Imported from the US. It’s good… But…
This finally arrived from the US. It is good, but there are things about it that are a bit disappointing.
The biggest problem is the shoddy Lionsgate packaging with stacked discs. Why Lionsgate?? How many cents did you save? I’d have paid more for proper packing! Also mildly infuriating is the inability to determine which disc is which, having to infer the order by reading the sentence “I’m gonna kill Bill” in the right order.
Getting onto the actual film, I noticed there are a few parts which look shaky, juddery, and generally not smooth - some are deliberate stylistic choices I guess (like slomo moments - but even so, why was the frame rate not high enough to make a smooth slow motion shot?) but others just look unintentional and bad. It’s not all the way through, but it’s noticeable in the parts where it happens.
I suspect the judder could have been corrected had the film been remastered from the original film, but I believe this is just a 4k upscale from the 2k digital intermediate, as with previous Kill Bill Vol 1 and Vol 2 4k releases. Please correct me if I’m wrong on that. Again Lionsgate cheaped out rather than doing the job properly. Maybe someday a boutique label such as Arrow might do the job Lionsgate should have done.
If it’s just an upscale from 2k, I think what I would have preferred would be a straight 2k presentation, but on a 4k disc; that way we could have had the full film on one disc. That would have been great!
Anyway, I’m still glad I have it and glad I’ve seen it. It is better than the separate volumes and definitely the version to watch, especially with the uncut / unrated content reintegrated. I just think Lionsgate could have done it better.
One final note: the included “lost chapter” Yuki’s Revenge: skip it, it’s awful.
