Authenticator has the worst UX of any app on the LightPhone

When a one time passcode is shown on screen, there are only two interactive elements

  • '<' (top left corner) = Go back a screen
  • 'REMOVE' (the lower half of the screen) = Delete this account forever, with zero confirmation

I have clicked "REMOVE" by mistake several times, as it is the biggest thing on screen.

Now, I have secure backups of all my TOTP secret keys (seeds) but I strongly suspect I am in a tiny minority of people who have this. Anyone else would be instantly screwed.

In what world did someone think this was ok!? To be clear, "REMOVE" should be buried another menu deep and should ask for confirmation. You cannot have catastrophic data loss on a possible misclick. That is full on insane.

Vivaldi on Ubuntu 22.04, Mint 21, Slackware 15.0 media issues

We have had some issues with this in the 8.1 series. I have updated my personal blog post with some information along with test builds that should rectify the problems.

Let me know below if you continue to have issues with proprietary media on these older distros, following that fix.

Payment might not working during maintenance

I do not recall ever having another card where this happened. Makes it hard to trust.

[N/A] Splitting funds between neobanks when travelling

On a trip at the moment, with so many posts about locked accounts I have split my funds between three accounts, Wise, N26 and Revolut. So if I did hit an issue with one of them it won't be such a big deal. Overkill? Perhaps. It almost certainly will not be a problem as I have never had an issue with any of them but hey, there is always a first time I guess. Curious how many others go to this trouble or do you just trust nothing will go wrong?

Goodnight from my part of thr world

I looked at the watch and realised I should stop reading reddit and go to bed.

I mean that is one way to handle dual time 🤔

Some of my colleagues are working in a different timezone for a bit.

I need to know when they wake and are available without thinking too much… but don't worry I have a great solution. 😆

Can we please start pronouncing the name 时刻美/Shíkèměi/Skmei correctly?

TL;DR If you speak English, try "Shuh‑Kuh‑May". If you've been saying "Sk‑mee", "Skemmy", or "Sk‑meh", don't worry your watch likely forgives you. 🤪

I’m not here to drag you into an unexpected Mandarin pop quiz. I just want us to stop sounding like we're inventing new Pokémon on the spot. This post is not about saying the name perfectly but trying to be a bit closer to the intended name, so when someone makes a video or casually mentions the brand it is clear which watch company they mean. Better to standardise on something that bears at least some relation to the actual name.

To start with, it is worth understanding that company behind the Skmei brand is actually: 广州市时刻美电子有限公司 (Guǎngzhōu Shíkèměi Diànzǐ Yǒuxiàn Gōngsī).

The key bit in there is 时刻美, which they choose to transliterate to 'Skmei' for Latin scripts (note however above that comes out as Shíkèměi, which is your first clue). I guess what they hoped for with this "Skmei" transliteration is that it would be short, simple, clean looking and perhaps they naïvely assumed Westerners would pronounce out the first two letters and say the last part, so something like "Shuh-Kuh-May", which is close to the Chinese.

  • 时 (shí): "shuh" (rising tone) and means time or moment
  • 刻 (kè): "kuh" (falling, short and sharp) these days mean 15 minutes (but was originally one-hundredth of a day, so 14.4 minutes because China used to use decimal time)
  • 美 (měi): "may" (falling-rising tone) means beauty

You should also keep in mind that Shíkè (时刻) read together suggests a moment, a point in time, or at all times. So what 时刻美/Shíkèměi/Skmei means is something poetic like "beautiful at every moment".

I appreciate the idea and I like that it has such a Chinese name but choosing Skmei over something like Shíkèměi for the Latin version was I believe a big mistake. Yes, it looks cleaner but clearly most people have no idea how they should pronouce this. Nonetheless, ultimately for anyone that actually cares it does not matter what they wrote in the Latin script because this is a Chinese company with a Chinese name, so the pronunciation of the Chinese version is clearly the intended/correct way.

So if you want to know how to pronounce it, and are still unsure just take the Chinese (时刻美) and ask a native speaker or stick it in any online service that can read out the Chinese.

P.S. Worth a read to better understand what a Shíkè is: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Traditional_Chinese_timekeeping

I bought this mainly because it is so silly and so cheap. However, this is a functional watch. It even has a few of the common digital watch features. You can show seconds, day of the week, month and date, it has a stop watch and count down timer. On the other hand it does not beep, has no alarm and no backlight. It only comes in one size but it is relatively big (at least for my thin fingers) and can be adjusted down with cheap ring size adjusters from AliX, which is what I did.

My biggest issue with this is not if it makes sense as a daily driver (I am pretty sure it does not) but more that you cannot AFAICT change the battery. Right now that is not the end of the world. It was only annouced on their blog at less than a month ago

https://skmei-watches.com/blogs/news/skmei-2699-ring-watch-the-ultimate-unique-fashion-accessory

This means, if you bought it right now you will get most of its battery life and it is close to the price of a battery anyway.

The bigger problem is that eventually it will be ewaste and buying a new/replacement one a couple years down the line will be risky because if the supplier has old stock you could easily get a dud or something that only lasts a very short time.

I mean I get it to an extent, making the case open would add to the cost but it just feels wrong to me. Otherwise it is a fun little piece, even if it is largely silly and pointless.

P.S. A couple of video shorts from the Skmei youtube account to give you more views:
