Need help with Journal Entry/Check Deposit Trouble

Need help with Journal Entry/Check Deposit Trouble

I’m looking for advice on handling trucking settlements in Wave.

My client gets settlements with gross – deductions = net, and only the net hits the bank feed. I create a journal entry that debits the deductions and the net, and credits the gross so the full settlement shows correctly.

The issue is: on the Profit & Loss for that day, Wave shows both the gross from the JE and the net from the imported deposit as uncategorized income — basically counting the net twice.

Wave doesn’t have a feature to tell the system that the imported deposit is the same money referenced in the JE. The “match” option only works for reconciliation, not for reporting. I even spoke with a Wave agent, but they confirmed there’s no built‑in way to link the two for P&L purposes.

Has anyone found a clean workflow in Wave to avoid double-counting the net when using a journal entry for trucking settlements? The net on Wave should be 6515.18 (ignore parking expense). My goal is to understand how to do this so I can apply that template for the other 100s of settlements. Thank You in advance!!

Advice needed for Trucking Settlements

I’m doing bookkeeping for a trucking client who owns their truck but is leased onto a carrier, and they’ve never kept books before. I’m looking for advice from anyone familiar with trucking settlement statements.

Their weekly settlements always follow the same pattern:

Gross pay – deductions = net check

The net amount is the only thing that actually hits their checking account, so that’s the only transaction Wave sees.

My question is:
What’s the cleanest way to get the gross income and all deductions into the books when the only real bank transaction is the net?

Should I be using a journal entry to add the gross and deductions?
If so, how would you structure that JE so everything ties out correctly and the net stays accurate?

Any guidance or examples from people who handle trucking clients would help a lot.

Update: The deposit shows up as uncategorized. The match wave option only works to reconcile. Reports still look like double income.

Free Bookkeeping for a Small business. Is this a good idea?

I started my own bookkeeping business last month. I’ve already picked up one client, and I’m working on getting another, but I’m having trouble promoting myself and building trust as a new service provider.

I had an idea, and I’m wondering if it’s smart or if I’m missing something:

I’m considering offering one month of free bookkeeping to one small business — preferably a business with a low number of transactions. I’d set up their software, clean up their books for the month, and get everything organized.

In exchange, I’d ask for:

  • An honest Google review
  • Permission to use them as a portfolio example
  • And if they like my work, maybe they’d consider continuing or referring me

To me, it feels like a win‑win: they get help, I get experience, social proof, and possibly a long‑term client. But I don’t want to accidentally undervalue myself or send the wrong message.

Is this a reasonable strategy?

My First Client Issues. What’s the Best Way Forward?

Thanks for all the advice!

As of now, I haven't been able to do much work with the client. I met with her onthe 2nd of July. We agreed on 600 for the clean-up. She paid half upfront. I gave her a price of $180 for the monthly bookkeeping. Told her the cleanup is a separate project from the monthly stuff.

During our long meeting, she didn't bring her bank info or any statements as asked. It was hard to know what I was getting myself into. Will definitely do better with my 2nd client. The following week after our meetup, she sent loads of random documents (trucking company) but no settlements. It's been hard to know what I'm looking for. After many follow-ups, now she wants to meet up to help her connect her bank, and I'm sure she has other questions. I don't know what to do. Our first meeting was 2 hours and not very productive in getting her set up.

I want to meet local clients once if they want for the initial setup, but after that it would be too much. I haven't replied to her text about meeting in person yet.

How would you handle this situation? Consider that she's my first and only client, as I just started this month. She and her husband run a trucking company and have never done their books. They wanted to do better this year to "save move-on taxes".

Edit: Thank you for the advice. All has been helpful. I will read future responses, as all advice right now is helpful.

New 2027 Bolt owner. Need J1772 adapter for library charging

I’m a new 2027 Chevy Bolt owner, and the library I go to only has J1772 chargers. Since the Bolt uses NACS, I need a J1772 adapter, and I’m looking at the GM J1772 AC Adapter | 86286534 | Chevrolet Accessories

I’m wondering:

  • Is the GM adapter the best choice, or are other brands just as good?
  • Is it okay to charge at J1772 stations regularly, or is that bad for the car long‑term?
  • Do new Bolt owners get any discounts on GM’s accessories site?
  • Also, my car keeps saying I should charge to 100% once a week. I thought up to 80% was the way to go.

