What Are Your Thoughts on Scott Adkins?

I did a similar post like this last week on Michale Jai White and the response to that post was pretty good (I even got a few suggestions, Blood and Bone was awesome.) so I figured why not do one for the other king of B movie martial arts movies.

So, what are your thoughts on Scott Adkins?

Personally I love his movies. Even his “bad” ones are at the very least enjoyable. The only movie that I can honestly even say that I did not really care for was Close Rang, but even then, I still enjoyed him in that movie.

Heck I even like when he plays the bad guy in movies like in Triple Threat or the Undisputed movies.

I find it odd though, both him and MJW should be bigger than they are. Both have gotten chances to shine in some pretty big movies, yet both are still regulated to rather low budget affairs.

The one thing that I do like about Scott though is that he seems to put his all into every role that he gets (I haven’t seen all of his movies, so maybe there are a few “paycheck” films in his catalog.) Then you’ve got MJW who clearly phones it in in a bunch of roles he gets, granted his good movies are exceptional.

"TOY SOLDIERS" (1991) - another fond memory from my VHS-era rental days, if not a classic. Really good Die Hard-esque concept and a good cast (young and established). Some decent action. A remake would maybe work now. Any fans of this one?

Toy Soldiers is a 1991 American action thriller film directed by Daniel Petrie Jr. and starring Sean Astin, Wil Wheaton, Keith Coogan, Andrew Divoff, Louis Gossett Jr. and Denholm Elliott.

Pitched as "Die Hard Meets the Dead Poets Society", its plot revolves around an all-male boarding school overtaken by terrorists.

While the authorities remain helpless, a group of rebellious and mischievous students decide to put their resourcefulness to good use.

What are your favorite go-to hidden gem crowd pleaser action movies?

I run a movie night at a cigar shop in Arcadia CA. The movies are always a surprise and so far the crowd is loving my choices. Recently we watched Hard Target and Riki-O. I’m showing them the b-movie Deadly Prey next week.

I am looking for more picks for movies that deliver in every scene even if it’s unintentional. What are you’re best or even “so bad it’s good” go-to action movies that you know will kill even if those watching don’t share your love for the genre?

My favorites include the Raid films, the World’s End, Commando, Ong Bak, and Born to Fight

First Feature Film On Tubi

I made a action crime comedy thriller for about $24K that was pure guerrilla style. 100% skeleton paid crew (DP, sound, AD and a gaffer sometimes), and mostly deferred actor pay. Wrote, directed, produced, and starred in it myself. I filmed in once then had to start over because my old DP was trash. I literally wasted at least $10K and it took so long to even start again and finish. I started writing it in 2017 started filming in 2022 and finished it in 2026 and it was distributed on Prime and Tubi. I hope you will be able to watch it. Its streaming free on Tubi.

Look Behind is about a cop and a lawyer who's families were killed. They meet someone willing to help them get justice, but its an eye for an eye.

Blue Steel (1990)

Blue Steel (1990)

Rating: 7.5/10

Watched: August 14, 2026

I have super-vague memories of seeing this one on late night cable, probably Cinemax, from way back in the day.

First off, it's got two of my favorite male actors, Ron Silver and Clancy Brown. Clancy Brown's barely in it but damn do I love the man and here, he seems like he's barely 25 years old.

That out of the way, I want to talk about Ron Silver for a minute. He's been a favorite of mine ever since I saw The Entity and that's because there's just somethin' about him. I knew he played the antagonist in this movie, but at no point did I recall how absolutely batshit crazy insane he goes.

I can't (won't) tell you all the nitty gritty details of Eugene's descent into complete and total madness, but I stand by my 'absolutely batshit crazy insane' statement. From the moment he sees Megan (Jamie Lee Curtis) shoot Tom Sizemore dead in a supermarket, he's on a downhill slope.

And what a slope it is. Silver gets the chance to chew on some scenery every now and again, which is just great, but it's those moments where he's pretending to be a totally normal guy that's more chilling, especially as the movie continues.

And as for Jamie Lee Curtis? Well. It's just really nice to see her in something other than a horror movie. As far as cop thrillers go, JLC plays Megan very well, showing a young female cop fresh out of the academy who's already dealing with a boatload of grief from her parents and pretty much anyone who finds out that she's a cop.

Having Eugene tossed into the mix like a live spree killer hand grenade is just the icing on the cake.

Blue Steel's pretty gritty and it's got a lot of neo-noir heart to it, but I DO have to admit that it falls into the realm of the slightly unbelievable in the last half hour, but that doesn't wreck it. Just makes it a bit over-the-top.

Gotta say, Blue Steel's a movie I don't see talked about a lot, and while every single person on the Internet uses the term 'underrated' to mean everything from 'this movie is terrible' to 'I just saw this extremely popular movie from 2000 and no one's talking about it 26 years later so it must not have been popular at all', I really do think it's an underrated movie.

You should check it out. I was pleasantly surprised and maybe you will be too.

Movie Recs

Hey! I need help finding good action movies to watch with my dad before I go back to school. Our little tradition is to watch one every weekend. We have seen a lot of the most popular ones. Some favorites being John Wick, Marvel, anything Jason Statham, the Reacher series, the Alien movies, Inception, The Bourne movies, Venom, Planet of the Apes, etc. We have basically all streaming but Apple TV, so if you could please recommend some good movies that are preferably free/available to stream, I'd really appreciate it. He said I had to find a really good one to end the summer with so all help is appreciated!

"DEEP COVER" (1992) - going for a 90s crime thriller/action classic today. I love this film so much still. The x2 leads are brilliant, really well written and directed. Some very tense action sequences, and just a really good thriller. Any fans of this one?

Deep Cover is a 1992 American crime film starring Laurence Fishburne as a cop who goes undercover to bring down a Los Angeles drug cartel.

It was directed by Bill Duke based on a screenplay by Henry Bean and Michael Tolkin. Jeff Goldblum and Charles Martin Smith also feature.
