Disappointed at the dangerous drivers on San Juan Island this weekend

I'm a cyclist and have been to the San Juans 6+ times over the last few years for bikepacking. I've generally had pleasant experiences with drivers.

This weekend on SJI is different. I don't know if it was because of the fair, but within 10 minutes of leaving the ferry terminal we had drivers swearing and honking at us. We had a Jeep pass us at 50 mph within 2 ft (I could've reached out and touched their car). I talked to another group or cyclists who reported a similar experience with a Jeep.

We also had tons of people pass without slowing down at all around blind turns. One car that passed us nearly hit a motorcycle coming the opposite way.

Just seemed like people had 0 patience or care. It's very upsetting that people would rather risk the lives of others than wait for 30 seconds until it's safe to pass.

Get scammed with the "5 year price lock gurantee"

A year ago I signed up for Xfinity internet. I specifically enrolled in the 5 year price lock gurantee. I had to go in person to an Xfinity store to finalize the setup (I can't remember why, I think they had to verify my identify or something).

Yesterday I got my bill and saw that our internet doubled from $50 to $100 a month. It looks like when I went in person, they actually signed me up for a different plan with only a 1 year discount.

Now they're saying the initial plan I signed up for isn't available. 🙃

Is it worth getting my EMT for the main purpose of volunteering when I already have a Wilderness First Responder certification?

I got my WFR this year and loved it. I got it mostly because I was just interested in the content as someone who recreates outdoors a lot. I work full time in tech. I'm not trying to change careers.

I have since started volunteering as basically a first aid provider for some regional endurance events. We obviously have the ability to call 911 and also have support vehicles to come get people, but I am occasionally operating alone on scene (at least initially). Most incidents are falls/minor trauma, and some occasional heat injuries.

I'm considering getting my EMT, for a couple reasons.

  1. Because I like learning.

  2. A lot of people don't really know what a WFR is. I don't think my scope of practice would really change much for my current volunteering setup, but it would at least be a more recognizable certification. Sometimes when I approach someone and say "Hi I'm X and I'm a Wilderness First Responder" I can see based on their expression that they don't know what that is lol.

I've also looked into volunteering as an EMT, but there aren't many opportunities near me (Seattle).

The program I'm looking at is the Idaho Medical Academy hybrid EMT course. A fully in person course wouldn't work with my full time job.

My questions:

  1. How hard would it be to maintain my national registry?

  2. Is it worth getting my EMT and trying to maintain it if I know I won't work as one? I live in Washington state and don't think I can even get a state EMT certification here unless I'm working as one.

How much of my own food should I bring for STP?

Do people usually rely entirely on the rest stops? Or should I supplement with my own snacks?

Which STP bib goes on my bike and which goes on my person?

My packet has a cardboard "bib" with just my number, and then my actual bib.

For other Cascade rides I've just put the bib on my handlebars. What do I do with the cardboard one?

Rest in peace little guy

Was hammock camping with my Nitecore NU20. I had it around my neck as I slept, and woke up to find this.

Anyone know if you can get just the backing plate? The light itself is fine.

Stop inflating your sleeping pad all the way

I've been camping several times a year for the last ~10 years or so. One thing I never found comfortable was sleeping in a tent on the ground. I'm a side sleeper and have broad shoulders, and inevitably I would wake up in the middle of the night with severe shoulder pain, flip to the other side, sleep another hour before waking up, repeat.

On a trip this weekend, it finally dawned on me to stop trying to cram the max amount of air possible into my pad. Instead I inflated it just enough to keep my body off the ground. The difference was remarkable and I slept through the night.

Sorry if this is obvious; it wasn't to me 😭

SRAM quick link doesn't lock into place after second use

I'm helping a friend replace their chain on a 9 speed cassette. We're using a 9 speed SRAM chain with a gold quick link. I accidentally routed the chain wrong through the derailleur the first time, so I undid it, routed correctly, and connected the quick link again. This time, I could fasten the quick link with my hands alone. Even after using the chain tool, it doesn't snap into place and I can easily pull it apart. What gives? The chain is a SRAM PC 951.

Normal lever travel for GRX?

This is my REI ADV 2.3 which has about 3500 miles on it. I've never replaced the brake pads. I just measured the rear pad thickness at 2mm each.

I feel like the lever travel is pretty far. I can't remember if it was always like this or not. Does it look normal? Should I try replacing the pads anyway? Does it need a bleed? It does stay consistent throughout rides so I don't *think* it's an issue with air in the lines.

Suggestions to streamline my computer and light setup?

I have a Garmin 840 and two bike lights. One is the Trek Flare seen in the picture, and the other is a Sofirn BS01. The Trek I use for daytime riding and if I get caught in the dark - the Sofirn I use for extended night riding.

I want to streamline my setup a bit more. I think it's possible to mount the Trek light below the Garmin, but I'd need a new out in front mount and some adapters to make that happen.

I'm also considering something like a Raveman FR500 which mounts directly to the Garmin.

Anything else I should consider?

Black VanMoof abandoned on Westlake

Saw this last evening (forgot to post then) - it's near the intersection with Valley St.

Have to apply a ton of force to shift into the smallest cog

I bought a used 2008 Roubaix that I'm fixing up. I replaced the left shift cable because it was all frayed. When trying to shift into the smallest cog on the front chainring, you have to apply a ton of force and then it snaps into place. Sometimes, it will take several clicks and nothing happens with the first click (there's no resistance).

Also note that this is a Dura Ace shifter, but the rest of the bike is 105 - guessing this was replaced at some point.

I tried to flush out the shifter with a bunch of rubbing alcohol, but that didn't seem to do anything.

Any other ideas?

San Juan Islands

Did a weekend trip to San Juan Island and Orcas Island in Washington state on my REI ADV 2.3. Camped at San Juan County Park - probably the best view of any campsite I've ever stayed at.

Climbed Mt. Constitution (stripped all my gear off first) which was brutal but beautiful. Definitely has me looking into some lower gearing for my bike lol, might put an 11-46t on it the next time I have to swap chains.

How did I do? $175 for 2008 Roubaix

I impulse bought this. It needs a new front brake cable, front shift cable, and bar tape. I've been wanting a bike to learn how to work on bikes without putting my gravel bike out of service.

Wheels are true, and rear derailleur and rear brake works without issue.

It's a 61 and I'm 6'2" so it's maybe a size big for me. Not sure yet if I'll use it as an around town bike or sell after I fix it up.

[Update] I trimmed the branches on Westlake

I trimmed two areas this morning where I was bonking my head every day. There's one section slightly south of this that I'll get to in a couple days.

Sweet Protection Falconer - is it sitting too high on my head?

Measured my head at 56cm, got the M/L. It feels kind of high to me and I also feel pressure in my temples. I got it at a discount through ExpertVoice and can't return it 😭😭😭

u/trimTheJib — 3 months ago

Do you bonk your head on branches on the Westlake trail every day? Consider reporting to Find It Fix It

This stretch of Westlake has 3 or 4 different areas where I have to duck to bike past. I've reported to Find It Fix It but if lots of people do it I'm hoping it gets resolved faster 😊
