I ended a 6-month situationship with someone I still miss
I’ve been in a situationship with this guy for around six months. In the beginning, it was genuinely really nice. We talked a lot, stayed up talking, sent each other coupley coupley reels and I genuinely felt like I had someone who was there for me.
He had always been honest that he didn’t want a relationship because he told he needs to heal from his previous relationship and needed space. I knew that, and I wasn’t doing things for him because I thought eventually he’d magically choose me. I did them because I genuinely liked him and that’s how I show up for people who matter to me.
Over time, though, I started feeling a distance. He wasn’t as enthusiastic or communicative as he used to be, and I found myself constantly analyzing his texts and wondering what he was thinking.
Then his ex came back into the picture. He unblocked her, they followed each other again, and he wanted to talk to her because they had been important to each other for years. I was actually there when he spoke to her, and afterwards he took pictures with her. I know technically I wasn’t his girlfriend, but it still hurt, especially because of how differently he’d spoken about her before.
I had also been planning his birthday and had ordered him a gift. Not because I thought it would make him choose me, but because I genuinely wanted to make his birthday meaningful.
Eventually he told me that he felt I was getting very attached and that it scared him, and that he was sure he didn’t want to date anyone for a long time.
That made me realize something about myself too: I can’t do this casually. I get emotionally attached, and staying in something undefined while hoping it might eventually become more was going to hurt me.
So I ended it.
He told me I wasn’t the problem, that I was one of the best people he’d met, that I had everything he looked for in someone, and that it felt like the right person, wrong time.
I cried a lot, but I also felt relieved because I didn’t have to constantly analyze everything anymore.
We tried talking normally afterwards, but I realized I couldn’t just become friends with someone I still liked that much. Every half-conversation made me feel like I was getting pulled back into the same cycle of needing him, waiting for his texts and wondering why he wasn’t talking to me like before.
So I told him I think we need to take a proper break because I need to get out of this constant loop of needing him.
He understood and respected it.
I’ve now deactivated Instagram and uninstalled snap too because I know I need the distance.
I still love him. I still miss him. Part of me still wishes this could have worked.
But I also know I can’t spend my life waiting for someone to eventually choose me.
Did I do the right thing by walking away, even though a part of me still wants him back?
