You might not believe it but look what I found just after reading up on red Burgs.. '02 Domaine Leroy Les Beaux Monts!

2002 Domaine Leroy Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru "Les Beaux Monts" - stunned. I am letting it sit for sentiment to settle and get close to 60-65 Fahrenheit now and then going to crack it open; I know it's a little early but it's a Saturday and I can not wait. Please correct me if I'm wrong but my understanding is that for a bottle like this I should not overly decant it and should start sipping slowly and within 15-30min of pouring into the decanter and then let the flavor profile evolve as it continues to open up.

For context, I have been reading, sampling, and generally learning more about wine recently as I really appreciate the artisanship, flavor, history, culture, community, and the nice buzz that comes with responsible consumption ha. I posted this yesterday as I was recently lucky enough to try just a couple glasses one of one of the two best white Burgundys of my life; the only other expensive bottle of wine I've drunk (again just a glass or two with friends) thus far was a Leroy white Burgundy. As I've researched and sampled, I do have a general preference for reds, specifically Burgs and I do really enjoy specifically dry Chardonnays (usually will go for an affordable Chablis, which I always thoroughly enjoy) but the Leroy and Coche white Burgs blew my mind.

That brings us to today, I'd done more reading on the winemakers discussed in the threads from yesterday and was set on sampling affordable red Burgs NT and had the goal of trying a legendary red Burg by the end of the night. I have a wine fridge with a few bottles that I rarely open - these were gifted to me a while ago by someone I did a favor for and even though I knew nothing about wine, I know those few bottles were special so I held onto them. I've given most of the few away now to important people in my life as special gifts (I never looked up the prices but knew they were special and each recipient knew more about wine and appreciated it more than I did at the time) but had just a couple left and sure enough - boom: one of the last that I happened to not give away is the legendary red Burg I thought I'd try in years.

How to ensure rare book purchase is authentic

Hi everyone, I have collected a couple rare books but my dream book is much more expensive than the ones I've gotten so far and there are some "signed editions" available. I have no experience purchasing *expensive* rare books and would really appreciate any advice on where to look online to ensure that I'm receiving an authentic copy of the book - signed or not. Thank you very much in advance to anyone who may have thoughts!

One of the most amazing wines I have ever been lucky enough to try

I typically prefer reds but love dry whites and this (and a Leroy white I was once also incredibly lucky to try) is probably the best wine I have ever had a chance to drink, period.

Watching Japan in the world cup last night with my Japanese friends and two Rolexes purchased in Japan!

Hope you all enjoy the photo - although the game ended in a tie it was a fun evening with a fellow Rolex and watch enthusiast! Pictured are a Rootbeer GMT and and Zenith Panda Daytona. Rooting for Japan next game and it is a great country to get watches in my experience.

"Zenith El Primero" Daytona Panda

Purchased in Japan in 1998 from an AD as a gift for my father who never wore it because he does not share my (our) interest in watches. As I became more focused on horology, he eventually gave it to me as a gift on a special occasion because he never wears it anyway. I am so appreciative to my Dad and to be able to have this, the most special watch in my collection, and hope to pass it on to my future son someday!

Piaget Polo wrist shot and backside

Hey fellow vintage watch enthusiasts, I shared the front of this watch recently but I cannot stop admiring it and wanted to give a less "sterile" shot to show how it really shines on the wrist plus a pic of the back in case anyone is curious about the condition. Really like this watch for a number of reasons, personal aesthetic preferences being foremost and story second (lucky to have found rare one that still has original warranty card and papers!). And yes, I know I need to set the time and day haha.

[Rolex Day-Date Presidential w/ diamond-studded bezel & more] a day browsing the Diamond District

Decided to venture into the Diamond District a bit over the last couple of days, mostly just to observe and see how that specific game works but also look around for potentially interesting pieces. Sharing some pics of some of the diverse watches I was able to see!

Beautiful rare vintage Patek (+ Tiffany & Co) in full yellow gold I saw today

I'm not sure the exact reference number of this watch but I suspect it is either 2517 or 2488. Either way, a relatively rare, well-preserved beauty and very tempting to scoop up as an impulse buy!

[Piaget Polo (Vintage)] picked up my first Piaget today; I love the look on my wrist and like the story/collectable aspect of finding one that still has its papers

I know the black dials have been more in demand historically (and are also great looking) but I personally love the look of an all-gold, classy watch (e.g. yellow gold day-date with a champagne dial). To be honest Piaget was not really on my primary radar but I think this watch is a beauty - and although a "jewelry watch" - the thin profile and endurance of time that these things have demonstrated shows that they are quality; like many coveted Cartier "jewelry watches"

GS Short Thesis

Going to keep it brief and happy to reply to follow-ups but, high-level, GS is trading peak-on-peak right now with real risk of both multiple compression and downward revisions; further, there are relatively clean ways to hedge the risk that GS keeps running in (what is in my opinion and as reflected in multiples and empirical data from institutional leverage to retail leverage to levered ETF volume to etc.) a euphorically over-optimistic market; these hedges should be much more resilient in a draw-down so the setup is incredibly asymmetric if hedged and, if you have the balls and staying power, I think a great absolute short. Disclaimer: this is nothing against the company, it is an incredible franchise in many ways, but purely a point-in-time relval mismatch (with a potential catalyst to correct it) coupled with potential for extreme asymmetry (hedged or not); and of course, this is not investment advice and do your own due diligence.

