PS Gameday Fresh is my new GOAT.

I wore Dossier Citrus Ginger alongside Bleu de Chanel EDP today, and this was one of the more interesting clone tests I’ve done because my opinion of the Dossier changed pretty dramatically over the course of the day.

Opening?

Honestly, I didn’t like Citrus Ginger much.

I could clearly get the citrus and ginger, but compared with BDC it felt sharp, almost chemical, and completely devoid of the soft sweetness that makes Bleu work so well for me.

At that point the gap felt enormous.

But Citrus Ginger really softened up.

No huge transformation. More like everything gradually relaxed into place. The ginger/sharpness backed off and I started getting:

subtle dry wood made clean and fresh with light citrus.

Eventually there was even the slightest hint of sweetness under the wood.

And suddenly I actually liked it.

The vibe became less “Bleu de Chanel” to me and more nice spa on the Cape. Dry clean wood, fresh linens, citrus in the air. Very tasteful. Probably a few mosquitoes outside because Massachusetts, but otherwise we’re doing well.

It even started hinting at Neroli Portofino territory. Not because it became floral, because it absolutely didn’t, but because of that clean, dry, citrus-over-wood Mediterranean/spa feeling.

By the end of the day:

Citrus Ginger: “Oh, that’s pleasant. I’d wear this on a sunny day.”
BDC: “I want to smell my boo Bleu again.”

And that really is the difference.

Bleu has what I’ve started calling backlit citrus: bright citrus with this warm, soft sweetness glowing behind it and a light woody structure underneath. It stayed stronger and maintained that structure all day.

CG eventually developed a hint of woody sweetness, but its center of gravity remained dry wood + clean citrus.

One thing I’m now wondering: Citrus Ginger may actually be closer in feel to Bleu de Chanel EDT than EDP. The EDP I was wearing has considerably more warmth and sweetness than CG, whereas CG feels brighter, drier and more woody-fresh. So it may not be a completely fair comparison.

So my verdict on CG changed quite a bit:

Opening: honestly borderline repellent to me.
Drydown: genuinely good.

Overall: solid “like”, very wearable sunny-day/spa freshie.

Would it crack my regular rotation? Probably not. I have way too many fresh fragrances fighting for those spots.

But this is probably the first Dossier I’ve tested where I thought, damn, you really needed to let this one cook.

It earned the robe and cucumber water in the end.

PS If you can’t tell I’m a huge BDC EDP fan.

I’ve been comparing these three pretty obsessively, both on scent strips and on skin. A few observations, for anyone interested.

An important note: L’Immensité is my GOAT.

Accuracy: Immense Drift may actually win by a nose. All three are obviously very close, but IB Scent gets the overall vibe remarkably right.

The biggest difference: There’s a super faint, slightly funky, almost BO-ish interaction in L’Immensité that I think comes from the grapefruit/ginger/amber/wood combination. I actually don’t hate it. There’s something slightly human and sensual about it. But I can see why some people read it as BO.

Slight tangent. Some of the most popular scents don’t read as particularly clean. In fact, I think BR540 smells vaguely like…er, earmuffs kids…intimate acts. Musky, animalic or salty often read to me as ‘this is what the person smells like up close’. So the ‘human’ smell in L’Immensité doesn’t really bother me, though it’s more present than I’d prefer in Immensity.

The effect is noticeably stronger in Montagne’s Immensity, especially in the opening. It’s there in the OG, just better balanced. My completely unscientific guess is that Immensity pushes the grapefruit and ginger a little harder, which exposes that funky interaction more (and some are more sensitive to it than others). Interestingly, it has faded quite a bit in my bottle as it has sat.

I basically don’t get it at all from Immense Drift, though. IB Scent seems to go the other direction entirely: I think the amber/sweetness is a little more prominent, which rounds off the grapefruit and ginger and softens that whole effect. Their version has the faintest faintest almost bubble-gum undertone. I’ve noticed something similar in a few of their scents. Whatever they’re doing seems to smooth some of the sharper edges.

And in this case…I actually prefer it. Over Immensity anyway.

