A hair tracking solution for everyone

Hi all, i've noticed that a lot of posts in this sub highlight that they've noticed hair thinning recently, OR they make a post with only 1 picture and no before/after. I've been on fin/min for 1.5 years and before I jumped on, this was a huge issue for me too. I didn't monitor my hair, if I did, I would've caught my hair loss way earlier.

So, over the past few months, I built a solution, an app that allows you to take consistent hair progress photos called Follicle - Hair Tracker. I achieved this by creating a "ghost overlay" feature, which displays a transparent old photo over the live camera so you can get the same angle every time. I also created a lighting feature, which compares the lighting of your photos with the "baseline" overlay photo.

I also made other features - such as a progress timeline gallery, treatment reminders and comparisons.

I know how crushing hair loss can be, so I thought this genuinely might help some people here. Happy to answer any questions in the comments. I hope that you all have successful hair journeys!

I got tired of inconsistent hair progress photos, so I built this

I’ve been tracking my hair progress for over a year now and one thing that constantly annoyed me was how inconsistent progress photos are.

Different angle = different hairline

Different lighting = different density

Different distance from camera = completely different result

Half the time I genuinely couldn’t tell if my routine was working or if the photos were just misleading me.

So I ended up building an app for myself called Follicle.

The main thing it does is use a “ghost overlay” camera, where your old photo appears transparently over the live camera so you can line everything up properly and take genuinely consistent progress photos.

I also added:

- side-by-side comparisons

- lighting tracking

- treatment reminders

- progress timelines

- progress cards

- AI progress reports

I originally made it for tracking my own fin/min journey, but I figured other people dealing with hair fall/regrowth might find it useful too.

Would genuinely love feedback/suggestions from people who actually track their progress regularly.

Managed to save myself (for now) from male pattern baldness!

I'm really happy with my progress so far! It looked way worse in person, I had to wear a durag all the time. minoxidil + finasteride + a strict hair care routine worked! Monthly hot oil treatments, bi-weekly deep conditions/washes, twists instead of braids (less tension) + AFRICAN BLACK SOAP is the GOAT!!!!

For anyone wondering about the progress cards, I made my own hair tracking app called Follicle. The main feature is a ghost overlay, which places an older photo over the camera so you can line yourself up correctly and get the same angles every time. It also has a bunch of other features. It's available on the app store and play store.

Fin + min update (25M)

I Started taking finasteride and minoxidil in Jan 2025. Hair has recovered nicely from balding, I experienced a shed phase in month 3, stabilisation in month 6 and then regrowth in month 10/11. I'm happy with my progress so far.

25M almost 1.5 years Fin + Min (pic is from shedding phase 3 months in)

if you think that you are balding, PLEASE don't leave it until it's too late. Act NOW!

25M 1.5 years on finasteride + topical minoxidil. Used minoxidil back in 2024 to grow my beard too.

The shed on month 3 was BRUTAL, started stabilising on month 6 and then started seeing regrowth around month 10-11. My hair is thick so it doesn't look crazy bad, but the bald spot was very much there.

25M, almost 1.5 years on fin + min

I originally made this tiktok to promote my app, but I didn't realise how much my hair has recovered since starting finasteride and minoxidil, I just went with the flow. Pretty proud of my regrowth. I definitely need to see where I'm at now given that it's mid-may.

I used minoxidil to grow my beard for about 8 months, I came off it and my beard has stayed 1.5 years later!

I got tired of inconsistent hair progress photos so I built an app for it

I’ve been on finasteride + minoxidil for over a year now and one thing that always annoyed me was trying to compare photos. It got to the point where I genuinely couldn’t tell if treatments were working or if the photos were just inconsistent.

So I started building an app for myself called Follicle.

The main feature is a ghost overlay camera, where your old photo appears on screen while taking a new one, so you can line everything up properly and actually take consistent progress pics. I also added a lighting analysis feature because lighting completely changes how your hair looks and I wanted a way to keep track of that too.

I use it for my hair, but I guess it also works if you want to track facial differences too.

There are also comparisons, reminders, AI reports and other stuff, but the consistency part was the whole reason I made it in the first place.

It’s live on iOS and Google Play, just thought I’d share it here because I can’t be the only one who struggles with this.

I got frustrated with inconsistent progress photos so I built an app for it

Hi all, I’ve been tracking my hair regrowth for over a year now and one thing that always annoyed me was trying to compare photos. Sometimes my hair would look noticeably better or worse just because the photo itself was different.

It got to the point where I genuinely couldn’t tell whether treatments were actually helping or if the photos were just inconsistent.

So I started building an app for myself called Follicle.

The main feature is a “ghost overlay” camera where your previous photo appears on screen while taking a new one, so you can line everything up properly and take much more consistent progress pictures over time. I also added a lighting analysis feature because lighting can completely change how hair density looks, and I wanted a way to keep track of that too.

There are also comparisons, treatment reminders, progress tracking and AI reports as well, but honestly the consistency part was the whole reason I made it in the first place.

I’m not the target demographic for this subreddit specifically, but I figured some people here might relate to the frustration of trying to track hair progress accurately.

It’s live on iOS and Google Play now if anyone’s interested.

Why do people ask if they're balding and don't show any before/after pics?

You may just have naturally thin hair, or a naturally high hairline, or maybe your hairline is just maturing. Without before/after pics, it's hard for any of us to tell if you're balding or not. Take pictures months apart! Save them in your camera roll, or use dedicated apps like Follicle - Hair tracker (I made this app specifically for this problem) and then you'll be able to tell if you're balding or not.

Most of you guys are fine, if you had 'before' pics, you'd know that and you wouldn't have to worry.

Hi all, so I started to lose my hair back in December 2024 and I found it difficult to take consistent photos and compare changes. So, I decided to make a hair tracking app that allows me to do so: Follicle.

I created a "Ghost Overlay" feature that places a reference photo, that you set, over the live camera so you can get the same angles every time. This reduces the time taken to take progress photos and makes comparisons clearer. You can toggle the visibility of the overlay photo too.

The app also features basic progress reports, treatment logging and reminders, AI progress reports, and a private photo gallery which orders your progress photos in chronological order. I hope you guys like it!

The baseline image is actually from Jan 24th 2025, feels good to not have to wear a durag all the time anymore. "Take your durag off", "let's see your hairline", the dark ages are over 😭😭. I still have a long way to go but I'm happy.

Hi all, I made an app to track hair growth with some cool features, it's almost like a gym tracker but for your hair. It's out on the app store and currently in review with Google, but I have absolutely no idea how to advertise it without sounding annoying/a spammer. I have got a few users on IOS but I have no real clue how to push it further. I didn't really think this far ahead, I was just going to let it grow organically. I'm wondering what everyone here does?
