Megathread: The Odyssey Reviews and IMAX FAQ

1. What’s the Big Deal with The Odyssey?
Christopher Nolan made history by making The Odyssey the first feature film ever shot entirely using IMAX 15/70mm film cameras.Nolan estimates the visual detail of these physical film frames to be equivalent to roughly 18K resolution—vastly sharper than any digital projector on earth.

2. Why did the screens look smaller than advertised?
It's likely because you didn't watch it in one of 41 theaters in the world showing true IMAX 70mm film. Full list These screens use the actual 15/70mm True Film & IMAX with Laser (Dual 4K Laser projectors). These are the largest screens, typically 60× 80 feet or larger. They use a squarer 1.43:1 aspect ratio that fills your peripheral vision.

3. But I saw it in IMAX, what did I actually watch?
India currently has zero commercial cinemas capable of projecting physical 15/70mm film. Instead, Indian audiences are watching a digitally remastered version. You probably watched it in a "IMAX with Laser (4K)" format with 1.90:1 aspect ratio.
But, most of the theaters in India are Digital IMAX (2K Xenon), what's commonly called LieMax.

4. So, what did I miss out?
Because Indian commercial screens are capped at the 1.90:1 aspect ratio, you will lose roughly 25% of the frame (top and bottom) that Nolan originally captured.

  • The 1.43:1 Vision: Massive, towering vertical frame.
  • The 1.90:1 Indian IMAX Cut: Slightly letterboxed/cropped version of that frame. However, it still offers significantly more vertical picture than a standard widescreen theater.

5. What is the difference between the usual 70mm films and 15/70mm film?
Vox has a great article explaining the difference between all these formats. 15 refers to the number of perforations per frame.

Film Formats and their relative sizes.

6. Why are the perforations(also called sprocket holes) shown horizontal in the pic here?
Unlike regular films, they are filmed and projected horizontally. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cVP7gR-P0SU

Anyone else from 80s - 90s? (OC)

One of the best villain from classic Indian movies. I still watch this movie time to time and one time I thought, I had to pay an homage to Amrish Puri's performance. So here I am!
