A Warning with Peace and Love
I just remembered this existed so I thought I'd share it.

Edit: Don't worry, I won't cut on it lol 😁 /edit
Hi folks,
I have an old zildjian 10" splash. I love the sound, but it's old enough that the hole is too small for most modern cymbal stands.
As I said in the title, this was my grandfather's cymbal. He didn't have a lot of money, so he would have bought old, used cymbals in the early 20's when he started playing. He stopped when he went to college in the late 30's. He told his mom to sell the drums because he was enlisting for WWII, and this is the only piece she didn't sell.
What would you do with this cymbal if it were yours? I've used it a few times when I find a cymbal protector that it would fit on, but I've carried in my cymbal bag for the last 5 or 6 years just in case I find a chance to use it. I'm tempted to open up the hole with a dremmel, but I don't want to destroy something valuable.
Hi folks,
I didn't find much about this on here that wasn't a couple years old, figured I would ask new instead of resurrecting an old thread. I've never had shoes before that were worth taking to a cobbler, but I finally do now.
I had a combination leather/rubber heel on these Chelseas and the brass nail heads started being really slippery on tile. I brought them out to the nearest cobbler (about a 45 minute drive) and asked for rubber top lifts. The pieces he installed were a little bit taller than what he took off so now my shoes rock on the front of the heel and I have more pressure on my arch.
Is this reasonable to bring back to him or am I being too picky?
A little more background: I brought them out on a Friday and forgot that I needed them on Sunday until I was already there, so he put on his bench first thing Saturday (not special hours, just put me first). Then I couldn't make it back out while he was still open Saturday, but he works attached to his house, so he told me just come on our whenever. I gave him 25% more as a gift to thank him for taking special care of me. He also burnished up a scuff I pointed out for nothing.
I was thinking of calling him Monday and saying it feels like I'm rocking on the front of the heels, too much pressure on arch, and asking if he could do something about that. I'm willing to pay more to have it right rather than spending the last amount I can get away with.
I'm probably using the wrong words here... About 15 years ago, I stumbled upon bedtimetunes.trash-can.net. It's long defunct now (although a playlist does exist on Spotify), but I discover a song called Edges of Illusion by John Surman. I really liked the moody, mysterious world it put me in but I could never find anything else that did that, even on the album that song was from. It's like a sequencer going through a synthesizer with weird clarinet vibing in the background.
Anyways, I found a song called Somewhere I have Never Traveled by Chords of Orion the other day, and some of it is pretty close to the same feeling, so I felt inspired to look some more. What do you have?
Hello there,
I got these pants from the historical emporium (I think this is their Foster pant) a few months ago and I find they are just tight enough that the French fly doesn't keep them flat in front. This material claims to be 100% cotton and burns like it.
It looks like there's enough material to let them out some except the waistband (if I can call it that) seems to just have enough material at the back seam to make the stitches; I can feel about 7/16" of material on both sides of the seam.
I measured (and a friend measured me) at 42", but the 42 I got had more than enough room for my hand inside the waist band. I exchanged them for this size 40.
I also got another pair at 42; how hard would it be to take them in?
Hello there,
I have a pair of Carmina Shoemaker Chelseas with leather soles and heel stack. This is my first pair of leather soles, so I'm unsure what to expect... Yes, they were like ice the first time I tried walking on carpet, but they are now grippy enough that I found myself running down a carpeted ramp while loading in in the rain.
Anyways, the question I wanted to ask is about the brass nails in my heel stack. It seems like the leather has compressed and the nail heads are contacting first. I can't visually see them standing proud of the heel, but most of them are shiny. Most of the time this doesn't make any difference, but (especially on tile floors), I find I have no grip pushing sideways or sidestepping. I'm leaving little black lines wherever I slip. Walking forwards is totally fine.
Is this just a normal part of leather heels or is there something wrong with these? Or am I abusing them?
... What would a good solution be to get a grip on tile? Can I just set the nails a little further in?
I was just wandering around random playlists and stumbled upon this song. It sent me to the album and by the time I came around to it the second time, I started thinking it was kind of Beatle-y. That reminded me of various conversations I have seen about what music sounds like the Beatles but isn't.