GS is the pure-play AI proxy within financials for every generalist PM with a mandate to not underperform; these flows have led it to re-rate far more than the peer group and it is now trading at multiple sigmas above its average historical relval vs e.g. MS (cleanest peer) or JPM. Further, as we know, the sell side chases the stock price, narrative, and momentum so revisions have been going up and up when, in fact, much of GS's business is highly cyclical and their primary bottom-line driver (trading) has benefited from a number of tailwinds in recent years, which could reverse sharply in a market draw-down / de-grossing event. Once there is a scare around AI and a market correction, GS's M&A/IPO estimates will necessarily need to be revised down and trading likely will be alongside it; further, this catalyst (e.g. AI trade has become overextended) also serves as a logical potential catalyst for the de-rating as portfolios rebalance exposure across sectors. Further, H4L as confirmed last week does NOT help dealflow hype.

MS is the cleanest short as it is the second most pure-play expression of the theme discussed above but has a much higher quality (and resilient in a recession or drawdown) business model - essentially 60% revs coming from wealth and asset management and the remainder coming from what is the majority of GS business (equity trading - GS is bigger in FICC - and investment banking); further, MS has historically traded at a premium to GS due to its more stable and resilient earnings stream and now they are trading at par because the generalists piling in want the pure play and "it's Goldman" - it should keep up if the market continues to rally and will outperform if the market crashes. I like layering in JPM/BAC as well as MS because the relval between the "brokers" (MS/GS) and the traditional GSIBs is also very wide and traditional GSIBs benefit from H4L as their bottom line is driven way more by rates via the asset/liability dynamics of how they can leverage their massive consumer deposit bases than it is by IB/trading; WFC's capital markets functions are more nascent and C has unique dominance in FICC trading but otherwise still growing their equities trading and IB franchises so they are probably less clean pairs if cap markets Euphoria continues. One final thought: APO or another alternative asset manager. These are also levered to cap markets sentiment so could be another long to consider throwing into the basket (APO like MS has a stealthily resilient business model via Athene).

[Watch-Hunting] Abroad in Japan

There are often price and supply discrepancies across markets, as most of you probably well know. I was lucky enough to find another hard-to-find "Starry Night" Saxonia at a Japanese watch dealer after searching Lange store, ADs, and reputable aftermarket dealers all over NYC (as well as Lange flagship store in Tokyo) to no avail. Added bonus is zero sales tax as foreigner with passport and then the import customs tax is much lower because they simply assess a lower levy (LSD%) on watches that are not fully metal (this obviously has a leather strap) and the strength of the Dollar vs Yen was the cherry on top.

[Rolex "Batgirl"] - some watches look better with an oyster bracelet but the aesthetic of the Batgirl with the jubilee is supreme imo. Beautiful timepiece

Hope everyone enjoys the pics and glad to be sharing with the community! Got this Batgirl earlier this year and think it looks even cooler at night when the light hits it right and lights up the dial. Big fan of Rolex (as well as A. Lange as may be deduced by my username) and look forward to sharing more of my Rolex collection with this community in the future! While I like the batgirl a lot, I personally prefer the sky-dweller (everose gold, rhodium dial, oyster); I love the fluted bezel and the complications of the sky-dweller. My favorite Rolex (and tied for favorite timepiece) is my "Zenith" Daytona Panda in pristine condition that I was lucky enough to acquire.

[A. Lange Saxonia Thin "Starry Night"] starting with the flipside pic "tax" for this one but I think the dial is even more beautiful. Love this watch: front, back, and the elegant slim profile.

This is the first timepiece I saw that made me think "I want to wear that someday" and prompted me to start learning more about horology. I love it and have one that I wear at least a couple times a week and another unboxed one just because the dial is becoming rare so I jumped at the opportunity to secure another in a foreign country where it was cheaper and available. Hope everyone enjoys the pictures - front and back - of probably my favorite watch that I own. The fact that they were able to create such a beautiful piece with an up to 72hr power reserve housed in a 6mm case is quintessential A. Lange & Sohne.

The "grail" of my collection; not touching it for now

I was lucky enough to opportunistically acquire this unworn, unboxed 405.035 with full provenance from the original owner at a very fair price but the big kicker is that the original owner was a big collector and was able to somehow (big collector) acquire this Datograph (which Philippe Dufour himself has called the best chronograph in the world; I'm not sure which but he owns a Lange Datograph) in 1998; BEFORE it was released and shocked the horological world, forcing the Swiss "Holy Trinity" to rethink their engineering, at the 1999 Basel Fair. I love the brand and my daily wear is one of my couple Saxonia Thins with the copper blue "starry night" dial (yes, I am an A. Lange junky). Anyway I'm new to the community and wanted to share one of my favorite watches that I own; I love the aesthetics and craftsmanship - but that is a given for A. Lange - I think the story behind this one coupled with the condition it has been preserved in are what make this specific timepiece special.

[Rolex Sky-Dweller] not my first dream watch but the first watch I technically bought and have come to love - and the one that got me into the watch game

I've always loved watches and had dreamed of getting an A. Lange Saxonia Thin "Starry Night" (copper blue dial) - which I am grateful to now own a couple of - but invested my money and waited until I was older to start building a "better" collection. Anyway, this came up opportunistically and I finally pulled the trigger on my dream of being a watch owner. I've come to love the skydweller - the complexity (12hr, 24hr, date, month, bezel setting mechanism) yet elegance between that fluted bezel, beautiful dial and 24-hr subdial; I also love how heavy and substantial it feels in everose (personal preference). Excited to be part of the community. Hope you guys like my first (later in life than most) watch!
