I saw some horror stories of people driving into the park with their EV's and having issues or struggling based on infrastructure, so wanted to provide some insight based on my positive experience since some others may use this info.
I have a 2024 Tesla Model 3 LR RWD, with a EPA range of around 360 miles. I've taken it to Yosemite/Lassen/Pinnacles and had no issues, but was a little more worried about Sequoia/KC because of the elevation and lesser infrastructure. The timeline:
Overall, I loved driving with an EV in Sequoia/KC. The windy roads are much easier with 1-pedal driving since I don't have to keep riding the brakes or switching between the accelerator/brake. If I didn't have destination charging, we still would have made it back to the Visalia supercharger with around 3-5%, which is low but would be higher if we charged to say 90% when initially getting there.
Therefore, I think as long as you have a longer range EV (300+ miles) and either fully charge your car or have destination charging at the hotels, you should be fine. You regenerate quite a bit when you go downhill, around 30-40% of what it cost in energy to get there (i.e. it took 20% to go up to the top, you would get around 6-8% energy back). And if the roads are flat, it uses barely any energy driving from around 40-50 mph because the air is so thin (so little drag on the car).
Got the 993’s for $140 after I saw a post last week about them adding this. it was the 1st time I heard of this site but see it’s either lightly used or 2nds. This was described as like new and I saw no defects or issues. Doesn’t come with a shoe box but I throw mine away so no big deal.
Took a couple months after ordering but quality feels great! Is also able to nest inside the pan upside down.
My light strips on my 2024 Model 3 are cracking and I am taking it to service tomorrow. Does anyone have any success having this done as part of the warranty recently? I see a bunch of posts on reddit from around a year ago, but nothing recently so wanted to see if they would cover it or blame my tints.
I was able to book a last minute reservation in the SF space today and was able to test drive it for around 30 min. For context, I've driven a 2024 Model 3 LR RWD (Highland) for about 1.5 years and also driven my friends R1S Dual Large, so I have some experience with a Rivian. Here are my detailed thoughts below and a comparison to both cars:
Overall, I really enjoyed it much more than the R1S I drove, but I think I prefer my Model 3 just a bit more. However, I felt really happy driving the car and am quite impressed with how far Rivian has come in just a couple years. I think the car is much better than the pre-Highland/pre-Juniper Models, but is around the same as the new Models but costs a bit more. I think at $58K it's a bit of a hard sell, especially since you have to pay extra for paint and the interior to white (the Model Y performance has free paint upgrades). I think in the low 50's is a decent deal and a good price to pay for the car.
Was visiting Italy with my wife and decided to stop by the Tudor shop on Pointe Vecchio to see if the watch was in stock and it was! very comfortable on the wrist and looks amazing in direct light.
I wanted to add my experience with tax-free shopping and refund recently in Italy, just for others who travel soon. I bought a Tudor watch and my wife bought a Celine bag in Florence. While purchasing it, the employees requested your passport and had you fill out a form with your personal information, such as name, phone number, address, and email (important).
They then asked for the credit card number of the card you wanted the tax-free amount refunded to. You can put any credit card number down (doesn’t have to be the same as purchase) and you don’t need the physical card. I used my saved credit number on my iPhone since I used Apple Pay. They will then give you an envelope with the tax free form. Just a note, the refund amounts vary even though the VAT in Italy is 22%. Tudor calculated a 15% refund and Celine calculated a 12.5% refund. However, with the FX and refund it’s still around a 15-20% savings compared to a purchase in California.
After that, you‘ll receive an email from Global Blue (to the email you put down when buying) and information on getting the refund. You can download the app and put in your information and your purchases should show up since they are tied to your passport.
Once at FCO, we went through security to scan our bags (we only carried on), then walked through some shops before going through passport control for the E gates in Terminal 1. After that you’ll see signs for ‘VAT REFUND’ which had a couple kiosks and a helpful attendant with any questions. You can either mail the envelope you received in the mailboxes to the side (if there’s a long line or you need to make your flight), or you can go to the kiosk and scan your passport. There, you will see your purchases and refund amounts. You then scan your boarding pass/put in your departing flight info and confirm all the details. You then get a receipt saying it is approved and should receive the refund in a couple days. You will also get an email from Global Blue confirming it was successful. We didn’t have to have anyone inspect our items.
Overall, the process was super seamless and much easier than I recall since it took less than 2 minutes.
