Using scrap wood to make hanging plant baskets

Y’all may remember my pergola project from a few months ago.

https://www.reddit.com/r/BeginnerWoodWorking/s/PfBkKiZCNS

Well I had a ton of left over wood. I sold all the full length pieces on Facebook market place but I had a ton of 1x2 scraps left over and I wasn’t sure what to do with them.

Until now.

I cut up some blocks and made these hanging plant baskets, tacked together with some wood glue and brad nails. Initially, I used the brad nails I had on hand (2”) which were waaaay too long - I had to snip all the end pieces hanging out. I ended up getting 1.25” and the remaining baskets I made were flawless.

I used the same clear ready seal I originally used on my pergola and fence, and then got a 50’ length of galvanized cable that I cut up and crimped to use as hangers (instead of chain).

Once assembled and sealed, I stapled fiberglass window screen to the inside to prevent soil from falling out during waterings, and placed a handful of orchid bark to further prevent fall out and ensure airflow to the roots.

And here’s my first hanging basket plant - philodendron micans. I love the contrast of the velvety green leaves against the geometric redwood blocks.

Since getting the appropriate sized nails, the last few assemblies have gone together clean and smoothly. I plan to build a bunch of these as Christmas gifts for my planty frens 🌱❤️ (I have more 1x2 scraps than I know what to do with, even after gifting a ton away)

Happy woodworking, y’all

Protect the blue collar before the green dollar

Historically speaking, unionization was prompted by the power imbalance between individual workers and industrial employers.

The National Labor Relations Act of 1935 legally protected the right to unionize and bargain collectively.

Many people think unions are just about fighting for better wages and benefits. But unions also protect job security by providing grievance procedures and just-cause protections, which make groundless firings harder to do. Unions also push for stronger safety standards and have mechanisms to report safety violations without fear of retaliation, which is particularly important in manual labor workplaces.

Strong unions help reduce wage gaps (including by race and gender) within the workforce, and empower workers to negotiate as a group instead of individually. Unions can fight for broader worker protections (minimum wage, overtime rules, etc) beyond their own membership.

As a Persian woman in a unionized, blue-collar, male-dominated field, I stand by our union workers. Hold the line!

My bucket corn!

I planted 30 stalks in fifteen 5 gal buckets. So far I have pulled 16 ears, I have about 20-24 more still growing.

My most respectable ear (most completely pollinated) is about 3” 🤣

This is my first year gardening and I really didn’t expect my corn project to be productive in the slightest. I planted it more as a living wall between myself and my neighbor’s dogs lol

I think I’ll make some elote

6 years ago, I was sold a spent node. This is it now.

I have never seen anything like this.

I have over 500 houseplants, but when I first got into plants, I bought an albo but it just never grew… upon learning more about plants and nodes, I realized it had already sprouted its node and it had been cut. I was super bummed. I did use keike paste on the stem 6 years ago to try to active any growth at the time and it never did anything.

So this has just been a single leaf albo chillin on a shelf in a south facing window ever since. I’ve never repotted it. I hardly water it.

Today I just notice this monstrosity of growth 🤣 so wild!

Flea market find. Unlabeled. Any guesses?

Based on shape, I’d guess Buena Mulata. Based on foliage, I’d guess purple tiger.

My garden space, sorta

I don’t have much in the way of in-ground planting space, and also the soil here is adobe which is miserable to dig and is inconsistent with moisture with seasonal changes.

I had a 4 car tandem driveway so I fenced off half of it and built a pergola/shade house to create a garden patio. Everything is in pots and is on irrigation.

I have peppers, zukes/squash, cukes, Brussels, more tomato varieties than I can count, onions, garlic, herbs, blueberries, raspberries, blackberries, watermelon, avocado, 6 diff citrus, apples, pomegranate, sunflowers, and 4 corn varieties.

I did the corn in 5 gallon buckets, two stalks per bucket, and amended the soil with lots of worm castings and have done one nitrogen fertilizer since planting and they are exploding. Most stalks have two ears. I did not expect them to do as well as they have. The first two photos were taken a month before the third photo, you can see how much the corn has grown in just 4 weeks.

My first flush of peppers were tiny. My shishitos were maturing while a quarter of the size they should be. Now my second flush seems to be growing to proper size. I also have poblano, Serrano, pepperocinis, jalapeños, and a sweet pepper.

My fruit trees are still smol, the root balls were tiny so I’m going to wait to transplant to larger pots end of season or next, when I’ll have more yard space (the rest of my backyard is a construction zone right now).

What else do you recommend that I can plant that would do well in a pot? TIA.

Shishitos. Is this because of a heat wave?

They are turning while still smol. I have about 8 plants in pots, all are on drip irrigation 3 days a week, I’ve given them fox farms fert. I just snipped all my 1-2” green shishitos before they turn. None of my Serranos, poblanos or jalapeños have prematurely turned yet.

Stayed at a Marriott property, questionable business practices

I just learned of some concerning information regarding a property I stayed at. I booked it through Marriott.

The resort is in Greece. In many of the hot tourist destinations in Europe, people move to the location for seasonal work in the hospitality industry. They typically work from April to October, with limited time off during this 6 month period of time. Maybe 1-2 days off a month.

I just recently learned that all the seasonal workers at this particular resort have not gotten paid since the start of their contract in April. They have not been paid wages, nor gratuity. Everybody from wait staff to house keeping to bartenders to maintenance have not been paid.

I understand Greece has its own corrupt laws that pertain to employment standards, but would the Marriott brand keep a resort like this in network knowing there are unfair business practices affecting employees? Does Marriott do anything to vet or screen these properties before including them in the chain? I would be no more inclined to stay at a resort that doesn’t pay employees and steals their tips, than I would a property that uses child labor or other exploitative practices. Very disappointed to learn of this.

First attempt at a California patch

I have mystery water coming from under my baseboard (lower right corner of first pic between toilet and shower pan). I thought it was for sure my shower valve, but it was all for naught. Dry as a bone. Guess I’m checking my shower pan for hairline cracks next 🤷🏻‍♀️

He said he hates both of them and wants to rip them out. I have them hiding in my shop to callous until the rains pass. The other arm was saved as well, just not pictured.
