Visiting museums during the Grand Prix event?

Some of the museums are open during the weekend-long event, but require an event pass because the entrances are within the event "secure area". However, event passes have not been available since early June. Unless you pay $5000.

Air and Space, American Indian, Natural History, (and the NGA too, although not Smithsonian). Are these just staying open so that trumpets can have access to clean bathrooms? If they're not open to all, then why not close the museums? It just feels like a farce and once again, we're being excluded from accessing things.

What are these enormous fences going up now, Tuesday August 18 2026?

Went past the Capitol this morning and I saw these enormous structures being erected in front of the Capitol. I asked the police officers what they were and they told me that it is going to be fencing for maintenance and washing of the Capitol building. I mentioned that these look like overkill and asked the officer if he actually believed that this was merely fencing to protect people from water spray, and quite honestly, he looked at me as if he had never heard of January 6.

I did do some research and the AOC website does describe the big preservation project occurring and this is the right timeframe, but it also describes that they will be deploying “modular vehicle barriers to enhance perimeter protection around the Capitol campus“. AFC described it as a physical security initiative separate from ordinary building maintenance.

These physical barriers look as if they’re at least 14 feet tall. They look like a border wall. Does anybody have any more information on these or guesses on? What’s actually happening here?

EDIT: this is NOT on the race course. It has nothing to do with the upcoming race.

Need anchors who do research. (Re: Dana bash).

Watching Dana Bash and she just doesn’t know enough to question her guests or defend her own positions. It’s infuriating.

Almost every viewer knows more than she does. I also feel that she’s really struggling to find her words too. Just need to get someone else OR allow viewer comments to come up in bubbles as the interviews happen.

FYI: the weaponization slush fund IS NOT the same as struk and page getting a payout. Because we know about it. It was litigated. It went through a process. The slush fund is called a slush fund because there would be NO OVERSIGHT! Come on Dana! Do better!!

Drain holes in sliding door

So I was cleaning out the window well of this slider and noticed these drain holes have water and Vegetation growing in them. I can’t reach into that little hole with my little green machine so how do
I clean in there and empty the water out of it?

Not sure if this relevant, but on the outside of this door there are weep holes and I do push a hose up against one of the holes until water flows out the other one. So I don think it’s related to the outside weep holes. Or if it is, the well doesn’t fill or overflow when I squirt water in there.

The National Mall today Wed July 15, 2026

First photo: West of Washington Monument looking east. The turf is completely torn up. I hope this is slated for restoration soon. Must be damage from the fireworks.

Second photo: The reflecting pool today. Completely empty. Fences along the sides go all the way to the sidewalks, with tarps so we can't see into the area, but I'm not sure why when you can get these photos from the Lincoln Memorial. There were a lot of surveyor's tools (total stations/theodolites) surveying the site. I wonder why they would need tools to measure distances and elevation when they're just talking about resurfacing the liner. hmmmm.

Third photo: a bit off the mall at East Potomac Park Golf Course. The giant lump is the site of the debris dump from the East Wing of the White House. It's been there long enough that it's growing grasses. The Department of the Interior has posted no information on planned removal of the debris. The National Park Service has no information either.

Reported on 311. 4th st se. 7/1

Just reported this guy parked in the bike lane.

I’d love to have my voice heard on the inadequacy of 311 though. It often tells me that I’m on private property and always tries to force name/phone number. Dude, if you want me to get murdered, force me to dox myself.

Home Internet outage affecting savings?

I lost my home internet for three weeks. During that time, I had no information from the enlighten app, which was expected. But now that I’m back online, those weeks still show as 0 energy production.

Just wondering whether my panels really did or did not produce energy during that time and whether the energy company will know that and my energy bill will be normal ish with my regular reduction in energy costs.

Or, is Pepco completely unaware and will my energy bill skyrocket because there is no offset from solar?

Anyone know what I should expect? Thanks!

Semiquincentennial - Bicentennial - Centenial artifacts

Another reddit post made me remember that I've had my grandmother's collection (from her grandmother) of Centennial glass. I just got the pieces out of my "grandma shelf" so I thought I would share them here. The newspaper article is dated 10/15/72 (in grandma's handwriting).

If you have anything commemorating a prior anniversary please share here!

What should I use on these legs to avoid denting floors?

I have this bench that I love but the hairpin legs come to a point with a small tip with hard plastic screw-in tips. When on hardwood, the weight of one or two people and the plastic tips put dents in the floors. I currently have ugly silicone cups with cork bottoms and still have it on a rug.

Are there different options for what to screw into the bottoms of these legs that will protect my floors? I really want to use this bench at a table, which means a lot of moving of the bench, and multiple people on it.

Thanks for any advice

Georgia National Guardsman safely de-escalates armed confrontation

Does anybody know where “Navy Yard South” is?
Or South Place SE?

Here’s a clip from the article.
When an agitated man wielding a hammer and chains began chasing a mother and her young child through the streets of Southeast Washington, a Georgia National Guard Soldier’s civilian police training and teamwork kicked in just in time to prevent a possible tragedy.
On May 22, 2026 at approximately 11 a.m., the team patrolling Navy Yard South was contacted by the Navy Yard Metro team about a man who was making threats and wielding a hammer and told the patrolling team to be on the lookout. A few moments later, a suspect was spotted.
“We observed him near the intersection of South Place SE and Hill Street,” said U.S. Army Spc. Rayshaun Clark, a military police officer with the Georgia National Guard who is assigned to the Joint Task Force-District of Columbia supporting the DC Safe and Beautiful mission. “He had the hammer, but also had chains wrapped around his hands. He was pacing back and forth and talking to himself.”

What bit me and pooped in my bed?

Last night I had 5-6 bug bites on my torso. Today I noticed a few more on my legs.

These were freshly washed sheets yesterday.

Tonight I threw all the sheets back to make sure nothing was hiding in there and I found this. Is that poop??💩. It’s about half a centimeter long.

How do I fix this chipped stain wood cabinet?

These cabinets are meant to be wood with a stain. So why is the finish chipping off? And how do I fix them (the easiest way). I’ve already tried those marker pens w furniture paint but they do t really work on these. The paint either just wears off again or it doesn’t really take. Are these even wood?

I wish there were a bounty for sending in License Plate covers on cars

I would report every single one of these cars with plate covers, especially the ones like this with multiple speeding tickets over 15mph.
