Antenna placement - apt balcony

Antenna placement - apt balcony

Anybody have any issues with a rental apartment being super strict on antenna placement on a balcony that's for your exclusive use. I got a violation note today because it "protruded beyond the vertical and horizontal space that is lead to you for exclusive use". This was a small bowtie antenna where the rear reflector went several inches beyond the rail but it doesn't appear that it went beyond the actual exterior wall boundary.

This is the FCC OTARD rule.

https://www.fcc.gov/media/over-air-reception-devices-rule

"Q:  Does the rule apply to condominiums or apartment buildings if the antenna is installed so that it hangs over or protrudes beyond the balcony railing or patio wall?

A:  No.  The rule does not prohibit restrictions on antennas installed beyond the balcony or patio of a condominium or apartment unit if such installation is in, on, or over a common area.  An antenna that extends out beyond the balcony or patio is usually considered to be in a common area that is not within the scope of the rule.  Therefore, the rule does not apply to a condominium or rental apartment unit unless the antenna is installed wholly within the exclusive use area, such as the balcony or patio."

So they have the right to restrict based on this. I just haven't had it used against me before. So on a patio, would this be at the rail or the edge of the exterior wall?

Linux file system compatibility

I was going to try out GhostBSD again and need a shared disk space between my Linux installs and GhostBSD. I was originally thinking OpenZFS but that would mean installing it on Linux and potentially breaking stuff on kernel updates. So how about EXT4? Is the native kernel driver good enough without journaling? There's also exFAT which has no journaling on either side nor permissions. Maybe ntfs-3g -- it seems to have journaling available on both sides. Or the variant with ntfs3 on Linux side and ntfs-3g on the GhostBSD side?

Or maybe just say screw it and add a small Alpine Linux image in a Bhyve VM, mount an existing BTRFS volume and export it via NFS and handle any file sharing this way?

OpenZFS on Linux

I'm looking at installing GhostBSD along side Linux. Linux is using BTRFS for its root partition and I have a subvolume for data that I'd like GhostBSD to have access to. BTRFS isn't going to work for BSD so I'm thinking of moving just the data volume to ZFS. How sensitive is Linux these days to updates with kernel changes and compatibility with OpenZFS? Should I just create an EXT4 volume for the share between them rather than ZFS?

WebVTT subtitles

Does any other client besides SwiftFin play WebVTT subtitles on LiveTV? It's the only one that I've found so far but it doesn't provide a proper Guide format for LiveTV.

How about AndroidTV clients? From what I've seen -- these devices don't have WebVTT due to most of them using Exoplayer.

Crypto sure is a pain

I was going to do a subscription renewal last night and realized what a pain in the ass that buying crypto is in the USA. I have a coinbase account that I can use but didn't have enough funds remaining. I have funds in two different credit unions with debit cards -- debit cards transactions are denied at the bank for crypto. I have a Venmo account but it's funded through debit cards so it runs into the same issue with buying crypto. The only way that I was able to do this in the past was to ACH money into a brokerage account and use a cash management account from there which I have a debit card for which is not blocked from buying crypto. And of course ACH transfers normally take a few days.

Android Developer Verification enforcement system

Is this something that's also going to affect AndroidTV? Should I be looking at putting the Projectivy launcher on my Nvidia Shield (2015)?

How long is too long for delivery for 2300 miles?

I'm getting extremely frustrated. I did a full-service move through a moving broker (never again). It's been 32 calendar days (24 business days) and the moving company tells me the carrier hasn't moved my stuff out of the state of origin yet. They say if there isn't a delivery by next Friday (40 calendar days/30 business days) that they'll talk compensation for daily delays. This is what the Bill of Lading states so no real surprise I guess.

Am I crazy for thinking that we are already beyond a normal moving duration? I did the reverse move 4 years ago and it was complete in a week so this seems disturbing. How common is this?

Xfinity app and an XB7

I was trying to configure port forwarding on an XB7 gateway via the local web interface and it says that I have to use the Xfinity app for that because an app makes everything easier, right? Anyway, when I go to the Xfinity app and login, it can't see any devices to manage. If I go to setup a gateway, it says that "Internet equipment has already been activated on your account" which is true. It just won't show the Internet equipment" in the app so that I can manage it. I tried both the Android and Apple versions of the app with the same result.

Is there an easy "fix" for this?

Antenna mounting

I've got a 2 inch x 1.5 inch rectangular horizontal railing and another one of the same dimension 4 inches below it on a 3rd floor balcony. There's also 2 vertical rectangular connections of the same dimension connecting the railings I'd like to put a small TV antenna there but am questioning what the best way of doing a non-penetrating mount on this rail might be.

My current thoughts are a J-mount mast bolted to two pieces of 2x4 or 2x6 which were in turn bolted together creating a compression fitting with the rail. My gut is telling me there's a better way though. Maybe something like this one which would then fit on the vertical connections between the railings and just remove the back bracket.

Or maybe some type of square U-bolt but it would have to match up with the hole pattern on the J-mount.

Frontier 1Gbs vs Xfinity 1Gbs symmetric Internet

I just moved into an apartment complex and have a choice of two fiber providers: Xfinity and Frontier. Both are offering 1Gbs symmetric internet. Frontier has it for $49.99 for 12 mo's. Xfinity has a lock in rate of $50/mo for 5 years and then of course there's $1.32 for sales tax for a total of $51.32/mo.

This is the first time I'm seeing symmetric fiber for Comcast. Fiber comes into the panel, goes to what I'm assuming is an ONT, and then to the Comcast gateway (XB7). Connection seems fine.

https://www.speedtest.net/result/19310026520

I've used Frontier's 1Gbs FIOS service before and it was also fine.

I'd normally jump to Frontier because Comcast was always asymmetric with low upload speeds. There was also the issue of caps which I think Comcast has dropped with the gateway and 1Gbs service. I'm inclined to stay with Xfinity since it's already activated and then switch if I encounter some problem.

  • HDHR5-4US - HDHomerun Connect Quatro - broken/loose power connector
  • HDHR4-2US - HDHomerun Connect - seems to only work on one frequency now.
  • HDHR-US - original HDHomerun Connect - still running and in production.
  • HDHomerun Prime x2 - they work but the cable company abandoned them so worthless.

I just purchased a refurbished HDFX-4K direct from SiliconDust for $169. I don't have a lot of faith that the ATSC 3 tuners will be of a lot of use with the DRM state. Lucky the area that I'm moving to doesn't seem to have any ATSC 3.0 deployments yet.

I should have the HDFX-4K on Tuesday and think I'll chuck the rest of the HDHomerun's as part of the move purge. I doubt that there's very many functional HDHR-US units still running though.
