I wonder where this Celtic knot or Ocean plait (as sailors/fishermen call it) woven pattern first appeared in Medieval times.

Can anyone recognise this in any source material you can point me to, please?

Kringle is a traditional Danish circular knot design.

We are going to make a ‘Kringle’ circular rope mat. There will be only 1 size available that could serve the purposes of becoming a coasters, table mats/trivets. see a photos attached below of this rope mat design.

  • max. 9 participants
  • you will receive full instructions & support to make your own mat or two during this daylong workshop.
  • you will leave with a finished mat of your own, but most importantly, you will leave with the skills to be able to make them again as a gift for your loved ones, or to decorate your own home.

In October I’m offering this workshop for the second time this year in Edale, following a successful day in May.

£60 per person

book your place here: https://walkinglantern.com/rope-workshops/edale-oct-2026-kringle

The workshop is one full day (6 hoursin total) delivered in two sessions over a Saturday.

The workshop in the morning will be from 10am -1pm (with a tea/coffee break at 11.30am) followed by a lunch break. Then the workshop continues with an afternoon session from 2-5pm (with a tea/coffee break at 3.30pm).

  • Saturday, 24 October
  • 10am - 5pm
  • Edale, Derbyshire

All tools and materials are provided during the workshops and you can take home with you what you make. If you came to previous workshops, I hope you are assured that we will have plenty of new techniques and ideas for your hands to explore as well as practicing your existing rope making and knot tying skills.

All abilities are welcome, both more experienced crafters and those who are complete beginners at making things by hand. I am confident to meet you right where you are, help you get started and tailor the workshop to suit your skill level.

I look forward to teaching this workshop for the second time in Edale.

If you have any questions, please feel free to email me at hanna@walkinglantern.com.