Curious how you folks feel about it...
I just had a first tonight...
I never really get around to playing at home. I practice, I learn music, I play out. But tonight I got home and the moment struck—I'm going to play drums tonight.
So I got my phone hooked up, turned on an old playlist, and started having a grand old time. I had to stop to get a rag and dust off everything because it was all kicking into the air lol.
Anyways, about 30 or 40 minutes in, I feel this random zing in my leg, right where it meets the seat. I figured maybe it grabbed a wild hair or a little skin got pinched. I readjusted and kept going, then suddenly another. Well... Long story medium, I guess some spider that had made my high hats it's home was none too happy that I was wrecking said home, made it's way up my pants, and bit me when it got pinched.
Have you ever had an experience like that? Have you ever encountered any weird hazards drumming that the rest of us might not have?
Hello there,
I have been hearing this sound in northwestern IL near the Mississippi river after dark the last couple weeks and it doesn't seem like anything I've noticed in the last 35 years. Curiosity has gotten the better of me, so recorded this clip last night and here I am now. I live next to a small ravine, but there is enough nature that I regularly see deer in my back yard. It recently went from being decently hot to rather cool and rainy if that helps at all.
Sorry in advance about the quality, I had to drive everything pretty hard to get a decent level out of it, so there is a pretty high noise floor and you can hear my hand shifting around on the recorder (I swear I kept perfectly still 🙄). The sound is most prominent towards the end of the recording.
I'll add a link to the mp3 with the noise cleaned up in the comments; I'm not sure if it's actually any clearer.
Or double bass, or contra bass, or stand-up bass. Whatever you call it, I had only touched one once about 15 years ago for maybe 10 minutes. And you know what? It wasn't too bad at all!
So I'm a drummer but I casually studied bass in music school, I don't have a lot of proficiency but everyone I play with tells me I play tastefully. Anyways, I joined a string band a couple weeks ago and he had me playing acoustic bass guitar for the first couple shows, but he offered to let me try his bass at practice last night.
Once I figured out how to pluck it, I couldn't put it down. I thought I was going to get some nasty blisters, but I played about a set and merely had a little wear on my index finger.
Man, that was such a blast I almost don't want to play any other bass
Hello there,
Some of you folks have probably seen me posting this picture around here...
Straight to the point, I'm looking for any info or ideas about preventative maintenace for the extension/retraction cam.
I've seen plenty about work on the front, but not much really about getting into the back end of it. I've had a few moments over the years thinking this was dead because the cam mechanism got jammed up, but I've always been able to get it working again by fiddling around with it. It's been starting to feel kind of iffy the past few months, and it's starting to make me nervous. Kind of crunchy, kind of sticky, not very happy in general.
I saw someone say they cleaned it with a compressed can of air. I have some lock lube at home that graphite suspended in a fluid that flashes off (to avoid attracting dust). I also saw someone here talking about how to put it back together, but I'm not sure I follow, nor am I confident in getting it apart.
I'm a mechanically-minded person, I can run machine tools and I work on my classic VWs myself besides designing machines on a daily basis for a living... But in ten years of poking at this, I haven't been able to figure out how to get it apart.
Pics for clicks ;P
I made this watch strap for myself about a year and a half ago using roccado shell from buckleguy. It used to be like the green marbled and raw color, almost visible on the bottom of the strap.
Anyway, the question I came here to ask: I was playing a show outside last weekend (bass guitar) and it was pretty warm, but not terribly humid. I brought a towel with me to wipe my head, but I didn't end up needing it...
So, halfway through the set, I noticed beads of moisture all over the palm side of the watch strap. Didn't have time to look at the other side.
I wiped it off on my pants leg and noticed a little brown cone with it.
An hour later, at the same event, but not playing this time, I again noticed sweat just on the wrist band, and I got a little brown on my fingers when I rubbed it off.
So I'm mostly just curious—This strap was just an experiment; it's not very nice and I'm not greatly attached to it...
But did the moisture weep out of the shell, did it wick through from my skin, or did it condense from the river? (oh yeah, we were playing next to the river)
And I'm really not sure how it's all going to go over.
