Great Crested Grebes, Rutland Water

This is a capture I made at the start of the month.

I went to Rutland Water to watch the Ospreys - they were incredible to watch but I didn't manage to get any particularly interesting photos of them. While I was watching them though I did get lucky enough to see this display between a couple of Great Crested Grebes.

The submissive one in this photo had an established nest with its mate that I had observed the day before. The next day though the dominant one here had decided to move in and build a nest about six feet away. Inevitably they clashed, starting with a display before they came to blows.

In the end the encroaching bird won out and the established bird was forced to retreat, abandoning its nest. I did see it later engaging in a courtship ritual with its mate though so I hope they went on to form a new nest.
