it. Excited to see them in October!

Reggie and the Full Effect - Congratulations Smack + Katy

I saw a clip a little while ago of James Dewees and Matt Pryor doing an acoustic show together where they played this song. There were about 15 seconds at the beginning where I could hear the piano clearly and I thought it sounded really pretty. I started wondering whether I could work out the rest of it, so I gave it a shot.

This is my first attempt at arranging a song, so there are still some rough edges, but I had a ton of fun figuring it out and turning it into a fuller acoustic piano version.

I’ve also been working on more complete covers of a couple other Reggie songs. I recently learned which vintage analog synthesizers to go off of and I’ve started recording electric guitar alongside it. I’m programming drums for now, at least until I eventually get an e-kit and start taking drums more seriously.

I’m always open to more emo/pop-punk suggestions, especially songs that might be interesting to rearrange for acoustic piano. Let me know what you’d like to hear next!

“What do you mean, Mom!? Of COURSE I took my medication!” 😡😤

George was recently diagnosed with Cushing’s. The vet prescribed Trilostane, which I’ve been giving him twice a day. This kind of behavior isn’t unique to this medication. Since I rescued him 6 years ago, with any pill that isn’t flavored, he’ll pretend to swallow it, spit it out and hide it in his beard. I wish I were kidding! In all seriousness, he does take his medication and I should probably move back to putting it in a piece of string cheese, but these little guys and gals are so stubborn! Dogs really do have the emotional intelligence of toddlers. I would also argue that they have some level of free will. Maybe Yorkies have even more than other breeds. If they don’t want to do something, they just won’t do it! 😤🙅🏼‍♂️🐶

Gratitude post for the people working at Taco Bell right now

I wanted to share this because I know the recent lettuce outbreak has created a really stressful situation for a lot of Taco Bell employees, even though the contamination issue came from Taylor Farms. I hope it’s okay and isn’t too off-topic. I saw the manager post yesterday talking about employees losing hours and how hard they were trying to keep everyone working and it made me want to say something positive.

My life has been objectively difficult over the past couple of years and Taco Bell has genuinely helped me through some rough days.

At one point, I was dealing with such severe vertigo from a medication issue that I couldn’t look down without getting violently ill. For several days, the only food I could reliably manage was something handheld that I could eat while looking straight ahead until the medication kicked in. I ate Taco Bell for three days. It sounds ridiculous, but it got food into me when eating anything was impossible.

Last night, I found out that my dog has an enlarged heart and liver and may have serious heart disease. He’s my best friend and has been with me through the hardest chapters of my life.I’m heartbroken and exhausted today. I’m in absolutely no mood to cook. I got a couple of my usual beef Cheesy Gordita Crunch that I’m currently eating as I type this.

The people at my local drive-thru are consistently kind. It might seem funny to talk about a fast food restaurant this way, but my local T Bell has become a small, dependable comfort in my life when everything else feels unmanageable.

Thank you to the people making the food, working the drive-thru, handling scared customers, rearranging schedules and trying to keep everything running through something that wasn’t your fault. I hope things stabilize soon. I’ll keep supporting my local Taco Bell 💜🩵🌮

Does modern production make newer pop punk/emo feel less “of the era” even when the songwriting fits?

I’m newer to this subreddit and am absolutely loving it here so far! For some context, I’m 36 and currently having a full-on pop punk/emo/post-hardcore renaissance.

Like a true millennial, I grew up on all of it, fell off for a while and am now revisiting a ton of older bands while also checking out newer ones people keep recommending. I’ve been listening to Hot Mulligan and really like their sound.

I’ve been trying to keep an open mind about newer music in these genres, because there definitely seem to be some curmudgeonly old head takes out there and I really don’t want to be that person. I also just genuinely like hearing new music.

But I think I’m starting to understand at least one small reason why some older listeners feel that disconnect. A lot of these newer songs absolutely could have existed back when I was growing up from a songwriting/melodic standpoint, but they still sound very obviously modern to me and I think part of that is the production.

