july 4th 1950..pete seeger and woody guthrie playing at the music inn in lenox, massachusetts. it was a haven for musicians of all backgrounds and genres right next to tanglewood. it featured the "folk and jazz roundtable". unlike a lot of places in the 50s...ALL were welcome to stay there and play.

7/1/1969...cafe au go go in nyc. the solomons who opened it in 1964, had just sold it. richie havens (who had appeared there many times) + a partner bought the club and tried to make it work. it reopened late june and jimi hendrix appeared there on this date. it closed permanently in october 1969.

by the time of this show...the fillmore east had taken over as THE venue for the larger acts to play. they could fill up that old theater with fans (so they wouldn't have to play multiple nights at a small club) and make a lot more money. hendrix used to show up and sit in with lots of the artists who played here in the days before he left for the UK. he knew richie havens well ...they had both been around the neighborhood for years at this point. i'm only assuming that that's why someone of jimi's statue agreed to play here right after richie took over as part owner. RIP to this club...those of us who got there and saw some of the greatest shows ever in this tiny venue, remember.

for juneteenth...june 19 1964 the isley brothers perform at the farewell party for R&B radio d.j. nathaniel "magnificent" montague at the rockland palace in harlem. their unknown left handed guitarist...jimi hendrix (seen on stage at the left) played this show, as did wilson pickett, and ben e king.

much less is well known about radio dj the magnificent montague (wwrl 1600) today. he had, at one time, the largest collection of african american memorabilia in the country. unfortunately, like so many people, his fortunes went down along with the popularity of radio and he had to sell it all when he declared bankruptcy in 2012. incredibly mr. montague is 98 is still with us and lives in las vegas...
here's an article about his incredible collection...sadly it wasn't preserved as one collection. it could have easily been bought by one of the day's billionaires and saved for prosperity.

june 17 1967...the monterey pop festival... this weekend began what the media (not us) labeled the "summer of love". it came about because of an earlier fundrasier, the CAFF festival in LA. the $ it earned convinced lou adler, john philips, derek taylor that there was money to be made in this....

note in this listing from the LA weekly, that they didn't even spell jimi hendrix's or the grateful dead's names right...not to mention some guy named DAVE butterfield (sorry paul).... i'm sure that after this weekend no one would ever get it wrong again...

6/1/1967...the grateful dead play for the first time in nyc, a free concert in tompkins square park. the newspaper article is from the village voice. the photos here have for the most part, never been published before. they were shot by voice photographer fred mcdarrah and only a few were used...

the dead began a run at the cafe au go go on bleecker street that same night. the last photos were taken at that show. i didn't shoot them and can't remember who did or i would give them credit.

in just 2 months, the blues project would break up (little love lost between a few of the members) after playing their last stand at the monterey pop festival in june of 1967. steve and al would, of course go on to form the first phase of blood sweat and tears responsible for the first album only. both steve katz and danny kalb had studied guitar with dave van ronk. photos by don paulsen