All of that said, the OG is still clearly the more refined fragrance. And still my GOAT. The ginger, grapefruit, amber and woods stay in better balance, and the drydown stays more complex and interesting. Immense Drift eventually gets sweeter and simpler. The OG just gets softer. Because of the complexity, I keep wanting to smell it. A kind of permanent curiosity. An antidote to noseblindness.

Performance surprised me too. On skin, the OG projected very well and actually held stronger than the others for the first few hours, but then it kind of fell off a cliff.

My final longevity ranking was:
Immense Drift > Immensity > L’Immensité

For early projection, I’d probably call it Immense Drift / OG, with Montagne behind them.

So my completely subjective scoreboard:

Accuracy: Immense Drift, barely
Magnetism: L’Immensité
Longevity: Immense Drift, by a lot
Projection: Immense Drift / OG
Refinement: L’Immensité
Value: Immense Drift
Verdict: I’ll wear all three but still buy the OG. 😂

What can I say? I like the complexity.

Apparently I successfully proved to myself that one of the cheaper versions performs better, costs less, and may even smell slightly ‘better’ to me…and somehow came away wanting the Louis Vuitton bottle anyway.

Maybe a Christmas present if I can tamp down my Jomashop trigger finger between now and then.

Y'all, Météore and Meteorite are indistinguishable to me. I bought a decant of Météore and wore it alongside the Monty all day today.

After a few hours, Météore’s drydown had just a touch more of a soft floral powder to it and Meteorite had just a hint more spice. But after 10 hours, the only difference is the OG has a touch more longevity and projection on my skin. But that could honestly be due to applying a bit more or application location. For 1/10 the price, though, I’m happy to reapply.

I can confidently say I have no plan to buy a bottle of the OG because Meteorite exists.

Anyone have a different experience?

This is Meteorite v2 by the way.

PS I still believe Météore is a slightly spicier, juicier version of Chrome.

I used AI to optimize my Scentbird subscription and realized it can actually be a ridiculously good value

TL;DR: I prepaid $200 for six months of Scentbird at 3 x 8ml fragrances per month, used AI to catalog my collection and learn my preferences, push me slightly outside them, and optimize my SB queue for both value and discovery. My first 18 scents have $170 in upgrade fees, so I’m paying: $370 total for 144ml, or $2.57/ml all-in. Well-known decanters charge around $5.75/ml. With that as a benchmark, the same 144ml would be about $828. That makes Scentbird about 55% cheaper, a difference of roughly $458. Some individual niche picks are a much more dramatic % difference than that.

The pic is my first delivery. I got the free case that comes with the first order plus the case from my prepaid promo, so…two cases in the first shipment.

I love the presentation. Plastic cases, yes. But natural colors, elegant and simple. Canvas sleeves. Scent note cards. It feels much nicer and more considered in person than I expected from a subscription service.

AI gets a lot of hate, and some of it is deserved, but this is one of those use cases where I think it’s genuinely useful.
I prepaid $200 for six months of Scentbird at 3 fragrances per month, so that covers 18 x 8ml atomizers.

I then had ChatGPT go through my email receipts and catalog my existing fragrance collection, including bottles, decants, and houses like Montagne. From that it developed a pretty clear picture of what I actually like.

I lean heavily toward citrus, fresh spicy, aquatic, green, and certain woody profiles. But I specifically told it not to just recommend 18 slightly different versions of things I already own. I wanted it to sample around my established tastes while also expanding them a bit.

Then I had it analyze my Scentbird queue as an optimization problem:

- Am I likely to enjoy it?
- Does it add something different to what I already own?
- Does it expand my palate without going completely off the reservation?
- What does Scentbird actually cost including the upgrade?
- What does a comparable decant cost per ml elsewhere?

Scentbird definitely has some notable missing niche houses. You aren’t going to find everything. But I had seriously underestimated how much variety is actually in the catalog. There is a ton of designer, niche, and lesser-known stuff to explore.

After optimizing it, this is my current queue:

For comparison, I sampled pricing from established decanters and used about $5.75/ml as a representative benchmark for this kind of niche-heavy queue.

At that rate, 144ml would cost about $828.