Everything is so clean now. You can hear every instrument, every layer, every note really clearly. Older records felt fuzzier, messier and a little more chaotic. The newer stuff I’ve been listening to sounds great, but the cleaner production kind of breaks the illusion for me and immediately tells my brain “this is new”, which I fully embrace. It should sound different. It’s a different time!

I noticed the same thing with the MCR’s Three Cheers remix/remaster. I actually liked being able to hear some parts more clearly, but it also made me realize how much the older mix itself was part of the feeling, beyond just the nostalgia.

I’ve dabbled in very amateur production and play a few instruments, so I could just be paying more attention. Anybody else hear this? Especially people who record, mix, play? Is it mostly just better technology and modern standards? Do some producers deliberately try to keep a little grit/bleed/chaos in there?

Also, if anybody in San Diego is looking for people to jam with, lmk!

Got to see this legend last night

Last night, I got to see THE Tim Kasher of Cursive and The Good Life (among others) at a small local venue, Soda Bar in San Diego, CA.

I apologize for the poor quality. There were two women in the crowd who were being incredibly trashy, screaming over him while he was singing and just being general nuisances. Seeing people attempt to twerk to Driftwood is a sentence I’d never thought I’d write, let alone witness. Time and place, ladies!

Hot tomato summer

My neighbors have a huge tomato garden and I look forward to fresh ‘maters every summer! We swap baked goods for veggies. Couldn’t ask for a better arrangement! 🍅 Sliced tomato, coarse kosher salt, black pepper, avocado oil mayonnaise, a touch of garlic powder on sourdough, lightly fried in a bit of margarine (ya girl’s got high cholesterol, so trying to make healthier swaps where I can).

Looking for folks to jam with

I’ve been getting back into playing music a lot more lately and I’m trying to figure out where to go from here. I play keys/piano and I’m also getting back into guitar. Mostly into emo/post-hardcore/alternative/pop punk, but honestly open to whatever.

I’m not really looking to jump straight into anything super serious right this second, but I’d love to know if there are any beginner-friendly jam groups, open jams, casual music meetups, rehearsal spaces, or people looking to play with others.

Basically just trying to find a direction and some community around it. If anyone has suggestions, I’d really appreciate it.

The Used - All That I’ve Got (2005)

A lot of their earlier stuff is considered to be post hardcore, but some of it (especially like this one) have more of a pop punk/emo feel since they tended to straddle multiple lanes. The inspiration for the song was the death of Bert’s Chihuahua, David Bowie, though the album is largely about grief overall as he was dealing with the death of his first girlfriend, who was sadly pregnant with his child at the time. Great album, really looking forward to seeing them in October!

Suprep was a breeze with promethazine on board

I had my first colonoscopy today at 36 and I wanted to post because reading other people’s experiences on here helped me a lot.

I was especially nervous about Suprep because I looked around on Reddit and saw a lot of horror stories. I have gastroparesis and a very sensitive stomach, so one thing I asked my doctor about ahead of time was whether I could take an antiemetic with it. For me, that was promethazine, because I can’t safely take Zofran with my other meds. I took 25 mg an hour before both rounds of prep and I truly believe it prevented nausea and vomiting. I saw a decent amount of folks who took Zofran beforehand and had similar outcomes.

So my number one tip is: if you’re prescribed Suprep and you tend to get nauseous easily, ask your doctor ahead of time whether you can take something for nausea with it.

My second big tip is to hydrate really well throughout the day before you start prep, and keep hydrating as much as your instructions allow. I drank clear liquids (LMNT powder, Sprite, chicken broth, lemon Italian ice, ginger beer). When I was reading up on Suprep specifically, I saw that electrolyte imbalance and knock on effects could be serious. I have a lot of other health problems and live alone, so I didn’t want to risk something happening.

For mixing it with something other than plain water, I tried two different things.

