My work uses a ton of apps including Jira to manage everyone, I'm not a develop or anything related so there is a ton of extra stuff that isn't useful to me. Its overwhelming when working with, I have to constantly search for the right button among the 90 clickable things on this page. MS loves jamming extra stuff and forcing their AI stuff on you only adding to the bloat.

So I vibe coded my own version that uses Jira's API and retains 100% of the features I need, done in a much lighter way. I can control the look, feel, and function of everything.

Just thought I'd share the idea and how AI can be good when used in the right way. This app is just my own personal thing, no repo or anything.

Those Of You Who Had Forestry Mulching Done, 1 Year Later, What Do You Wish You Knew/Did?

Live in Western NC, been working to manage my acreage since moving onto it a year ago. Everything is in actually pretty good shape, no real brushy undergrowth, its mainly just clearing out smaller stuff and clearing out downed limbs to reduce fire load. Make it all look a bit tidier and have a clear line on property lines.

My woods is mostly hardwoods, very little pine. There are some back sections that have Rhododendrons, going to keep most in place. Some areas have some younger trees, so I was going to select the best looking/strongest ones and thin the rest to give them more room and less competition.

Any advice?

  • How not to clear out too much? Too little?
  • What you wish you knew?
  • What to ask the person you hire?
  • I've hears about "sub-soil" mulching vs regular?
  • Expectations on stumps etc?
  • Other things I should know or look out for?

What did you build for yourself thats NOT for business/work/income/productivity/games - Fun and casual only

There is a lot of focus on people building practical tools for business, have an angle to earn money, do things for their work, lots of coding utilities, and productivity tools.

All that is great, but I wanted to hear about the app you built for yourself only that has no commercial use at all. It is just for your enjoyment and fun, setting aside games because that could be for others or grow into a business.

Also avoid productivity use cases, I want to hear about the thing that is just because, that is something you said I don’t care, I just want it to exists for me.

Bonus points for things that you build and you now use regularly.

The older I get the more I’m good with getting away from it all. This is my actual house, nestled in the woods, my driveway is half mile long and I back up to 32,000 acres of wilderness.

New Workbench Setup In My New Workshop

I have been setting up my brand new shop, just built a new home with a basement and wanted to have a way to have easy access to all my regularly used tools while working at my workbench.

There Are A Few Parts:

  • Board: MDF painted matte black
  • Mount: A Frame I hung the boards on
  • Mini Buckets: Displayed on top shelf
  • Bench: Two Seville Classics in graphite
  • Holders: 3D printed, many custom designed
  • Mounts: Many magnet mounts I bought
  • Cart: HF Mechanics Tray Cart for main tools
  • Chest: US General tool chest from HF

Frustrations With Common Options:

I have only found frustration with pegboard in my past shops and I hate the look of the common french cleat walls that many use. I decided on using MDF panels cut 2 feet wide, 4 feet tall, that are hung on (ironically) french cleats on a wall hanger I built behind the board.

The other thing here was people sometimes spend months to a year obsessing over their french cleats and hangers, custom making something for every little tool. I wanted something that looked good but didn't take forever, I think all in this took me 3 days from start to finish if you include waiting for paint to dry and custom designing some 3D prints etc.

Only Essentials Avoids Clutter:

To each their own, but many shops I see literally every tool hung up, mounted etc. The common First-Order Retrievability ethos by Adam Savage is strongly adopted and in practice I've seen it just add up to a lot of clutter and not reduced friction.

I took all my tools and put them in a box at the far end of the shop. Then as I needed something I pulled it out and gave it a home on the board. What I was left with is a set of tools, organized well, that I actually used all the time.

I then have my second order tools that are in my US General tool chest, then my third order (rarely used) tools in another part of the shop. This means 95% of the things I need are right in front of me and the last 5% I can get quickly.

Flexibility With Panels:

I figured that the 2x4 foot format was a good size to be flexible enough and easy to move around or replace if I needed to. The panels hang on a continuous french cleat so they can be moved around, nudge left and right, and they're heavy enough (3/4 MDF) that they aren't going to come off the rail.

I liked the flexibility of being able to mount things wherever I needed, if I moved things or made a mistake I just move it, and half the time I cover the hole. The rest of the time I just take a black sharpie and color the hole and it basically disappears. Over time if a board gets too much, I can just replace that one part.

Specialty Panels:

In the future if I have a particular project that needs a certain set of tools, I can have a dedicate panel that I can quickly swap out without any fuss. There are 5 panels I can either swap or maybe even work in a extra one.

Screw Driver Holder:

The thing I spent the most time on was figuring out the right setup to hold screwdrivers. It seems silly, but most options (made, bought, 3D prints) don't have enough support vertically or are too loose in hope to accommodate a wide range of screwdrivers that they don't work well.

Most holders bought tend to have large holes and only a thin depth which leads them to tipping over, are hard to grab quickly and look messy. The holder I made was really simple. but drilling though a whole 2x4 sideways was tricky because my drill press can only go so far.

I then beveled the holes so its easy to get the screw driver into the hole, the hole is sized so it fits easily without being too loose, and because the hole is 3.5 inches tall, the screw drivers don't tip over making it hard to grab.

