Interface design - money

Working on design of a finance app to calculate npv (net present value) need to use addition / multiplication/ pow

I could do with decimal type for money as floats/doubles are based on binary

I see there is fixed point decimal paper being worked on.

In the meantime - what is best way to handle this in interface ?

Thinking of asking client to use string and then use long long for the maths after parsing (pennies)? “1500.23” = 150023

What do I return ? String/int? Either way the client would need to transform. I can’t use doubles for this unfortunately.

I suppose I can use double if could give idea to client what error amount is - npv is estimate anyway.

Plucking string up / down

Any idea what causes different harmonics based on the direction of strum/vibration of steel string ? Up / Down

The pitch is the same but the sound varies slightly. I guess it has something to do with angular momentum but that is guess.

Midi controllers/instruments

What’s the best way to handle midi controllers on reaper (Linux) - like simple foot switch and a more complex instrument with pads/keys/controllers

Have an old atom sq in the cupboard and wondered I can get working or if someone had already done work.

Recording levels for electric guitar - gain staging

I’m trying to record electric guitar - my mate who is playing insists on driving it really hard close to 0 and sometimes clipping.

I’ve researched this and studio typically record clean -18 to -6 or -18 to -12

What is the recommend gain - he insists on using his fuzz pedal - I’m trying to convince him to go clean.

Is the level -18 to -6 okay for fuzz and clean? He is trying to tell me we need record loud but I’m not sure.

NAM A2

I'm trying to get the new NAM A2 working on Reaper.

There is a windows/mac VST that is fully featured with EQ/IR loader - this can't be built on linux as it uses iplug :-(

https://www.neuralampmodeler.com/users

I found : https://github.com/mikeoliphant/neural-amp-modeler-lv2

This is a very basic NAM LV2 and I have to use separate IR loader and EQ effect. The sound is good once I get levels in order but wondered if there is a better plug in?

Justice system bust

With so many miscarriages of justice in England with the latest I heard

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/c8925nd4e59o

What can we do to fix it? It’s taking up a huge amount of my time and money. When things smell bad I investigate and see clear issues. I understand things aren’t perfect but when clearing name we should help folks as a country. Justice needs to be balanced

Efivarsfs fs was nearly full

Hi

I couldn't process EFI firmware change due to the efivarsfs not having enough space. I'm on an old dell xps single boot with secure boot enabled. Only thing that worked was going into bios and restoring keys. This brought use down to 42% from 98%. I understand this is outside of control of fedora but sharing here in case others run into this.

Easy effects in pro mode

Easy effects keeps selecting the wrongs channels on my mixer. It defaults to Aux0/Aux1

I have to change link back to Aux2/3 everytime I boot or change an easy effects preset.

Is there a way to default channels as per screenashot from zedi perspective?

Playing with eyes closed

When I’m practising something tricky I close 1 eye or both eyes - unsure but I guess this lets my neural head focus on playing - the amount of data coming into eyes can block learning - is anyone else doing this ?

One of my old school mates who taught be to draw cartoons told me about closing 1 eye is good for precision.

Don’t forget locale for dates if you want to sell software in that locale

Sick to death of working on gigs where folks use
ISO date in the data layer and on the app layer we get non-local dates.

4/4/2026 is ambiguous and can lead to disaster.

Chord transitions - anchors

With chord transitions for the open chords like C - G - Em as example. C - G and G - C is tricky. The only way I've found to move fingers fast enough for beat is to put 1 finger down first as anchor - this seems to help me place other fingers on the right notes - it all happens fast but is that recommended approach? I tried placing all fingers down at the same time but that leads to misfires towards end of songs.

Low level recording in the garden

Thinking of trying to pickup sounds of nature from garden - over summer - including insects - birds - plants

Not sure what type of mics I’d need for that but they would need to be outdoor for weeks.

Any ideas ?

Audio dsp from command line

Using ccp for realtime audio (dsp) and need to develop ui - thinking of doing terminal ui (cli) - just need a few parameters but with modern cpp what is the best way pass data (floats) into realtime non blocking thread ;1-way?

Threads have shared memory right ? Is it just case of using struct to pack params and use raw pointers?

Or should I develop some kind of hub ie in future ui may be something else hence thinking to isolate it from audio

Audio thread <——— hub thread <———ui thread

Are there any multithreaded libs available or is this so low level I need craft my own?
