1927 / 28 Yankees Pitcher

1927 / 28 Yankees Pitcher

This card is particularly special, if i remember correctly, 20 years ago he was my first signed goudey. How terribly short sighted I was to sell everything. I promised myself I would do my best to get another......

Todays mail: I havnt seen these in 6 months....

The consistency of grading is all over the board, even though they were all sent in together. Nevertheless, eye appeal will always be better than a random numerical evaluation.

If anybody is wondering which card is the most difficult to obtain....its "The Polish Wizard" Pete Joblonowski (err Appleton) he legally changed his name to Appleton in 1934 they were crucifying the pronunciation of his given last name....side note, as a youth he was an accomplished classical piano player. He broke his mother's heart when he told her he was gonna play baseball. He didnt have the best career....however he was recognized as being the "finest piano player" in the major leagues(lol) .

I paid $17.95 for the card, the seller thought some kid just wrote all over it and had no idea about it. ☆ You have to know things that others may not ☆ The Dick Coffman card was from the same collection , i paid $16.00 for that one. All kidding aside, that may be the only opportunity for me to obtain a Pete Joblonowski/Appleton twice signed card. Im thrilled.

There are a lot of great cards in this group that are not coming around often.

I may never have a chance for another:

I have been asked why I dont go to the National. Its finances and time, or the other way around. What it would cost me to go, that money can buy a significant card. Here it is. This is a trip to the National in a nice hotel and dinners.

Uncle jimmy had one, the nicest on record, that is in one of the top collections, only 2 others for us to squabble over. I was very fortunate for a fellow collector/friend (whom lives clear across the country) offer this to me. All I had to do was run up the credit card.

This man was considered the most successful Cuban born MLB player until the 70s? Why is his goudey autograph so impossibly difficult? He stopped playing after 1934 (majors) went back to Cuba to play/coach, etc etc.

Ill put this is perspective, there was a collector (at the time) had the most signed cards, he didnt get this one until he was around 219. This was his example.

Off to psa for a red dual label, a measly extra $300 for the honor, even though they already did the leg work.

4 more > headed to psa

I posted the bridges earlier, the Waite Hoyt showed up and those 2 cards showed up together at a local card shop in Iowa, I wound up with them. The Hoyt isnt my favorite autograph as he used 2 initials , however, most of his signing are in black sharpie and literally ruin the card and its sloppy. Im thrilled to have a period signature on a nice background for a quarter of the price they sell for.

Al Spohrer is not an easy pick up, this is the first in two years I've seen available.

Glenn Myatt, passed in 1969, psa has 5 on the books, this is a tough get.

Lastly, I went to do my submission and psa minimum crossover now is $199 each, I find that tough to digest especially when its already in a psa holder. Raw cards are now 105 minimum price. I cracked those sums-of-btches. Know whata i mean.

u/randskarma — 24 days ago

Here's a tough one.....passed 1968

The signature is period and clean. He was not an avid signor, Tom had an outstanding pitching career in the 30s. He went to war in the 1940s, came back completely changed man and alcoholism was now apart of his life. I was very fortunate to catch this card, the front surface is a lovely pallette and a well placed, nice sized signature.

Remember the seinfeld episode about Festivus and Frank's dinner with the airing of grievances......heres my contribution:

After all these years, why would the decision makers at cgc use clear slabs, have you handled one? Fingerprints all over it. Yes , you can sleeve it, thats not the point. See the reverse, JSA slaps a friggin sticker on the back of the card....ffs how stupid!!! I wont even go into the moronic idea that there wasnt a better way. Smh!!!

This is one reason why im an autograph collector first and goudey collector second on this journey. Itll go to psa for crossover, itll be graded A and whatever the auto is ( my opinion an 8) .

There are only 4 on the psa pop report, now there will be 5.

3 more to the ensemble....

A sincere , very sincere thank you to a very seasoned member here for the opportunity to obtain the two graded examples. Very much obliged.

The Hugh Critz card mini set is now complete (2) . Whats interesting: he is the 3rd card from the beginning of the set & the 3rd card from the end of the set.

The Bluege (raw) card is actually a great pick up. Yes, its a (1) the signature is very strong, clean background, ive seen a few of his felt tip autographs and theyre smudged, this one is actually quite clean. This mini subset is complete as well.

Discussion, how the market has changed .....

First off, this is NOT about PSA , its about an ingredient in the hobby overall, and its evolution. I digress:

Uncle Jimmy said he never spent more than a couple dollars on any one card, yall know that outcome.

In Jefferson Burdick days....the Wagner was around $50, obviously the rest were relative nickel and dimes

I got jumped back in 2005, I owned all the goudey ruths, grading was in full swing then. Basically psa 1 gehrigs were $300 ish, ruths $400 - $500 (yellow always more) you could get a nice psa 2 under $1000. A psa 8 #144 was $25,000, psa 7 mantle $35,000, same with lajoie.

Wagners psa 1s were under $100,000, am sgc 40/3 sold for $960,000.

I cant speak for yall, but I dream of finding a great stash (i buy old houses and its possible, though unlikely) imagine if I did find a great collection and wanted to keep as many as I could, my grading fees today would literally be impossible to pay.

When i was a kid growing up in the 80s a new mustang gt 5.0 was $13,000. Grading a psa 4 ruth would cost more than that.

Imagine those pioneers in the hobby being told this is what it costs to do business in 2026. Ol Mr Mint would have a turrets episode.

So, 4 years ago I bought an old pharmacy 2 story bldg....

The upstairs was stuffed with tons of old items, used as storage and the owner was a hoarder.....

There was a locked cabinet , then a safe inside. I kept the conlon box (1992) as a display piece because I always was a pre war collector. I wasnt back in the hobby at this point. I thought you'd like to see a few photos.

u/randskarma — 2 months ago

...and then he passed 8 weeks later

He was very frail, at the last second Bob Feller handed him a bat to lean on.....the bat is in the 2nd photo.

u/randskarma — 2 months ago

Kindly offer your opinions....

He was a notorious alcoholic, psa/dna has 2 examples. He was running out of room signing. Whatcha think...

When you rescue/adopt a senior dog.......

.....and she makes it her home too :)

We had the worst storm in our county's history when a hurricane came through. Power was out in some places over a month, no running city water for a few days: she was by the traffic light / near train tracks, she let me come to her and pick her up....not in particular good shape. 2 years later she is beyond loved.

u/randskarma — 2 months ago

Anybody with a better eye....

Would welcome any opinions (autograph) if you think this is worthy of a $125 psa/dna fee....

The "R" and "m" are a lil sus, but he was running out of room.

Mind you, he was a notorious alcoholic and troublemaker. 2020 uncle jimmy had one and it was the 1rst psa/dna example. Today theres a grand total of 2. Passed in 1969, id say this is rarer than hen's teeth.

Please share your thoughts....

Ive never seen this in 20 years

Im no goudey expert, sticking my toe in the water 20 years ago, ive seen a number of wonderful items. I backed out of the hobby from 2014 - 2024. This showed up in there somewhere.

I learned early on the Ruth 144 card was the double print, taking the place of where card 106 would have been. Goudey knew what they were doing when they did that.

When it came time to rectify the situation, I knew the 106 card was printed in 1934, it also had a hybrid look to it, I didnt put much thought into it.

Here were are, an unbelievable piece of goudey history. The uncut sheet of the 106 card and its companions from the press. I am in awe.

Imagine if Mastro didnt slice up the t206 sheet with the wagner in it. This is on that scale.

This is incredible (to me)
