My home office in Hawaii

I was working at a coworking space. most of my time, but recently they announced they’re shutting down the location. Today is actually the last day. I bought the desk from them for $250, but then ended up getting all these other items I needed, including monitors and monitor stand and monitor arm and MacBook stand. Overall, I’m really happy with my setup. Just thought I’d share.

My living room office

Recently bought this desk for my co-working space that is closing down. $250 for the desk. Then I realize I also need monitors and a monitor stand, as well as a. Anyway, my $250 desk easily turn into a $800 project, which took me a couple of weeks to assemble as it is hard to get things here in Hawaii

Coming from a Epomaker Galaxy 100 Lite - the EVO75 didn’t blow me away

Full disclosure: I've only been into mechanical keyboards for about six months, so take this with a grain of salt.

My entry point was a pair of Epomaker Galaxy 100 Lites - bought the second one as a placeholder while waiting on this Evo. In that time I've done the usual new-hobbyist spiral: switch tester, sample packs, tape mods, spring swaps, keycap experiments. Landed on Cherry double-shot PBT for caps, and I gravitate toward Retro Sakuras, BSUN Taro/Sweet Potato, and occasionally Durock Ice Kings. So I'm not completely flying blind here.

Unpacked the Evo a couple nights ago and have been daily driving it since. Honest reaction: I don't get the hype. It doesn't feel meaningfully better than my Epomaker - even stock, with Marble White Fekers. Yes, it's heavier, the aluminum looks great, and the build quality is obviously there. But is that worth $169 vs. the $83 I paid for the Epomaker? I genuinely can't justify it.

I'll keep it - no regrets on that. But if you're on the fence and already have a solid budget board you've modded to your taste, don't expect a revelation.

EVO75 first impressions - not impressed

Sent out over 80 incites and only one person responded

Hello, I have been using Upwork for nearly a decade and use the same job template when hiring VAs for customer support and sales work. I have spent over $16K with Upwork during this time and have never had an issue attracting VAs from abroad. However, this time around, and for the first time using it in six months, I sent out 80+ invites and only got one response. What is going on with Upwork?

Edit: No, I am not offering too low. I was offering the same pay six months ago and got many applications.

This is a customer service position paying $10-$12 an hour.

My company feedback is a 4.95 rating with 22 reviews.

Yeah, I only spent $16K across 7.5 years because I usually hire VAs for permanent positions outside of Upwork. I currently have three VAs who are very happy, and two of them came to me from Upwork and have been here for years.

I look at the history of freelancers and their asking pay. It is always between $6-$12 for this position. I hire people in the Philippines and Central America.

I came here to post about the fact that it seems like Upwork is having an issue because I have never seen anything like it, but holy shit, I have never met such a bitter subreddit before, with so many smartasses. Everyone here thinks they are comedians, is clearly incapable of reading, jumps to conclusions, and instead of being productive, jumps on you like a group of piranhas criticizing my spelling error and assuming I underpay. Keep being miserable.

Visited Manchester for the first time — a lifelong dream fulfilled. Thank you for the hospitality

I’m from the US and split my time between Honolulu, Hawaii and Dallas, Texas (where I run a business). Recently, I had to travel to France for some difficult personal news and brought my girlfriend along for support. It was also her first time in Europe. After handling things in Paris, we took the train to London with one goal in mind: get to Manchester and watch United vs. Liverpool at Old Trafford.

I’ve been a Man United supporter since 1994. I grew up abroad, outside the US, playing football, and Old Trafford has been a pilgrimage I’ve dreamed about for 32 years. I finally made it happen, and it did not disappoint.

We stayed three nights at the Wilde Aparthotels and walked the city end to end. A few things that genuinely surprised me:

For being the UK’s second-biggest city, Manchester felt remarkably homely. You can walk everywhere. The architecture is stunning there’s this incredible mix of Victorian industrial buildings and modern glass that just works. The city was clean, people were friendly, and there were coffee shops and pubs on every corner.

One area we stumbled into really stood out. It was whimsical. It has a canal-side neighborhood with houseboats, new-build apartments, and little coffee shops lining the water. I think it was Castlefield (or possibly New Islington/Ancoats along the Ashton Canal). If anyone can confirm, I’d appreciate it we just wandered in and loved the vibe.

The tram system is fantastic. Easy to figure out, gets you everywhere, and for a city this size it was surprisingly quiet and peaceful to just walk around.

My girlfriend and I both left saying the same thing: we genuinely loved Manchester and can’t wait to come back next year. However, she did love Paris more. Go figure.

Thanks for the hospitality, Manchester. You’ve got a fan for life on and off the pitch. Hopefully I can comeback again this year or next. 🔴

Business closures - is this normal?

I’ve noticed a lot more business closures around Honolulu lately. It feels like places are shutting down left and right. Two coworking spaces, The Hub and BoxJelly, are both closing at the end of June, and Waikīkī seems to have more vacant storefronts than I remember seeing in 2023-2024.

I’ve only lived on Oʻahu for about three years, so I’m curious: is this a normal cycle here, or does it feel different than usual to longtime residents?

Impulse buy - I simply couldn’t pass this up (upgraded from M1 Pro)

I live in Hawaii but was in Dallas recently, and I’d been reading that Micro Center sometimes has great open-box deals. I stopped by the store and found this open-box for $2,267.

It’s the new M5 Pro (18-core chip) with 48GB RAM and so it should be a pretty major jump from my 2021 M1 Pro.

I had a MacBook Pro M1 Pro for the last 4.5 years and it served me extremely well running my small businesses. Honestly, it’s still running strong. The only time I really started noticing limitations was after getting heavily into running and experimenting with LLMs. Even though I mostly run Claude through a VPS and not running LLMs due to heavy resource use, the workload. Honestly, I dont think I need to upgrade for my needs 95% of the time my M1 Pro is doing what I need it to do. Im mostly using SaaS and 15 tabs open at a time with Claude running via CLI.
