Ideas for improving my garden doorstep

Ideas for improving my garden doorstep

This is my current back doorstep, two old paving slabs (one cracked). I want to replace it but what with the inspection cover halfway across, I’m not sure the best way forwards.

Anyone have any ideas, or similar experience?

Thanks in advance!

Viewing a house simply for renovation/decoration inspiration

I bought my first house last year, accepting the decor needed sprucing up. As I’m sure many have experienced, it’s quickly turned into realising the place needs a reno more than anything else.

A house a few roads over has just gone up for sale. It’s almost an exact carbon copy of mine, with an ever so slightly larger ground extension and slightly deeper bay windows to the front, but the room sizes, and loft conversion, are pretty close to mine

My query is, has anyone every gone to do a full viewing of a house simply for inspiration/help to visualise an end goal for your own property, or would something like that be weird/a bit too far. Obviously my main con to doing this is taking up a viewing slot for actual interested parties in the property.

Just removed my first bit of structural wallpaper

From a quick bit of googling this may have been exacerbated by the radiator?

Do these next steps look right :

• break off all blown plaster
• watered down PVA over exposed areas
•toupret filler (deep fill?)
•sand
•fill again
•sand again

TIA

Clubcard price on app cheaper than in store

Fancied pizza tonight, saw Tesco had my fav on clubcard price £1 cheaper than Waitrose had them

Got to the store (an Extra) and find them priced at £5. What gives?!

Grey vs pink plaster

Uk, 1930’s house.

I’m currently stripping off wallpaper in my hallway, on an internal wall, and noted that the majority of it is grey in colour. I always had it in my head that plaster was pink, so unsure what I’m dealing with here?

I also uncovered a section that has crossed in it and some form of material over the top like someone tried to patch a large section?

Ultimately I’m looking to paint the bare walls, so really just trying to determine if the walls would just need a mist coat or if they’d benefit from a skim before painting

Keep sanding brush strokes or cut my losses and strip wallpaper

I’m prepping my walls for paint, and trying to smooth down the horrid brushstrokes that have been left by whoever previously decorated.

As you can see, my walls are not flat in the slightest, and as I’ve been sanding I’ve gone through multiple paint layers, and I think in some places, through the paper too.

At this point, should I just save myself a lot of time/noise etc and just strip the paper off? From multiple tappings of the wall I strongly suspect there’s some blown plaster behind it all, but at this point I think it’s going to be quicker to deal with that than keep going with the sander

Perished window gaskets? More like petrified!

Every gasket is extremely brittle, and practically falls off with any slight pressure added to it.

I managed to extract a seal on the opening part of a window but the whole process took about 90 minutes of slicing with a craft knife and then trying to pull the chunks out. Replacement gasket took 5 minutes to fit!

Anyone else gone through this horror? What helped in getting the old gasket out, or am I just going to have to lump it?

In today’s episode of “oh fun” I’ve found the power line to our garage was simply pushed to the side and just left by the original installers

Looking for alternatives to VWRP

I’ve decided to follow the advice of investing overpayments for my mortgage rather than overpaying each month.

Now maybe I’m being lazy, but I don’t really fancy going through setting up yet another account on another platform to keep my overpayment deposits separate from my existing S&S ISA’s. Currently I have Monzo (personal invested funds) and T212 (joint savings invested funds).

I do prefer T212 over Monzo due to the former being live and, to me, having more options. As I already have my joint savings funds in VWRP, what would the next best alternate be?

Or should I just deal with half an hour of setting up a new account so I can add my overpayment deposits to VWRP still?

Your unwanted weekend discoveries

Anyone made any unwanted discoveries so far this weekend?

I was taking an amble down the alley between the roads where I live and noticed the side of our loft conversion looked a bit different from the other.

Got out the trusty selfie stick when I was back in and discovered the whole fascia board in the side has fallen down at some point in the past, before we bought the place. Survey didn’t pick it up either which is frustrating. So now hunting down a roofer to get it fixed..

Loft conversion hit 40c

Bought our house last November and experiencing our first heatwave here

Loft conversion (carried out around ‘96) has hit 40celcius today. Now it is a south west facing garden so always going to get the worst of the heat, but is there anything I can do, aside from curtains, to help prevent it turning into an actual oven?

And yes, the room is a frozen tundra in winter….

Maybe not the usual kind of post but here goes

Our shower tray overflowed today, due to the drain getting blocked up (usual suspects of hair and soap). I’ve been able to clear the drain and everything is flowing again, and no leaks detected.

When the shower overflowed, it flooded the entire bathroom floor (1st floor) and a small part of the carpet on the landing. Due to some cracked floor tiles in the bathroom, a substantial amount of water also made it down into the kitchen, flowing behind the wall mounted cabinets and flooding the worktop and parts of the floor (tiled).

All the water was mopped up in both kitchen and bathroom, and I’ve popped the dehumidifier into the bathroom. Is there anything else I can /should do right now aside from putting a hole in the kitchen ceiling to improve drying in the floor space?
