Household UPF availability strongly predicts obesity rates from a study across 19 countries

TL;DR: Researchers analyzed national household budget surveys across 19 European nations to see how much of a household's total dietary energy comes from Ultra-Processed Foods (UPF) using the NOVA classification system. They found a strong positive correlation between national UPF availability and adult obesity prevalence. Even after controlling for factors like income, smoking, and physical inactivity, every 1 percentage point increase in household UPF availability was associated with a 0.25 percentage point increase in national adult obesity.

Key Highlights from the Study: Massive Regional Spread: Household availability of UPFs varied wildly across Europe.
Lowest: Portugal (10.2%) and Italy (13.4%)
Highest: Germany (46.2%) and the UK (50.4%)

Average Breakdown: Across all 19 countries, the median average household food energy purchased was: 33.9% Unprocessed / Minimally Processed Foods
20.3% Processed Culinary Ingredients
19.6% Processed Foods
26.4% Ultra-Processed Foods

Some questions from first time visitors

Hi, we are travelling to Chessington WOA in September for 2 full days with a 11 month old and 4 year old mainly due to paw patrol as our 4 year old loves them! We'd appreciate any answers / help with the following:

Best way to travel to and from Heathrow? We're thinking taxi as public transport seems long and challenging with young kids.

Will Savannah splash pool be reopened by mid September?

How to keep a just walking 11 month old happy? Soft play place?

How long should we plan to be in paw patrol area? Our 4-year-old is mad about them so will probably want to do everything.

Do the hotel rooms have microwaves so that we can sterilise bottles? if not, is there anywhere we can use a microwave?

Anything else to bear in mind? We'd appreciate any tips or advice thanks.

Have the developers ever actually shared the concrete error numbers from those validation datasets?

I know Greg and the team have published some fantastic articles on how they test the algorithm, and they mention using "absolute monthly weight change prediction error" as their main benchmark to see how well the engine is running.

My question is: Have the developers ever publicly shared the actual, concrete error numbers from their validation datasets? Like, is there a known stat for what the average user's monthly or weekly prediction error in pounds actually looks like?

I'm a bit of a DIY number cruncher myself and have backtested some of my own models so I'm curious how they stack up against the experts.

Eating more fatty meat than leaner cuts?

Hi all, recently I've come across some body builders who say they tend to eat more fatty meats (e.g. mince beef and chicken thighs) than leaner cuts like chicken / turkey breast because they have a better micronutrient profile, and they also just taste nicer. Is there any science behind this? What about the standard advice from sources like the world health organisation to avoid fatty or red meat? I tried Lean Beef Steak Mince 5% Fat today instead of my usual chicken breast and to be fair it is quite tasty and satiating.

I think I'm done, for now...

After posting about FC here a few days ago, I saw a good deal in a local stationery shop so had to get it. Really excited to try the KT dive. The price wasn't too bad on amazon.jp. I really like the other KT pencils so if the reviews are anything to go by, it will quickly become my all time favourite. Taking my time enjoying the unboxing, it's a bit of a collection milestone I suppose...

KT Metal 0.5

KT pencils are emerging as my favourite, I especially love the roulette. I think I'm more a 0.5 guy which surprises me as I really liked 0.7 when I started collecting. Excited to try this out.

Is a screen protector necessary?

I just got a 10a a after upgrading from pixel 6. I used a screen protector for pixel 6 but I'm not even sure if it was completely necessary. How tough is the screen? Is it likely to survive accidentally dropping it on concrete or tiles?

What are my maintenance calories based on my recent data?

Hi all, what do you think my maintenance calories are based on this data? My 7-day average weight change is the difference between my average weight across one entire week and my average across the next, smoothing out daily fluctuations. For example, if my daily weights average 241 lbs in Week 1 and 240 lbs in Week 2, my 7-day average weight change is a clean net loss of 1 pound. My 7-day average calories is the total number of calories I eat in a week divided by seven, giving me a stable daily intake figure that accounts for high and low days. Thanks!

Demoralised after maintenance calories are too high

Hi all, recently my maintenance calories calculations have been too high so I've lost less weight each week than I expected. This is bothering me as it feels like I'm putting in an honest effort but not getting the full benefits. Any one else struggle with this? I've tried many different ways of calculating maintenance but at the moment the most accurate for me seems to be the Katch-McArdle (Hybrid) by sail rabbit:

https://www.sailrabbit.com/bmr/

I've also gone down a spreadsheet rabbit hole similar to n-suns spreadsheet. The basic concept is estimating based on averages from previous weeks. What's the most reliable method you have found?

I dropped one of my favourites, the rotting 600

Really disappointed. Is there anyway I can fix it? The metal tip does fit back in but the lead doesn't inject into it. The metal tip was bent when I picked it up, I dropped it from about 4ft onto a laminate floor. I'd appreciate any help. Thanks!

Recommendation: Chasing Basketball Heaven (TW: Suicide)

Hi all,

I really enjoyed some recommendations for podcasts that I found on reddit so want to pay it back and make my own recommendation:

https://30for30podcasts.com/chasing-basketball-heaven/

**Trigger Warning: Premeditated suicide.** The *30 for 30* podcast explores the tragic life of Martin Manley, an eccentric 1980s sports fan who used advanced analytics to predict the NBA’s 3-point revolution decades before the rest of the league. However, his compulsive need for data and control took a dark turn when he spent years meticulously orchestrating his own suicide for his 60th birthday. In 2013, the exact moment he took his life, a massive, pre-paid website he secretly built went live—flooding the internet with a deeply unsettling, highly organized digital archive of essays, financial records, and personal philosophies explaining his final decision to die while still healthy and in total control.

Caran d'Ache 844 (849 included for comparison)

Just got this today and so far it's very similar to the 849. I paid about 3 times more for the 849 but the 844 was on sale for half price. Anyone know why the 849 costs more? Also, this also has the mild rattle that I posted about before. There's been different views on whether the rattle is normal so I asked Caran d'Ache directly about this and they said:

"We can confirm that a slight rattling noise can be normal on the 849 mechanical pencil due to the design of its internal mechanism and the presence of metal components inside the barrel. Even with the lead removed, a small amount of movement may still be perceptible and can produce a light rattling sound when the pencil is shaken. That said, the rattling should remain relatively discreet and should not affect the functionality, quality, or writing performance of the pencil. If the noise is particularly loud or if you notice any issue with the mechanism itself, we would recommend contacting your retailer again for further assessment."

Recent new arrivals

It's going to take a few weeks to try these out properly but so far I love them. My only concern is the rattle on the Caran d'Ache but apparently that's normal. My favorite is the Pilot S20 0.5, I may even prefer it to my previous favorite the rotring 600 0.7...

Concerns with new Caran d'Ache 849

Hi, I got this pencil today and it rattles, even after I take the lead out. I think it's the inner tube. Also, the clip comes off surprisingly easy, you can just pull it down. Is this normal? Just doesn't seem right for such an expensive pencil. Should I return it? Thanks.

The Drehgriffel No. 2 from Leuchtturm 1917

I got this a few days ago and it is the closest contender yet to my favorite pencil the rotring 600 0.7. I still really enjoy the heavy grip and metallic feel of the rotring but there is so much to appreciate about the drehgriffel - the old school 1920s look, the robust design, the twist mechanism, what's not to like?
