“what would you ever do without your phone” SHUT THE FUCK UP

yesterday i was having breakfast at a diner, reading the news on my phone, minding my business with my airpods in because i get really easily overstimulated by sound… i saw from the corner of my eye that another waitress (not the waitress in charge of helping me) was standing next to me. i thought she was talking to the old lady at the table next to me, because she kept sitting down and talking to her. my waitress always gets in front of me when she asks me something so i figured she wasnt talking to me. then she walked off.

then the old lady at the table leaned in towards me all angry, and told me how the waiter was trying to ask me “what i’d ever do without my phone”, and how rude it was i ignored her. i said, sorry lady, she wasnt even in front of me and i had my airpods in, i am trying to read the news and eat my breakfast. then the old lady said i should “pick up a book” like she did when she was my age (23).

first off mind your own fucking business. yeah hur durr im on my fucking phone; who gives a shit. if i had a newspaper in front of me, yall wouldnt have said anything. im paying for this meal, i think i can do what i want without an attitude. second, yeah i didnt fucking notice the other old waitress lady trying to talk to me, she wasnt in front of my face, and i was READING THE NEWS with AIRPODS IN. if you arent my waitress im not going to be on the lookout for any two cents people want to interject.

i dont get it… i am dining ALONE… did you want me to inspect every single bite of my fucking meal or something instead? or talk to myself like a goof? whats the big deal???

welcome to 2026… just because all forms of entertainment come on a single device doesn’t mean its some taboo bullshit. when yall were my age you entertained yourself with a newspaper, TV or a book, a phone just happens to do all that. shut the fuck up and let me eat.

EDIT: apparently people are confused when i said i get overstimulated:

  1. its not a huge deal, but i would rather just have noise cancelling on so i can focus on reading the news in this instance, or listening to a podcast.
  2. if i see my waiter coming forward i pop an earbud out to talk to them, not that big of a deal
  3. no one's ever seemed to have an issue with it!
  4. i can do what i please regarding earbuds and the like when i'm out and about and i don't owe conversation to anyone but the waiter : )

some of you guys are being really nasty about that. i'm sorry you feel so bad about yourself that you have to leave a comment about it. i'm just being me :P

i know its a bad thing that jay shot his bandmate in the head. and i know that he's the pedophile that rapes anyone he wanted at school instead of letting kids get the best grades and playing secret of mana. but, im gonna say it. i dont care. never come down is so good and they should have never stopped playing it on the radio. call me whatever you want but i will always be a jay fan.

im a cashier at a big off-price store. you can take a guess. tonight an old lady and her daughter come up to me to return a huge chair. she has a picture of a receipt, i cannot accept that as it is company policy to only use physical receipts. i ask a manager and the manager explains it to her. she accepts her fate and the manager walks away.

but then all of a sudden, she snaps at me. she asks me how long i've worked here, asking if it's my first day. nope, i've been here for 2 years. she calls me a liar, and that she's been shopping here for 6 years and she "knows how things work". then, she tells me how my job is replaceable, how i make $18 an hour and get a 1% pay raise every year and how her net worth is higher than mine will ever be, and how i'm "r-worded" for "thinking i should be paid in gold" for "not letting her return this chair". i tell her, yeah so what i'm minimum wage, i'm just doing my job and i don't make these policies. she calls me the r-slur again, tells me to my face that i'm poor and i'm a "dumb child" (i'm 23). this was very embarrassing as she raised her voice, and everyone around me was looking at me.

then she takes out a photo of her loyalty card, which we can typically use to look up the receipt, if the card was actually physically there with us. i tell her i can't do that and i'm just doing my job, she says she's going to get me fired and that she can "wipe her ass with my bank account".

i call my manager again, she repeats the least offensive stuff of what she's said to her (only the "you guys must be new" thing), and my manager tells her off for being rude because we were both being nothing but nice to her. but then, magically, she pulls up the e-receipt from her email on her phone, which we CAN use for a return, and tells my manager that i said she couldn't use it- which, i never said, as she never showed me that? my manager tells me to just help her out with that and leaves again.

then, all of the sudden, her daughter who's been doing nothing but acting like a fucking barnacle at the bottom of a dingy wants me to ring up $160 worth of merchandise like her bitch mother wasn't being classist and ableist towards me the whole 5 minutes. i help her, because what else can i do? and the whole time, the mother continues to insult my wages. this time i told her sternly "i get it, you made your point." and the daughter shushed her.

what's funny is that after she pays for her stupid bowls and platters, they just leave with the chair, they don't even bother using the e-receipt to return it, after that huge tantrum about net worths and wages, its like they came in the store just to bully me as if they know who i am. they somehow left a credit card statement behind, which i don't know why they even took it out? but i threw it in the grey bin (iron mountain) for it to be shredded. the whole time they were leaving the old lady was still complaining about me.

i am not a violent or mean person, but if i weren't behind that counter on the clock i would have called that lady an old bitch to her face. i've never been spoken to like that by ANYONE in my life, yet alone in my experience working retail. i've dealt with a lot of entitled old people but this really took the cake, and if i come across her and her bumbling daughter again, i don't give a fuck about being professional. this job got me through half of college. you can't just say shit like that to people, i know i wouldn't be able to SLEEP if i did that to someone, yet alone if my own mother was doing that to a poor worker! fuck this old lady and fuck her dumb daughter as well. had to get this off my chest.
