What’s the worst that can happen? They might threaten to post you on Facebook? Make your social media private or temporarily deactivate if it gives you peace of mind. Flooding you with calls and texts? Block the numbers and, if necessary, consider changing your SIM.
Most importantly, document everything—screenshots, threats, messages, and any unauthorized contact with your friends or family. Contacting people in your contact list who were not declared guarantors for debt collection is prohibited under NPC rules.
Don’t panic just because they are threatening you. Legitimate debt collection is different from harassment, intimidation, shaming, or unauthorized disclosure of your information.
We are not running away from our responsibilities. If we don’t have the capacity to pay right now, we deal with what we can and negotiate when we have the means. Keep records, protect your privacy, and report abusive collection practices when necessary. The SEC accepts complaints against covered lending/financing companies and OLAs through its complaint process.