So for 6 months:

Prepaid SB subscription: $200
Upgrades: $170
Fragrance: 144ml
Actual cost: $2.57/ml
Scentbird all-in: $370
Standard (MP, etc.) decanter total estimate): ~$828
Standard decanter cost: $5.75/ml
Estimated difference: ~$458

Conclusion:
Scentbird cost is about 55% lower

The $5.75/ml figure is just a benchmark, not a perfectly reconstructed 18-item shopping cart. You can absolutely find cheaper independent decanters, Reddit splits, sales, and deals.

But the individual comparisons are where the value gets super obvious.

My Scentbird cost:
$11.11 base slot + $15 upgrade = $26.11 for 8ml
That’s $3.26/ml.
A 5ml travel spray from MicroPerfumes was about $51 at the time, or roughly $10.20/ml.
At that rate, 8ml would be about $82.

So:
Scentbird: ~$26 for 8ml
Comparable decanter rate: ~$82 for 8ml
That’s about 68% cheaper per ml.

Ex Nihilo Speed Legends is basically the same story.
My Scentbird cost is again $26.11 for 8ml.
A 5ml travel spray was also about $51 at the time, putting 8ml at roughly $82 at the same rate.
Again, roughly 68% cheaper per ml through Scentbird.

Even something less extreme like Fragrance du Bois Santal Complet works.
My Scentbird cost is $21.11 for 8ml.
A 5ml decant from DecantX was about $23.79 when I checked, which works out to roughly $38 for 8ml at the same rate.
Still about 45% cheaper per ml through Scentbird.

This was the part that changed how I thought about the upgrade fees.

Initially, I assumed a +$10 or +$15 fragrance was ruining the value of the subscription. i.e. SB upselling to recover margin. But in a lot of cases, that’s where the real value is.

Paying $15 extra sounds expensive until you realize you’re getting 8ml of a very expensive niche fragrance for about $26 total.

The cheap, readily discounted designer fragrances are often the bad use of a slot. AI actually suggested I swap several of those out for more interesting, higher-value fragrances that still fit my taste.

Obviously there are caveats.

If you only want 1ml or 2ml just to smell something once, a traditional decanter makes more sense. Scentbird also simply doesn’t carry some houses I’d love to see.

So I’m not pretending the ~$458 estimated difference is an audited, rock solid financial statement.

But ml for ml, compared with what well-known decanters charge for a lot of these fragrances, the difference can be substantial.

And 8ml is a really nice amount if your goal is to actually live with a fragrance for a while and decide whether it deserves a full bottle.

I went into this expecting AI to tell me I’d wasted $200.
Instead, it showed me that if you prepay, know your tastes, and deliberately optimize the queue, Scentbird can basically become a decant arbitrage machine.

For all the iffy AI use cases out there, having it inventory what I own, understand my preferences, keep me from buying redundant stuff, deliberately expand my tastes, compare $/ml, and optimize 18 purchases feels like a pretty good one.

The big downside is AI also told me how much I’ve spent total on juice. 😲

What are folks’ thoughts on Scentbird? Especially those with experience.

Anyone else using AI to build out their collection?

Disney hearts a classic. Posted this elsewhere but I thought you’d all appreciate it.

Just got off Soarin’ Over California at Disney World. Someone at Disney must be a scent head. When the ride started, I thought someone next to me had great taste in fragrances. But it turns out the smells they’ve engineered in the new version when you’re flying over California and Florida smell a lot like…Vibrato. Like dead ringer. Needless to say I loved it.

Anyone else been on the new version? Am I wrong?

I found an excellent price on Greenley 4.25 oz. My first PDM. I’ve been eyeing it because it’s got a lot of what may favorite freshies do: citrus, oakmoss, spice, wood. It hasn’t disappointed!

It opens up very green, almost juniper and green apple. It dries down into really nice mandarin and bergamot, almost grapefruit with a nice dry oakmoss note. Extremely smooth citrus. I think this will be one of my favorite sunny fall day wears.

Anyone else a Greenley fan? How does it compare to Sedley?

First wear of a blind Vibrato buy. Did. Not. Disappoint. Right between the fresh orange of Afternoon Swim and the Hacivat grapefruit juice bomb. With just a touch of blue marine. Know what it immediately reminds me of? Blue Talisman. Powerhouse projection, longevity to spare (12 hours +).

