All new gear: How to help reduce equipment smell?

I know the smell can't be avoided.

But I just bought all new stuff after a 20-year break from hockey, and I'm curious how to keep the smell at bay as well as possible.

(I live in a small studio apartment, so I don't have anywhere to store my stuff other than in my apt.)

Any tips?

Thrift store find: French chore coat from Le Laboureur

Found this used chore coat for $30. Few minor stains but already on its way to being worn in.

I love the more subdued color than the traditional bright blue.

Is there a way to “distress” this 70s-era trucker jacket so the giant stain/discoloration becomes less noticeable?

I picked up this late 70s/early 80s trucker jacket from a thrift store but it has a large discoloration on the arm and chest.

I know I can’t hide it completely but I was wondering about sun bleaching it so the stain becomes less noticeable.

Does anyone have any information about this hat?

I picked this hat up at a thrift store the other day.

It appears to have a very subtle tartan pattern to it (the pattern is hard to see, depending on the light), but the color looks nearly solid.

I can’t quite tell if it’s wool or cotton, but there is a bit of fuzz to it, which makes me believe it has some wool in it.

[Serious] Assuming you were single, what would you do if you were given $250k to spend in a year but you couldn't save anything or buy any kind of assets (property, stocks, etc.)?

Is it dumb to liquidate my entire brokerage to buy an apartment outright?

I'm looking at a $990k apartment in NYC, and I have about $1.2M in a taxable brokerage account.

The catch is that I'd have to pay cash.

So after taxes, my entire brokerage would be essentially wiped out if I did this.

I also currently have about $130k in cash (in a HYSA) and about $600k in my 401k.

I make $ 140k/year and have no debt, but the apartment does have a $ 1,500/month maintenance fee (which includes property taxes).

EDIT: I'm 42 and single.

How to approach life as a 45-year-old with a NW of $2.5M?

I'm rounding the corner of being 45-years-old, and I should be knocking on the door of a $2.5M net worth by the time I hit 45.

My rough numbers would be:

  • $1,500,000 in taxable brokerage (most in SP500)

  • $900,000 in pre-tax 401k/IRA (most in SP500)

  • $120,000 in cash

I currently spend about $80k-$85k/yr on living expenses (rent, food, entertainment, travel, etc). I'm single and have no children, but I live in a very HCOL city.

My current salary is $140k/year, but I'm toying with the idea of a career change at 45 (or maybe going freelance). In short, I might have a lower income in the near future.

But the thought of drastically scaling back my income in my peak earning years is pretty scary.

So I'm looking for an outside perspective to help me see any blind spots I'm undoubtedly missing.

What’s the best skate I can build for $600 (using new gear)?

If I was interested in doing an ice hockey boot to roller hockey conversion, what’s the best pair of skates I could build for around $600?

And let’s assume I’m using all new parts.

Best bang for your buck roller hockey stakes for around $400?

I'm looking to get back into roller hockey after a 20-year hiatus (I'm 41 and haven't put on a pair of skates since I was about 20).

I'd like to keep the price to around $400. I wore Bauer skates back in the day, but I'm sure things have changed a lot in the last 20 years.

Very annoyingly, I live in NYC, where there are zero inline skate shops. Therefore, I'll either have to buy online or commute 1.5h to a Pure Hockey location.

The calculator says I'll have $8.4M in 20 years or $9.5M if I contribute $2k/month... so why keep saving?

Is being able to enjoy an extra $2k/month now worth having an extra $1M in 20 years when I'm 62?

EDIT: I just hit $2M at 42 years old, if that helps inform the discussion.

I have about five pairs of jeans and pants that I need hammed and I’d like to not spend a bunch of money getting them done. Any recommendations in the area?
