Engine glitter

2015 1.6l base model. I’ve owned it since April, 115k km on the car.

Did an oil change recently, lost the gasket on the drain plug so had to drain the oil after 3 weeks to put a new one on. Happened to be at my mechanic friend’s house as he did some work on my husband’s car, so he drained the oil to replace the plug.

The oil was surprisingly dirty considering I’ve only driven about 300km since the oil change, and when he drained the pan back into the car there were little sparkly bits that my husband referred to as “engine glitter”.

I know I need new brakes fairly soon. And possibly a new cat, because my car keeps giving me the P0420 code. We haven’t done a piston soak yet, but we did use the valvoline restore and protect oil when we did the change. I don’t seem to have noticeable oil consumption, I check the oil every time I get gas and it seems to be consistently the same level (I take pictures).

Am I cooked? We’re going back to him to drain the oil and look inside the engine with a bore scope to see where it might be coming from, but he is recommending not spending any money on the car, and trading it in for something else. He is the mechanic who checked out the car when I brought it, and he feels really bad but he didn’t know. In fact, if we had taken it to a commercial oil change place we would never know there’s metal in my oil.

Golden sunrise

I did a mani with poems for a harvest moon and it was just too bright for my tastes. So I added two coats of the stolen kiss. It toned it down a fair bit, and now my nails look like the sunrise.

Almost safety vest orange

Couldn’t decide what colour to use last night, and husband suggested salmon. Closest I had was poems for a harvest moon, which I got as a reward and haven’t used yet.

It’s REALLY BRIGHT and way outside my normal palette but I noticed that it almost matches my 🦺 so I had to share 😂

Rose water and glycerin

My grandmother on my father’s side had absolutely beautiful nails. She very rarely broke a nail, and kept them long. She was a very active woman, who sewed, painted, made knickknacks out of wood, and loved to explore.

Her entire life, she wore only one nail polish, Revlon totally toffee if I recall. And she kept her hands soft with rose water and glycerin. That’s it. That was her nail/hand routine. No fancy hand cream, no base coats or nail strengthening products. She didn’t even use a top coat.

And her nails were gorgeous. She was proud of them, and sometimes strangers would ask her where she got her acrylics done and she would get SO OFFENDED 😂

So the point of this post is, for one, I wanted to share my grandmother and her beautiful nails with you and secondly, does anyone think that there’s something to the glycerin and rose water as far as healthy, strong nails are concerned?

I know a lot of it had to be genetic and I did not win the lottery where my nails are concerned. They’re never going to be thick like hers were. Her nails were thick almost like men’s nails. Mine are thin and very bendy.

But as I’ve been on this nail journey, with all of my false starts due to getting frustrated and getting gels or press ons, I can’t help but wonder if maybe there’s some value in her approach?

Ridges

I’ve always had vertical ridges on a few nails (mostly pinkie and ring finger) but after gel damage I’m still growing out, I’ve got a few horizontal ridges too. I’m not looking for medical advice, just product advice.

They don’t look great when I polish my nails so I’d like to try a ridge filling base coat.

I’ve got the one from KB Shimmer but it made my nails peel. Any other recommendations? I’m in Canada but am willing to buy online, especially if I can grab a few other things at the same time.

Don’t mind the staining on my nails, I just took off my polish last night and forgot that my nails were stained from wearing Mooncat deadly nightshade (it was worth it though)

Products used:
None in photo but I’ve been using witchcraft rock solid hardener and this is the longest my nails have been in months.

Missing bolt in splash guard?

Had a small mishap when changing the oil (pretty sure we lost the gasket on the oil plug) and it’s leaking (very slow leak). Anyway, I went to take a picture to see where the oil is coming from and noticed that it looks like I’m missing one of the bolts on the skid plate / engine splash guard.

I’m a bit of a perfectionist so I’d like to pick up some new bolts since we’ll have the car up to fix the leak anyway. But I cannot for the life of me find the spec for the bolts. AI says they’re 10mm bolts but the video I watched showed washers on the bolts and I have no idea how long they need to be or the thread, so I’m at a loss for what to buy.

I’m sure it really doesn’t matter that much but it bugs me so I want to fix it 😂.

Does anyone know what bolts I should buy?

Post car wash shorties

I did this manicure six days ago and then washed my car today. Without gloves or any kind of protection for my thin, bendy natural nails.

Somehow I didn’t have a single chip, despite using my thumbnail to scrape something off my door, and getting into every crevice that had any dirt in it since the last car wash (I park on the street so she gets pretty dirty, plus we had water restrictions recently and couldn’t wash my car for two months).

Polish is Mooncat in sirens deceit (4 coats due to damaging a few nails). Base coat is witchcraft rock solid. Essie gel couture top coat.

I did put an extra coat of witchcraft on day 3 which helps prolong my manicure. I’ve got bubbles on a couple of nails thanks to it being super hot and humid recently.

Lost knitting bag

My dear friend lost her knitting bag recently, with a project inside, and she’s hoping to get it back. She’s not on Reddit so I offered to post here to see if maybe we can get more people to see it.