Anyone else get Blue Talisman?

I’m curious if other Hacivat lovers love this. Way less soil and musk in Vibrato. I love Hacivat, but Vibrato feels more versatile because it’s less nuclear.

I’d love to hear others’ takes.

UPDATE: You all convinced me to do a side-by-side of BT and Vibrato with your comments. I only have the Montagne version of Blue Talisman on hand, but after wearing one on each arm, they’re definitely more different than I first thought. BT is sweeter, more aquatic, and dries down like very sweet key lime pie. Vibrato stays bright, fresh orange with just a hint of marine. They share a citrus/woody vibe, which is probably why BT came to mind, but I wouldn’t call them comparable. I like Vibrato much more. It feels fresher, more versatile, and much easier to wear in the heat. Thanks for pushing me to test it!

Just opened last week's order and it's a full summer celebration scent bomb. First, I like the new packaging. Nice and clean. The smaller box size makes more sense (and draws less attention from my wife when my multi-buys show up...shhhh). Also they sent a sample! That's a first and I'm happy to see them leaning into that. I hope they keep doing it. Gin Sparkle wasn't on my radar and now I'm seriously considering a bottle.

Here are my first impressions. I’ll see how they evolve.

🥇 Tigris Cologne
My favorite of the haul. It gives me stronger Afternoon Dive vibes than I expected. Bright citrus with a deep, sweet orange opening. It leans a little more grapefruit, while Afternoon Dive comes across as more mandarin orange to my nose. If I’m honest, it feels like a slightly sweeter version of Afternoon Dive. Fresh, vibrant, and super daily wearable. Will definitely be a regular reach for me.

🥈 Gin Sparkle (sample)
This was the surprise of the order. It’s a beautiful marine citrus with a subtle woody, gin-like character. It's more grassy and herbal smelling than gin. Not “you smell like you’ve been drinking,” just faint herbal freshness. And definitely effervescent. I like this one a lot and could definitely see myself picking up a bottle.

🥉 Salted Citrus (blind buy)
This one surprised me too. I get a subtle marine accord that reminds me a bit of the original Nautica, but much more refined. I almost get a touch of coconut in the opening that reminded me a little of Diesel Only the Brave Wild. There’s also just a hint of Buko Intense in there to my nose. Fresh, salty, summery, and really enjoyable. Best description is 60% Buko, 30% Nautica (blue), 10% subtle marine wood.

UPDATE: A few hours later after being in the pool (I sprayed these on different parts of my hand and arm), this is still gentle coconut and wood. Really nice. I’m a convert.

4️⃣ Meteorite V2
This was the comparison I was most interested in since I already own a V1 decant. Both open with a pepper note, but V1 hangs onto the pepper longer and dries into a drier citrus. V2 pushes the orange and cardamom much more, with a sweeter orange (not tart) throughout. At least on first wear, I think I slightly prefer V1’s more restrained style, but I’ll reserve judgment until I’ve spent more time with V2. V2 definitely projects better.

UPDATE: A few hours later after being in the pool, v2 is peppery and sweet and wonderful. V1 is almost completely gone. Love V2.

For context, Salted Citrus was a blind buy. I already had decants of Tigris Cologne and Meteorite V1 from Montagne Decants (always happy to plug!), so those weren’t completely new to me.

I picked up this absolute legend over the Fourth of July. I couldn’t be more excited about a fragrance. I decanted some immediately into a travel size and am taking it with me on a work trip. Beware, coworkers!

I’m sharing this here because I really love the passion in this community. People here actually care about the details, and I’m genuinely curious how others experience Hacivat and how it compares with Hacienda.

Mostly, though, I’m just sharing the joy. This one made me ridiculously happy, and I figured this was the right group to appreciate that.

This is my first Nishane bottle, and I’ve been lusting after Hacivat since I first sampled it. It hasn’t disappointed.

If you’re not familiar with it, definitely try it. Especially if you like Aventus at all. I think they’re very different, but they share musk and pineapple. The latter smells more like grapefruit to me in Hacivat.