Round 1: Based on another Redditor’s post, I blended it with lemon Italian ice and ginger beer into a slushy and drank it with a straw. It actually wasn’t half-bad and tasted like a weird salty cocktail.

Round 2: I overslept a little and had to just get it down quickly with ginger beer on its own. Ginger beer masks the taste pretty well overall. Still used a straw which helped too.

For me, the hardest part was not the taste so much as the timing. My clinic was strict about when I had to stop all liquids before the procedure, so I had to do my second round super early in the morning. That part sucked more than the actual prep itself.

A few practical tips that also helped: Baby wipes are a necessity. Diaper rash paste/barrier cream helped a lot. A peri bottle was less useful for me because I was going so often. Vicks under the nose helped with the weird chemical/medicinal smell when going to the bathroom. Be prepared for what comes out to smell bizarre and kind of medicinal.

For me, it took about 4 hours from starting each round until things mostly settled down. I probably went to the bathroom around 30 times total between both rounds. It didn’t really hurt or cramp for me, it was just a constant “I need to go again” situation.

My colonoscopy itself was normal. I didn’t have any polyps or more serious findings. And honestly, the actual procedure was the easiest part. Propofol was amazing. You get a nice nap and then it’s over.

So overall, the prep was unpleasant, but not unbearable. I was really nervous going into it, but it’s doable! And much better than GoLYTELY from what I’ve heard.

Having people over for the first time in 1.5 years

And I’m honestly really nervous. I have nowhere else to share this, so I hope it’s okay if I share it here. I’m going on a rock climbing trip next week and invited some newer friends over to practice outdoor climbing in my garage.

The last time I had anyone over was for a Friendsgiving with my ex-husband. It was a total nightmare. He was deeply abusive and the events that unfolded pretty immediately after were terrifying and deeply traumatic. I was also abandoned by every major support system following those events because my life became too hard for other people to look at. In the span of a year, everyone showed their true colors. I learned that I had betrayed myself again and again by putting everyone first and myself last too many times to count.

I’m disabled by Multiple Sclerosis (MS) and have a few other chronic health conditions going on, so I’m sometimes housebound, usually by 2-3 day stretches if it gets really bad. My mental health was extremely poor over the summer and at one point, I had zero friends. I worked really, really hard to build up my social world again which is extremely difficult at 36. I have a better support system in place and am proud to say I even made a friend who can take me to medical appointments.

I’m not sure if I’m articulating myself very well, but I’ve had some pretty awful things go down in this house. Being screamed at and abused in other ways by my ex, a major health event, SI (I’m okay now, but realized I needed to finally cut my mother out of my life) and more.

Because of my disability, my house is usually extremely dirty. It’s not quite as bad as a hoarder’s, but if someone were to look around on particularly bad weeks, I think they’d be uncomfortable. I recently realized that while I’m proud of myself for practicing good personal hygiene and social interactions, I have to pay the price somewhere else. The cleanliness of my home suffers. I have horrible fatigue along with myriad other symptoms.

At present, my house is decently clean and organized. I shoved a bunch of things into the guest bedroom and closed the door. I’m about to wipe down the kitchen counters and cabinets with Dawn power wash. My garage, which is where we’ll be practicing, is immaculate. I called a junk removal company, who took a lot of stuff away to make that possible.

I guess I’m just feeling really nervous because this home has been both my refuge and my prison at different points. The circumstances in which I came into homeownership are also very difficult and involve familial financial exploitation. I haven’t shared all of this with my new friends yet. My life has been heavy in ways that are nearly impossible to comprehend and I don’t want to scare them off by forcing them into doing emotional labor. And at this point, I’ve honestly worked through a good deal of it and have found ways to succinctly summarize everything without too much emotion.

I guess the TL;DR is that I’ve been alone for so long that it feels incredibly intimate and nerve wracking, almost violating in some way even though I know social interaction like this is normal. I like my new friends. They’re good people and through them, I’ve reentered the world in a million different ways. Does anyone have any advice for mentally preparing?
