PSA: Johnny's Wok is temporarily closed

I saw they updated facebook but not much else. They project being closed for a month or two at minimum. Just wanted to put this out there since I see you can still order through the delivery apps.

where the hell can i get a decent gluten free sub

A lot of places are marked gluten-free on google/yelp but don't actually offer gf bread. Salty Shack gave me food poisoning and I'd prefer to not explode out two ends again. Thanks in advance!

TIL researchers won the 2025 Ig Nobel Chemistry Prize for proposing eating Teflon as a zero calorie food. They cited 1960s DuPont studies where rats fed a 25% Teflon diet lost weight with no signs of toxicity, and patented it as a meal additive, but gave up after the FDA would not approve it.

Aight so lately I've noticed some mass reporting going on that is clearly someone trying to get Reddit Admin's attention (selecting options like child abuse, encouraging suicide, shit like that on posts and comments that aren't in any way even joking about those topics). I know some of you have also gotten removals and warnings directly from Reddit Admin. I was under the impression that I see reports first and can manually approve them (which does still occasionally happen), but more and more I'm seeing comments removed by the overlords and I as a mod can't even see the content of them.

From what I'm seeing, the mass reporting is occurring in a way that one user combs through a post or two and flags every single comment, not a bunch of people reporting one thing. So it doesn't really read on the Admin side as "report button abuse" and looks more like "wow this post and all of the commenters are sick fucks."

I don't know what the solution is for this. Reddit seems to be one of the last mainstream sites where we don't have to censor words in increasingly ridiculous ways. I'm wondering if this is partially some AI flagging/removal mechanism, too. Idk any other jerk sub mods but I'd be interested to see if others are experiencing this.

Anyway, it's just kind of concerning and I wanted to make sure y'all know that I've been observing it and trying to understand it. If we get wrongfully labeled as a pro-ED sub, Admin can delete the whole thing without warning. We've been getting some modmails from very angry people who don't seem to be able to read and are convinced this is genuinely a community of 70k+ people who are competing to see who can hold the longest calorie-expunging fart. And nothing I say can open their mind to the possibility that this user base is 95% people in recovery/harm reduction from serious, complicated, long-term EDs, and that the sub content is largely healing and therapeutic for the community.

All that to say, shit sucks and there's not much I can do except to occasionally shout into the black hole that is Reddit's mod support and approve the harmless comments/posts when I see them. Feel free to use this post to vent, discuss, or offer any context you've noticed. Also any meta stuff in general. If anything happens to the sub, the discord server will still be there (until the overlords take that down too 👍👍👍)

Cars getting towed in North Fremont

Anyone else who has to park on the street in North Fremont been towed this year? I parked on Evanston last night and there were no signs up. Had the day off today for an appointment downtown, walked by where my (and like 8 other people's) car had been parked and they were all gone. I parked there last night at around 7pm and found it gone just before 5pm today. Today there was a no parking sign up that dated from June 15th that absolutely was not there last night.

This also happened to me along Dayton earlier this year, and I know it happened to a few other people, too. I'm on my way to grab it now and glad it hasn't been in the lot long, but like... wtf yall. What can I do to prevent this when we can't even get a 24 hour notice?

sidenote - I have to drive for my job unfortunately; I take public transit whenever possible and truly wish I didn't have to have a car :/ Aghhhhhhh

ETA holy shit this is the most amount of people I've ever seen waiting in the lincoln office

ETA2 shoutout to that one employee who made a young girl cry after she had done everything you told her to and waited patiently for hours with her sisters to get their car back. i hope your car battery dies and nobody gives you a jump because you're such an asshole. bitch

Housesitting & catsitting rates?

Hi neighbors,

We have to go overseas for a couple weeks and we're planning to ask friends if they'd be willing to housesit/catsit. We don't have much of a budget but still want to offer them a fair price for their work. Never hired someone for this service before.

What's the going rate around here for housesitting/petsitting? We would need them to check on the house & feed the cats daily, plus change out the litter (it's self-cleaning) twice a week. Cats are strictly indoors & we would not be asking them to stay in our home nor do any cleaning.