Thanks for any advice.

First potential client call — need advice on cleanup pricing + what to cover at the meetup

I just got off the phone with my first potential client, and I’m excited but also trying to make sure I price things correctly and show up prepared.

She has 150-200 transactions, and I'm charging her 180. Told her my normal rate is 300, but I'm starting.

She also needs a cleanup from January through now, as her books haven’t been updated this year. I told her I’d get back to her with a cleanup price and that we could meet up so I can help her choose and set up her bookkeeping software (I gave her two options I work with).

I want to make sure I’m not undercharging for the cleanup. For trucking, there’s fuel, maintenance, tolls, settlements, etc.

Does that sound reasonable for a new bookkeeper offering discounted onboarding rates?

Also — when I meet her, what should I go over so I don’t freeze?

If anyone has tips on what else I should bring (notebook, laptop, simple pricing sheet, business cards?) or anything I should make sure to cover during the meeting, I’d appreciate it. I really want to help her out and start strong.

I just got off the phone with my first potential client, and I’m excited but also trying to make sure I price things correctly and show up prepared.

She runs a small trucking business and has about 150–200 transactions per month. On the call, I told her my standard rate is $300/month for ~150 transactions, but since I’m building my portfolio, I’m onboarding a few clients at $180/month. She seemed happy with that.

I’m thinking:

  • $75 per month of cleanup
  • OR a flat $250–$300 for January → now

Does that sound reasonable for a new bookkeeper offering discounted onboarding rates?

Also — when I meet her, what should I go over so I don’t freeze?

If anyone has tips on what else I should bring (notebook, laptop, simple pricing sheet, business cards?) or anything I should make sure to cover during the meeting, I’d appreciate it. I really want to help her out and start strong.

New 2027 Chevy Bolt !!!

I just bought a 2027 Chevy Bolt LT (my first EV ever!), and I’m charging it at home using the regular Level 1 charger on an outdoor outlet. But it’s only giving me 1 mile per hour, which feels extremely slow. I expected it to be slow, but not this slow.

The charger’s brick is blinking green, so I’m assuming that means it’s working correctly. I don’t drive much, so I originally thought Level 1 would be enough… but at this rate, probably not.

Is a 2019 Tesla Model 3 Long Range AWD a good car?

Range AWD with 62,000 miles for $21,000 from a local private seller. The car in the pictures looks clean and well‑taken care of. I’m planning to see it in person soon, but I wanted to get some opinions first.

For context, I was originally looking at 2023 Model 3s at dealerships, but this local 2019 popped up, and the price caught my attention.

This would be my first electric car — I’ve driven stick‑shift cars my whole life. I also have some health issues, so I’m looking for something low‑maintenance, reliable, and with strong AC. I’ve heard EVs can be great for that, but I want to make sure I’m not missing anything.

Is this a good car for someone in my situation, and is $21k a fair price for this model/mileage?
I’m located in North Carolina, if that makes any difference for pricing or ownership.

Thanks in advance for any advice.

Trying to find my first bookkeeping client (remote in NC) — feeling stuck and could use advice

Hey everyone, I’m a remote bookkeeper based in NC and I’ve been trying to land my first client, but I’m honestly struggling.

I’ve posted in Facebook groups, but it feels super oversaturated. I’ve also DM’d small shops and local businesses, but no luck there either. I’m working on updating my website, and I’m even considering making simple content or maybe a TikTok just to get myself out there more.

My pricing right now is:
$75/month – 1099/simple clients
$149/month – small businesses
$249/month – higher‑volume or multi‑platform sellers
• Cleanup fee: $75
• Setup fee: waived

Part of me wonders if my prices are too low, or if the fact that I don’t have a profile picture on Facebook makes people not trust me. I know I have a lot of work to do, but it’s tough staying motivated when I haven’t gotten that first client yet.

I have the Sprint Unlimited Plan with 4 lines. I plan to upgrade 3 phones using current trade-in promos. Then I would like to switch to the essential plan since it's much cheaper monthly. Would that affect the promo credits? Should I wait until the financing is done? The promo doesn't seem to apply to the essential plans, which is why I haven't switched before upgrading phones.
