Living as a trans person in a refugee camp in East Africa is very different from what many people imagine when they think of Pride. There are no big parades or celebrations for us. Instead, Pride means finding the courage to be ourselves, supporting one another, and holding onto hope despite discrimination and fear.
Every day we keep going is an act of resilience. Even when it’s difficult to express ourselves openly, we remind each other that our identities are valid and that we deserve to live with dignity and respect.
To everyone in this community, thank you for creating a space where trans people can be seen, encouraged, and accepted. Seeing your journeys gives many of us hope, even from far away.

Hey everyone,
I wanted to introduce a perspective that isn’t often discussed here. There are transgender men living in refugee camps across East Africa, navigating many of the same challenges around identity, presentation, safety, and confidence that people talk about in this community.
For many of us, access to gender-affirming resources, clothing, grooming products, healthcare, and even privacy can be extremely limited. Because of that, passing and being stealth can look very different from what is often discussed online.
I’m curious:
What was the biggest non-medical change that helped you feel more confident in your masculinity?
Are there any grooming, posture, communication, or clothing tips that made a noticeable difference for you?
What advice would you give to a trans man who is just starting his journey in a place with very limited resources?
I think it would be interesting to hear experiences from people living in different countries and circumstances. Sometimes the conversation around passing focuses on access to resources, but creativity and confidence can play a huge role too.