Thanks for any insight!

Advice for a couple in Cebu?

Hi! My partner and I will be in the Philippines this December for a wedding (near Busuanga) and a couple family reunions near Laguna and Tagaytay. We're trying to carve out a couple days for ourselves since the entire trip will be full of family obligations otherwise.

We're thinking about staying a couple nights in Cebu after we fly back from Busuanga before driving to the first reunion. My partner is a little unsure of it, though, since he's unfamiliar with the area and only speaks Tagalog (he grew up in Quezon province). On the other hand, I might be thinking a little too ambitiously as a non-Filipina American 😅 I will also note that we travelled to Manila & Quezon province before and managed pretty well.

Can you share any advice or recommendations for a couple staying in Cebu? It would just be a couple nights in mid-December. Also happy to take recommendations for staying elsewhere; Cebu just seems to make the most sense right now since we'll be flying in there from Busuanga 😊

Discord group interest?

Hi everyone,

Mods are exploring the idea of starting a discord server for the community. We could have channels for specific topics and use it as a way to connect and learn from each other as professionals. Please let us know if you'd be interested in this and feel free to share any ideas you have for the hypothetical server :)

What are your favorite overnight trips?

My partner and I are locals and occasionally try to take mini vacations by staying the night somewhere a few hours away. Our favorites have been Port Angeles, North Bend, and the Methow Valley. We're thinking about going somewhere this weekend. Any suggestions that aren't Leavenworth?

We're not trying to do hardcore hikes or see touristy stuff. Just something kinda quiet and different :)

Collections process

Asking for a friend since I've fortunately not yet dealt with this directly. I've done evictions but not had to work with a collections agency.

Friend owns a house and leases it out using a PM who, in her words, sucks. Tenant was evicted and left behind a substantial amount of damage as well as unpaid rent & utilities. Friend is trying to figure out how to do the collections process on her own.

Her issues (other than never doing this before) are that 1. the lawyer used for the eviction won't work on contingency of course and 2. the collections agencies she's called say she needs a full account with them (she can't submit single file claims). She earns an average income and doesn't have a ton of money to throw around. She's asked me for advice.

She has everything documented and is wanting to do this herself since her PM has demonstrated lack of competence. She's reviewed our local laws (WA state) and understands the importance of notices and what constitutes damage in a rental. Could you guys share any advice? All I'm coming up with is bad news that she's likely already figured out (it's probably not going to be worth it; your PM should have vetted better; etc).

Thank you!

Hello! Trying to figure out the business name of a vendor at the Fremont Sunday market. He has a tent and a ton of different colorful body oils. I want to see if I can order some of his stuff online, but the label on the last bottle I have is unfortunately obfuscated - looks like it says "co-pe- nu--". I'll be going to the market again this weekend, but he's not always there. Any leads?

Tenant moving in two weeks ago. Unit has been vacant for two years. It was the only vacant unit in the building and was combined with an adjacent unit until last year.

PUD says we need an inspection for meter labels and to make sure it's safe to reconnect power. They say we can use our preferred electrician and have them send a report over. Great; we get it done last week.

I check in on Monday. They apparently didn't get the report. I call and they say they actually need L&I to check the labels and meters. They have to shut down power to the entire building for awhile, too. Fuck, okay, we'll make it work.

They do that Tuesday. Tenant keeps calling them and me to ask what's up. They tell him they need to do an inspection and also for us to fix the labels. So he tells me this. I tell him that I know, we've done it twice now actually, so they must just be waiting on these reports to process.

Half a week later, still nothing. Electrician starts getting frustrated on our behalf and goes to their office to figure out what's up. Another inspection yesterday and the on-site reps tell them that power can be reconnected and everything's finally groovy now. And we had additional verification this morning that the tenant can call and have service officially started.

He calls and they tell him that the meter labels have to be inspected first.

I need a screaming pillow.

(I spent 20 minutes with PUD going over everything and we were able to get power restored, at least. This job makes me want to take up smoking lol)
