It is wild to me how some people value accuracy over social harmony
I was talking to a a colleague the other day about yarn (we’re both knitters) and it went like this:
Me: yeah, it sucks that I’m limited in what types of yarn I can use because I don’t tolerate wool well.
Her: is it the lanolin?
Me: idk, I just get very itchy. I’m okay with most merino though.
Her (sharply): so you’re not allergic.
Me: I’ve not been tested, but I itch like crazy even through layers and don’t even want to touch rougher yarns, it’s been this way since I was a kid.
Her: yeah well a lot of people say they’re allergic when they’re actually not instead of saying they just don’t like it.
Me: I mean, I will want to claw my skin off if I wear wool for even a few minutes, so I don’t know what to tell you. Anyway..
It looks pretty innocuous on the surface, but what strikes me is the willingness to potentially insult or upset me by essentially claiming that I’m lying or trying to make my experience with wool look worse than it is. I’m not upset about it because I’m used to some people being this way and I know it’s not normal to think too much on such things, but it really puts in perspective for me how differently I’ve been socialized.
Growing up in a high conflict environment I was constantly walking on eggshells because I never knew when my mother would get insulted by something innocuous I’ve said or done, so for me keeping the peace is as ingrained as breathing. I’ve gotten much better at making waves when necessary, but I think a big part of me still chooses harmony over accuracy because it’s just not worth the conflict? And I absolutely hate when people get nitpicky with such things because the point is not to establish some grand truth, it’s to share an experience or a bit of yourself and as long as you understand what I’m saying, that’s all that matters.
That’s why it’s so fascinating to me how some people just keep going without really worrying about a conflict because it’s just not a thing in their minds I guess? I run through every possible scenario before saying something even mildly aggravating/contradictory, and some just… don’t? What a way to live!
If it was me, the conversation would go like this:
Her: yeah, it sucks that I’m limited in what types of yarn I can use because I don’t tolerate wool well.
Me: oh, that’s too bad! What types of yarn do you usually work with?
Separating two strands of yarn without it becoming a twisty mess?
Yesterday I frogged a sweater that has been blocked and worn (but not very much). It was knit in two strands of 75% merino 25% nylon so it doesn’t halo all that much, but it’s twisting like a beast.
I have an electric winder, so I’ve been separating the strands by pulling them apart three ways (two separate strands and the double-stranded bit to untwist it as much as possible), winding one and piling the other. I can maybe separate 40-50cm before I don’t have the arm length anymore and it takes foreverrrrrrrr.
Is there a smarter way to do it? I have like 3 medium sized and 1 giant ball to separate for future use and I am getting tired just thinking about it. One smaller ball took me 3h to separate and wind 😴
What do you make when you don’t feel like eating?
I’m going through a patch with nausea and a lack of desire to eat, but I still get hungry so I’m looking for ideas on what to make because toast and butter it getting quite boring at this point.
Are fine line tattoos just prone to being more uneven in color?
First fine line (but not my first) tattoo, 10 days old. It’s been healing fine so far, but the more it heals the more I see how uneven the coloring is (the left whisker, ear points, butterfly, the sides are also a bit “dashy”).
I’ve never experienced this with my other tattoos and I’m definitely going back to get it touched up once it heals fully, but I’m just wondering if this is normal with fine line tattoos or if my artist did a bit of a bad job.
How is your robo’s battery life?
I purchased my Eufy X8 Pro in september last year and have been immensely happy with it.
However, I’ve noticed that while it usually had 20-25% battery left after finishing my entire place, that has now dropped to 10-13%. In one instance it had to go back and recharge before continuing because it got stuck on a cat tree base and went in loops for a couple of minutes 😅
What I’m wondering is if this is an expected battery drop percentage after less than a year compared to other models? I usually run it a couple of times a week, so it’s not exactly overworked.
Can I stop radishes from getting “spicy”?
I like to have radishes on hand to snack on, but I’ve noticed that they get “spicy” after about a week in the fridge.
I buy them in little bags, wash and dry and keep in an airtight container to snack on. Google says they develop spice due to heat and age, but they’re kept cold and a week old radish is still quite good.
Are there any tricks to stop them from developing spicyness?
EDIT: I see that radishes are a contentious topic in this community! I have never tried anything but a raw radish, but I’m tempted to try roasting one now just to see how “wrong” it is lol.
And to the people insisting that radishes are supposed to be spicy: remember that taste preferences are different. There’s no badge of honor to get for tolerating spicy food, and more often than not the spice occludes the actual taste. I like my radish to taste like radish, not literally burn my mouth :)
I currently use the Nivea Q10 gradual self-tanner lotion with good results, but it is quite thick in consistency and takes a while to absorb, while the color also goes away pretty quickly.
I have no desire to be out in the sun, so I’m looking for a gradual self-tanner body lotion I can ideally use every day (I shower in the mornings, so I don’t have time to sit and wait too long for it to absorb).
So far my research has led me to:
- Bondi Sands Everyday Gradual Tanning Milk (expensive, but good reviews)
- b.tan Glow Your Own Way (unsure if it’s actually moisturizing or just a low-strength self-tanner gel)
I’m leaning towards the b.tan because they have many options and I’d like something lighter such as a gel, but it’s been many years since I’ve used self-tanner, so I’d really appreciate suggestions for someone who doesn’t do a whole lot of body skin care!
