Natural Tarnish Experiment

Just got back from seeing some family at the beach for a week. I stripped these two street brass Zippos and left them at the house stowed up under the deck.

I saw the tarnish on the brass doorknob on this closet outside and I got curious: how long would it take a Zippo to do that?

Poolside Pokémon

Third playthrough ever on my childhood Pokémon Silver out in the OBX. All original hardware GBC bought by my parents probably around 2000-2001. I also have my GBA with me that I got off a coworker a few months ago. On my second playthrough of Golden Sun :)

Clear Coat Removal

Gonna take off this clear coat for an experiment. I don't have acetone but I DO have 91% isopropyl. I could run out and get some acetone but I was curious if anyone has used iso to strip the coat. I briefly searched posts but couldn't find this info.

Also, I'm heading to the beach next week to visit some family. I noticed their brass doorknobs outside were getting that blue tarnish so I'm gonna hang this empty Zippo case somewhere out of sight for a while to see what kind of tarnish develops.

1960s Barcroft Table Lighter

Just picked up this Barcroft! It's now my second Zippo table lighter (also a Barcroft). u/MillionSuns spotted this and I had to have it. For my purposes, nevermind the apostrophe.

Assuming the insert is the one that came with the lighter, this 4th model Barcroft can be dated to roughly 1963-1967. The Barcrofts of this type were made from about 1954 to 1979.

The felt is in great shape as well along with the fuel reserve wick and cork. It came with some third party wick so I replaced it with a vintage Zippo wick I had after I cleaned up the insert. Also, LOOK at that flint follower! Remember to replace your flints, kids.

Nerd stuff:

You should notice something off about the insert if you have a keen eye. It's a '63-'67 insert with a humped cam spring. I remember speaking with u/nechronius a while back about this. He noticed these newer inserts with humped cams in Barcrofts (although I forget the date range). My other Barcroft is from the 1970s and has the thick cam of the era. For the unfamiliar, the last pic is of the humped, flat, and then thick cams that have been used in inserts for comparison. So if you ever find a Zippo with one of these humped cam inserts that isn't right for the time, chances are it may have originally been put into a Barcroft (assuming it wasn't put on after by a crafty previous owner). Cool little detail on the production history.

I also noticed a difference in the hinge barrels of my two Barcrofts. At some point, it looks like they beefed them up.

New 2025

I was almost too late! I realized I didn't have a '25 so I went to Wal Mart and found this December street brass. It was the last one left in front of a new batch that was February '26.

Hinge is tight (as the pics show) and it's hefty-feeling. My '24 brushed chrome feels flimsy and the insert has marks on it. Goes to show you they're all different!

Viscount Display Tucked Away

Hey guys! I was out at a claustrophobic little burger/dog joint in my town recently and this place is packed to the gills with Americana trinkets. I spotted this way up high behind a lot of stuff. Don't know much outside of Zippo Land but I thought you guys would enjoy.

USB-C Female to 3.5mm Male Adapter

Hey everyone! I recently got my old Gameboy running and I don't wanna go buy a new set of headphones. My headphones are USB-C and the Gameboy takes 3.5mm.

I have tried about 3 or 4 USB-C to 3.5mm adapters on Amazon, none of which work. I've looked around the internet and have found several people having similar issues over the years but dealing with totally different products (and none of them have had their problems resolved).

I guess I'll just keep buying and returning things to Amazon but this is getting frustrating. What's going on? Why don't any adapters work for me?