Magnet Mounts:

I wanted most of my things on magnets because of the speed of access and ease of cleaning up. Magnet pads means each item has a place and you notice its missing without wasting a lot of time tracing tools etc. I had experimented with making my own magnet holders, but found the inject molded options out there were more durable and due to the quantity I needed were much faster option.

The hardest part was finding options that didn't have silly branding on them, most of these were intended for fishing tools or pew pew mounts.

3D Prints:

I had not planned on so much 3D printing, but I got most of my stuff mounted with magnets and found that I had some items that didn't make sense to have on a magnet, weren't ferrous. I was able to find a few per-designed things off Makerworld, but I had to make the tape measure, pen holders, and Dremel bit holders.

A lot of the designs out there add way too much clutter, they kitchen sink things, make them awkward to use because you're constantly working around things you barely use. Because most options were too big and were designed to hold everything, not just essentials, I designed several of the things you see. .

How do you balance giving AI workflow examples to show your skills are current without giving away things that are big time savers?

One of the core thoughts I've had on AI was that I was going to use AI thoughtfully to streamline work and get time back from it; that time isn't time given back to the company, its for my personal benefit.

I am in marketing and every interview I am in is constantly asking about AI. Some companies are pretty clueless so you can share a few thoughts and sound like you're up to speed on AI skills, but other companies I'm interviewing with are more sophisticated in their use of AI and thoughts on it, so I've had to tip my hand more to give practical examples. The best companies want to dig into those examples as ways to evaluate my thinking and use of AI.

This presents two challenges:

  1. I don't want to share everything because if they know about it, I can't gate-keep it
  2. Sometime it edges into them hunting for new ideas etc. leaves you feeling uneasy

How have people handled this?

Advice on shifting from store bought AP flour to fresh milled?

I recently picked up some fresh milled AP flour and tried my tried and true recipe, but the loaf collapsed on baking, tasted fine, but was a bit too dense.

I tried again, but reduced my yeast from 1.5 tsp to 1 tsp, it worked better but it was still denser and the very end slightly collapsed.

I typically use king Arthur AP flour in my Cuisinart CBK-110NAS

My basic white loaf recipe is

225g lukewarm water
75g lukewarm milk
43g butter
450g AP Flour
35g granulated sugar
9g table salt
4g instant yeast

New System To Always Have Batteries Fully Charged

In recent months I've had a few times where I needed some battery that I don't use often that when I went to go to use it was dead or low charge. In normal times that's just inconvenient, but during an event that could spell disaster or cost dearly.

I wanted to share what I came up with because I know I can't be the only one.

I've tried to come up with a system to handle this while still maintaining battery health, which is tricky because most timers are daily timers. Smart timers could possibly work, but I wanted something a little more "dumb" and smart timers typically do days of the week, so I could only do every 7 days which would not be great for battery health.

That's when I found this gizmo: the "Charge-O-Matic" which is designed for this exact use case and while a little expensive ($39) it was worth it to not have to deal with the hassle again. Basically you set the number of days between charges and then how long to power the charger. In the photo I have it charge for 6 hours every 30 days, it repeats indefinitely.

The next challenge was I hate to have batteries charging when I'm not home in case something goes wrong. I use good quality chargers and cables, but after a some thinking I realized an ammo can would be thick enough metal that if it were to catch fire, it would greatly mitigate the fire risk.

I leave the lid open but still latched so if there is any expansion of gases it would burp, but not open all the way. $6 at Northern Tool and I had a box that held all my batteries. Is it fool proof, no, but the simple step I figured would mitigate the risks.

What has been people's experience with Superlink items? [Gateway, Environmental Sensor, Relay, Motion Sensor, etc]

I have been eyeing the Superlink stuff for my home setup and have hesitated on pulling the trigger because I haven't really seen any people using it or any new videos beyond the announcement/launch coverage.

I specifically want it for water leak detection around my house, using the relay for opening my garage door, and then motion/glass break sensors for when I'm away.

Has anyone been using it? How do you like it? Would you buy again if you had to do it over again?

Specific Questions:

  • Any issues with using environmental sensors for leak detection?
  • Does the alarm allow for geofencing off your phone?
  • How well does the relay work practically speaking day to day for garage door opener?
  • Has your glass break sensor had false positives?
  • Could I set motion to ignore my robot vacuum?

Built A Mini Storage Rack With Lowe's Mini Totes & Balsa Wood - Sharpie For Scale

I had picked up some of these mini totes from Lowe's a while back, not sure what I was going to do with them. But I kept seeing people build these racks for the full size versions, so I made this from balsa wood.

Its now on my desk to store odds and ends. Never really worked with balsa wood before, but I found these pieces that were the right scale as if they were 2x4s to match the mini tote's scale. Assembled with CA glue and the painted flat black.

I'm was surprised how well it came out as it was tricky to keep all the wood aligned without gluing my fingers together.

Didn't have a banana on hand, so sharpie for scale.

Lowes Mini Tote Storage Rack For My Desk

I found some balsa wood on amazon that was almost perfect scale for these as 2x4s which people make storage racks for the full size ones .

Some CA glue and spray paint and I think it came out really well. Added a sharpie for scale.