She posted on marketplace and the spam filter thinks I’m selling something. Here’s her text from the post:

LOST - On Saturday, July 25 I was completing some tasks around South Granville. When I left home I had my knitting with me and didn't have it when I got home. I've called everywhere I remember stopping.

It's a brown leather bag with a clasp lock, there was a pair of socks I was working on inside, and a set of knitting needles. I have been working on the socks for months and restarted a few times, so the whole bag is meaningful to me. The bag is like the one shown, the picture of the socks is from months ago and under black light, the the needles were in a black mesh bag inside the leather bag.

Reward provided for whoever found it and can return the whole thing.

She’s already checked the places she visited the day she lost it, and contacted TransLink lost and found.

Aftermarket stereo installation

I went to my local car audio store since looking online for a new head unit was breaking my brain. This is the one I picked up, and I specifically told the sales guy that I wanted to keep the steering wheel controls.

He said I don’t need an adapter or special wiring harness, but now I’m thinking he is wrong, after watching a bunch of installation videos.

I’ve got a 2015 base model, so nothing fancy like an amp or upgraded sound system to think about, but I do use the steering wheel controls a lot and don’t want to lose them.

If I go on Crutchfield, the website says I need about $500 worth of extra stuff which also doesn’t sound right.

I’m feeling super confused and overwhelmed at the moment because I can’t find a clear answer. I have manual a/c and none of my car information is viewable on the stock head unit, so the idatalink maestro that Crutchfield says I need is overkill since my car isn’t controlled through the head unit, it’s literally just going to be my car stereo, navigation and backup camera.

Help/advice is appreciated! I’d like to do the install myself but now I’m not so sure I’ve got everything I need.

Email from interested buyer?

I’m new to selling on Poshmark but have made several purchases. Yesterday I listed several items and got an email from another user asking if one of my newly listed items is still available. I don’t see a comment on the item and I’m not comfortable emailing them back directly, but the email seems to have come directly from the person, not from Poshmark.

I’m guessing this is a scam but I’m also questioning how they got my email address.

Any thoughts? I haven’t replied since the only communication is via email.

Canadians: witchcraft nail hardener

Since it’s getting harder to source nail hardener with formaldehyde I thought I’d ask if anyone else is using Witchcraft rock solid hardener. It’s made in Canada and has formaldehyde! Bonus is it’s widely available (I’ve seen it at Shoppers and Walmart) and under $15!

I’ve been using it for a week and like it so far!

Products used:
Witchcraft rock solid
Mooncat the glory of innocence x2 coats
Mooncat speed demon top coat

Nail polish on keyboard

So I did something silly. I had a weird spot on my thumb and threw on some nail hardener to smooth it out, then went back to typing. Didn’t realize that it got on my keyboard! It’s only on the space bar, fortunately, but how the heck am I supposed to get it off without ruining my keyboard?

Right now I only have acetone, which is notorious for ruining plastic. I read somewhere that rubbing alcohol would work and it absolutely did not do anything at all. This is my work computer (Microsoft surface) so I can’t just leave it like this.

Help!

Looking for a new iron

Well, my Rowenta iron kicked the bucket yesterday. I sew a lot, but not professionally, and this is the longest I’ve ever had an iron, but I’m sick of shelling out money every 4-5 years to get a new one.

I can’t go gravity-fed because I don’t have a permanent place for it and also have very limited storage.

Does anyone have an awesome iron suggestion? I use a lot of different fabrics and need steam. I mostly sew garments and do a little quilting. One thing I really like about my iron is that it’s got LOTS of steam holes and the tip is very pointy for getting into small spaces.

I know a lot of people love the cheap Black & Decker iron but I had one and I hated it. It felt like going from driving a BMW to a go-kart.

Located in Canada, so that could limit my options a bit. I really don’t care where I buy it, I just want something that will last.

P0420 again

2015 base model, 1.6l gdi engine with 115,772km on it.

Third time this code has come up since I bought it in March. I ran cataclean through it and the code came back. Test has been 91.7% every time it comes up (it will come up if it’s under 95%).

Last oil change was in February when it was traded in, and I’ve driven 1500km since then. I don’t think I’m burning oil based on the dipstick.

We haven’t taken it to a mechanic yet. The previous owner changed the fuel injectors in December. They also replaced the oxygen sensors and spark plugs in November.

Not sure what to try next. I have plenty of power, no trouble starting or getting up to speed, even on hills. Any suggestions would be much appreciated.

Replacing the head unit

I have a 2015 base, with manual a/c and am looking to replace the head unit so I can have navigation and a backup camera (instead of using my phone for navigation). Looking for feedback on a good, reliable and hopefully affordable head unit to replace the stock system. Needs to have AirPlay and android auto since the other person who sometimes drives my car doesn’t have an iPhone.

I am in Canada so I may not have access to some sellers. I’m comfortable installing myself.

I’ve been looking at this one on Amazon but it doesn’t have a lot of reviews. I’d like to keep the steering wheel controls, and this one says they work.