I guess I'm not worried about retaliation. I think it was an honest mistake on the part of the accountant (writing minutes after the decimal point instead of decimal hours—can never get more than 35 minutes and will always be less than actual worked), and I told my boss and showed him the math, he told the VP and showed him the math, and everybody's glad I noticed so they can fix it.
But like, things are already pretty tight around here and it's probably been years. That's a lot of back pay to catch up on.
I guess it's good to find this stuff, that's what my boss tells me, but I'm always finding problems. Idk... I guess this is just the biggest one I've found. It just feels weighty.
Hello there,
I have a funny situation this Saturday and need to play a bass with intonation problems that tends to drift out of tune.
Is there a pedal I can grab from guitar center to lock me on pitch to get through this gig?
Otherwise, I guess it's just a tuner pedal and lots of checking between tunes
Hi folks, looks like quite a range of stuff you have going on over here. I tried digging through some searches, but I didn't come up with much decisive, so I thought I'd ask if there are some commonly recommended sources for good quality reproduction clothes.
I have joined an old-timey Americana band playing stand up bass. They don't necessarily go for a specific era, but they don't wear jeans or t-shirts. I'm attracted to like high-waisted cotton pants designed for suspenders, and like maybe a band collared shirt? It should be something tough enough that I can actually work in it, schlepping gear in and out of a venue.
I found this in my first Google search, but I've learned that the first result isn't always the best.
Oh hey, what about shoes? I have a pair of stitchdown PNW boots on a dressier last, do you think those would stand out too much?
Hey there, I tried searching around, but with a word like light, I get a lot of noise to filter through. And with modern search engines, I get a bunch of things that have nothing to do with what I searched for.
I'm a musician. I'll be driving my vw bus to a two day festival in playing, planning to camp in the bus instead of getting a hotel.
I'll need to charge my phone and run a laptop, but I'd also like a light for the evening.
I was looking at a 20Ah-ish Anker with a couple USB C and one USB A, but it doesn't have a light. I'm talking about just set it on the table like a lamp and plug in my laptop, etc.
Also going to Europe this fall and would like the peace of mind to know my family won't go dead while traveling.
Do you have any suggestions? Do you have an idea that I've missed?
Hello there. I'm looking for feedback on my post processing.
Having read the rules and the FAQ, I'm kind of surprised I didn't see something specifically addressing feedback requests; if there is a better place for this, please send me there.
I tried posting this in the daily questions thread and got nothing 🤷♂️
That being said, I did see that flair is only for portfolios, but I also can't post without flair.
Anyway, I am a couple weeks into learning how to use Darktable to develop my raw images. I am going on a trip to Europe in the fall and my camera phone is pretty low end, so I got a 10 year old Sony RX100 to have a chance at getting some photos that would really remind me of the trip. I'm trying to get my skills up to snuff before I go over, so I'm practicing lots of photography.
Back to the point, I have been shooting RAW+JPG and I would like another set of eyes to tell me if I'm going the right direction with my editing. Here is an Imgur link to the jpg my camera gave me as well as three different edits I did to the raw. It feels like I can't get a realistic pic that looks better than the camera jpg; it either gets too sterile or it turns into a cartoon. Would you folks let me know how I'm actually doing?
I am open to suggestions on composition or other technical aspects (although you probably don't have a large enough sample to offer much), but I am specifically interested in how I'm handling the post processing.
I'll put the pic in the comments so that every passerby doesn't have to look at my feet, but I've noticed lately that my instep is red and the ball of my foot on out to my toes is white. Am I causing damage? It's more pink and pale than straight up red and white, but there's a pretty clear line. I can basically always feel contact with my boots where it's pink.
So my feet didn't do that a year ago. Maybe 9 months ago or so, I got my Nicks x Parkhurst V3 in 8.5D and a few months after that I got my Whites MP in 8EE, sized by Baker's. I'm a 9 on the brannok, almost one size wide on the right, with a rather low instep and arch. Before that I was wearing Thursday Boots in 8.5D for 3-6 months, and before that I was wearing red wing safety sole sneakers.
I guess the only other piece of info I can give is I've been wearing Darn Tough medium hiking socks with the nicks and Minus33 hiking sock with the whites (they're a little thicker and it feels like I have a little more room in the whites).
