Some Kadotas and Black Missions in the last few days

None of the other humans at my place appreciate figs, but the pesky 🐿️ and 🐦 have been taking bites out of the best looking figs before I can claim them for myself! The nerve!

Most of the kadota has a ways to go yet, but these first ones at the base have been ginormous jammy juice bags this year. BM is much smaller tree and near the end of fruit. The last few days have been very hot, and making those lovely wrinkly figs that start drying on the tree. I think I ate 9 of them earlier, mmmm 🤤

Loco Moco

Loco Moco for dinner last night!

Brown gravy: Pan fry frozen hamburger patties with your favorite house seasoning, remove from pan and set aside. Remove most of the grease from pan (optional: and add minced onion, until cooked) and add a wodge of butter + equal volume of flour (about 2-3tbsp each), stir and cook until flour is browned; add splash dark soy sauce, worschester sauce, some paste bouillon, and a small squirt of ketchup; whisk in about 2-3c water, very slowly at first to help break up any flour clumps so it’s smooth; cook and reduce or add liquid, to desired viscosity; add cooked patties and any drippings back into the brown gravy to warm back up. Serve over white rice, with a runny egg and side dishes 🍽️

3-eggs in my SPAM hash burrito

Wife got some 14” tortillas at the store, so naturally I wanted to roll up a fatty breakfast burrito. SPAM potato hash, cheddar cheese, sour cream, salsa, and 3 eggs - devoured 😜

Window stopped working after 24yrs? Check the door wiring harness!

Mostly just an FYI post for the owners with older Cruisers starting to show their age. Mines a 2002 and had a rear window that recently stopped working. Took things apart to investigate and found broken wires inside the rubber boot section between door and pillar. Spliced and soldered and its working again! This is the left rear door my kids have been abusing for years throwing it open and slamming it shut.

Prune the laterals?

Novice to growing berries, but want to set myself up for success next year. I've acquired several varieties in the last year: Blackberries - Navaho, Apache, Big Daddy, Black Satin, Baby Cakes; Raspberries: Brandywine, English, Fall Gold, and Raspberry Short Cake. I'm in Zone 9b California. Most were put into pots for 1st year, minimum size 5gal, with future plans to divide and plant in 25gal halved poly barrels or in the ground.

On the ones that grew strong enough, I topped primocanes around 4ft, but now have laterals exceeding 4ft. Wondering if I should be pruning the laterals shorter, to fork again? Or should I leave them be for the rest of season? I saw that some people leave them until dormancy and prune short to 1-3 buds (to not overproduce berries?), or some people tip-propagate the laterals in pots and then cut the lateral back after it's rooted. Didn't see much reference to pruning the laterals a 2nd time, which is why I'm asking.

For the people who grow theirs into big arches with the fruit dangling down below for easy picking - do you not tip/prune the primocane and just arch the whole thing over? Do they form long laterals when you do this, or do they stay compact and only lengthen in the spring for bearing fruit?

Got pics or a good video to reference?

Thanks!

SPAM Musubi Piñata

Made a SPAM Musubi birthday piñata 🪅

Materials: Cardboard, hot glue, butcher paper, cooked flour slurry, a paint stirring stick, metal wire, and acrylic paint

Didn’t have any packing peanuts for the rice, but it came out pretty great for a last minute 2-evening project after the kids were asleep. Didn’t put in any spam cans trying to save weight (was like 30lbs), but have since discovered that spam single packs exist - next time for sure!

Quick 4-egg burrito

4 homegrown eggs quick scrambled in the pan with cheddar cheese, stovetop flamed tortilla, picante style salsa, sour cream and taco sauce. Takes less than 5-min to make and hits that spot every time.

Olallie berry hand pies

Had to do something with all the olallie berries I’ve been picking lately, so decided to make some hand pies. Filling is fresh Olallie berries, few big spoons of sugar, pinch salt, and a sprinkle of corn starch. Crust is Trader Joe’s pie crust, cut with a to-go container. Farm fresh egg wash with some sugar on top. 375 for about 25min. Easy as pie 🥧

Olallieberry time!

Olallieberries starting to get ripe, so I picked a bunch (left side); still LOTS more to go, but sooo many thorns. Also picked some wild blackberries (right), a zucchini, and snacked on one of the last SpiceZee nectaplums

Dad’s stash of old Makita

Celebrating the 4th back at the house I grew up in, and was looking through my dad’s shop for a part to fix something, when I came across a bucket of my dad’s old cordless Makita. He was a kitchen/bath remodeler for 30yrs and these were from way back. Brought up some great memories from back when I was a kid helping him install kitchens

Vodka-Cranberry piñata

Made a quick piñata for a friend’s 50th birthday party. Their drink of choice has been a vodka cranberry, so naturally that’s what I made them.

Materials: Cardboard, hot glue, metal wire, drawing paper, butcher paper, cellophane, cooked flour slurry, latex and acrylic paint.

Filled with mostly red items: mini vodka bottles, mini hot sauce and bbq sauces, KitKat bars, Doritos, Cheese-It’s, Pringles, raisins, freeze dried strawberries, popcorn, to-go breakfast cereals, and Lotto tickets.

We reversed our normal hitting order of youngest to oldest after the birthday person, and went from oldest to youngest, which was pretty fun.

Splash Pluots

Splash Pluots 2026. One of my favorites in the orchard; super sweet with a nice texture, they’re almost like 2” cherries, and this tree gets loaded with them every year.

Unfortunately lost twice this volume to the birds and squirrels already, but they allowed some big ones to get to that perfect stage of ripeness, so I picked a bunch to share with family friends🤘

A “Dad’s on his own for dinner” scramble

Came home and everyone was gone, so I made a dinner scramble: leftover SPAM found in the fridge that wasn’t there this morning, leftover French fries and onion rings my kids didn’t eat a day ago, part of a tomato I found on a cutting board amongst evidence of sandwich making, some spinach, extra sharp cheddar, and four freshly laid eggs, toast, and a Kirkland bee. Eating while watching Bojack Horseman and then playing some Doom 3

Thermador DWHD44EM/53 dishwasher no longer cleaning well

Trying to figure out the issue with Thermador DWHD44EM/53 dishwasher.

Used to clean just fine but having issues with it not fully cleaning dishes. I have a feeling the cause was a glass jar with label got put inside. Been trying to resolve for weeks. There is a white greasy film on dishes, especially anything plastic. Also the interior walls are noticeably not clean like they used to be. Possibly taking longer to complete cycle (always took a long time)

The drain pump and grinder seem to be functioning, you can hear them working, no water or foods left inside. All jets seem to be functioning. Soap has been changed, plenty of rinse additive. Hot water ran before starting.

Any ideas what to do next or parts to replace? Only thing I can think of is maybe there’s a bad sensor inside somewhere?

Anyone have a source for sprouted smooth-skin, chayote seedlings in Sacramento area? Open to buying or a trade/barter.

I see a few locals selling the spined versions, and I'll probably get some of those too - but I'm seeking a smooth-skin variety if possible, since that's what my dad used to grow when I was a kid. Seeing some available in Bay Area, but driving an hour for just a $3 plant doesn't make sense, when someone might have them locally (or maybe you go to Bay regularly and want to get some for both of us?)

I did post about these last year and got some through Marketplace, but not seeing any smooth ones this year. The ones last year got eaten by voles before they could produce anything