The first thing that hit me was the dark, heavy, mossy musk. Underneath that is an absolute musky grapefruit juice bomb. It feels nuclear in terms of projection, although that may have been because I oversprayed. I think my max going forward with Hacivat is two sprays. It’s incredibly concentrated.

To give you an idea of my tastes, off the top of my head (and this shifts a lot, though mostly just the position on the list), my top fragrances in rough order are:

L’Immensité
Hacivat
Alcantara Supreme
Afternoon Dive
Bois du Portugal (my “boardroom fragrance,” as I heard someone else put it)
Aventus Cologne
Aventus
Oud Wood
Neroli Portofino

Note that Eros and Dylan Blue aren’t on my list, but I confess I love those too. Sauvage appears nowhere. I don’t get it. Imagination doesn’t either. I respect the love, but I don’t quite get the hype there either. It is nice layered with Afternoon Swim or Aventus Cologne, though.

For the Hacivat lovers, does the darker, mossier side dominate for you, or do you get more of the bright fruit?

And for anyone who has spent time with both Hacivat and Hacienda, how do they compare?

It’s several firsts for me: first Jomashop purchase, first Nishane bottle and first tester purchase. And may I say, they all worked out amazingly.

Jomashop had a few testers for an excellent price—I got this for $150 with free shipping. Mine showed up looking completely new, including the fancy, ridiculously heavy top. Great first experience with Jomashop, Nishane and tester bottles.

I’ve been lusting after Hacivat since I got a MicroPerfumes decant, and it hasn’t disappointed. If you’re not familiar with it, get a decant. Especially if you like Aventus at all. Okay team, I came back into town after the Fourth and had Christmas in July. I picked up my first purchase from Jomashop (and my first tester). The pineapple, the myth, the legend: Hacivat! It was waiting like a rare Pokémon right there alongside my Chilly Pacific and Eau de Montagne. What a day!

I’m including Hacivat because I’d like people’s takes on how Hacienda compares. Okay, also to show and tell.

Chilly Pacific: I’ve never smelled the original, so I can’t give a comparison. But I love the sweet, fruity citrus. It’s like the spray coming off cold ocean waves crashing over strawberries, blackberries, lemon and watermelon. I really do just enjoy the fresh and sweet vibe.

Eau de Montagne: I didn’t do a full side-by-side, but I own the original, and yes, this smells very, very close. I’ll have to report back on whether it develops more complexity in the drydown, like Silver Mountain Water. But I get faint notes of wood and sugar. It’s like walking through a sunshiny forest meadow full of wildflowers after a rainstorm with a sugarcane stalk in my mouth. I love it.

Questions:
When and if Hacienda is back in stock, is it worth picking up to make my Hacivat last longer?

How does Chilly Pacific hold up against Pacific Chill? Is it still worth buying a bottle of the LV?

Eau de Montagne seems incredible on its own. Has anyone done a good side-by-side and liked the Monty better?

Would love to hear from folks. I’m just overflowing with joy at my haul. Oh, and I also got some EDPs from The Black Stuff to test on the same day! It’s good that I got to the boxes first.

Joking aside, FF and Coconut Castaway are so good. FF is a perfect blend of fresh and sweet. CC is very sweet and takes me to a sunny day on a white sand beach immediately. Recent Squatch convert over here.

I ordered The Black Stuff Clean Craic Bundle and am trying it this week. Definitely premium feeling ingredients. Idk how to say this but they smell more grown up than the Dr. Squatch which I also love). A lot of mint/eucalyptus/pine under and overtones. I don’t like ‘menthol’ (as one Reddit user described many TBS products) smells as much as sweet ones like coconut but these offer a nice change up for me. I may try to find one of TBS’s scents with less ‘menthol’.

The soap is dense and the lather is thick. I really like the travel soap holder that came in the bundle. Folds up and suction cups to the wall. Will use it for my Squatch stuff too. The wood holder looks very nice next to the sink with the bar in it as well. Nice statement in the bathroom. But I’m into this kind of thing—trying new premium fragrances and self care items.

I ordered the beard butter as well and I do like the menthol tilt in the lime and aloe of the beard balm.

I still like Squatch’s Fresh Falls and Coconut Castaway better but I think The Black Stuff scents will grow on me.
