Hi! I'm a girl who's lived in Madrid my whole life and I'm pretty fed up with the whole job and housing situation. Honestly, finding a place to live here is almost impossible because there's so much demand and so few properties available, and while jobs are possible, opportunities aren't great either. I've decided to look into what it would be like to live in Romania, and apparently there are quite a few job offers that require English and Spanish. As for housing, from what I've seen, it seems much cheaper to live there (correct me if I'm wrong). I just want someone to tell me if I have any options there and what life is like.
Hi,
we’re four guys, and we’ve put together Westminster’s restaurant scene in an app called Vota. The concept is simple: you see two places side by side (for example Famille vs. Kachina Southwestern Grill), you choose the place you’d rather go to, and the ranking updates instantly. The more people vote, the more accurate the list gets over time. There are still a few duplicates here and there, but I’m continuously cleaning up the data.
Here’s the iPhone version, with categories that actually fit Westminster’s food scene:
https://apps.apple.com/app/vota-restaurant-ratings/id6744969212
And here’s the Android version (finally live):
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=org.vota.app
P.S. I’m not from Westminster (I live in Gothenburg). I’m not collecting data, not selling anything, and the app does not use AI-generated content. I’m posting in a few different subreddits because we now support more regions, and I genuinely want honest feedback from people who actually know the area.
Hi everyone,
I'm Polish and I've been thinking about how countries in our region can develop their tourism and improve their international image.
Not long ago Poland was often associated with economic struggles and emigration. In the past, it also had issues related to organized crime, but in recent years the country has experienced a real tourism boom - record numbers of foreign visitors and growing recognition as an affordable, safe and attractive destination. It has significantly improved its overall image and tourism performance.
Czechia has had a strong and recognizable brand for a long time, and France shows what is possible when tourism is treated as a strategic national priority.
Romania has truly exceptional assets: the Carpathian Mountains, medieval towns like Brașov and Sighișoara, the Danube Delta, the Black Sea coast, rich history and culture. In my opinion, Romania has everything needed to reach a similar tourism level as Czechia or Poland (and in some areas even higher).
However, there are still practical issues that hold it back. One that foreign visitors often mention is the problem of stray dogs, which affects the feeling of safety and the country’s image. It sometimes feels like Romanian society and politicians don’t fully prioritize the huge tourism potential that exists.
Do you think Romania can realistically build a strong tourism brand and reach the level of countries like Czechia or Poland in the coming years? What are the biggest obstacles and what would need to change (infrastructure, promotion, stray animals, political priorities, etc.)? Are there already positive signs of improvement?
I’m genuinely interested in your honest opinions as Romanians. Thanks!
Most bars say they are closing when the game kicks off - Does anyone know a place I could watch it?
22 year old English male here
Hello again!
I'm a french guy planning a trip to Romania with a friend, and have been looking into booking accommodation in the different places we will be staying at.
I was wondering if any of you had some advice, of places or booking sites to avoid, whether it was better to plan well in advance or figure things out as we go, and what price ranges we could expect... Just the stuff we need to know to avoid getting scammed, basically!
Thank you in advance!
Hello everyone,
I'm a 26-year-old father from Belgium, and lately I've been questioning where I truly belong.
My mother is Romanian, from Hodora, and I still have some family around Iași. I was born and raised in Belgium, but growing up I spent almost every summer in Romania with my mother's family. Romania has always been part of my life, even if I never really felt like I belonged there.
My mother used to tell me that when she was young she wanted to leave Romania so badly that she would marry the first person who could take her away. That's basically what happened. She married my Belgian father, but they separated before I was born.
I did know my biological father, but he already had his own family and several children. We were never very close, and he passed away at a relatively young age. Because of that, I was raised almost entirely by my mother and her side of the family.
My mother raised me in French, so unfortunately I barely speak Romanian. I understand basic conversations, but I can't really hold one. Even though I grew up surrounded by Romanian traditions, food, music, holidays and family gatherings, I was the only child in the family who couldn't speak Romanian because my mother was the only one who married a Belgian. That often made me feel like an outsider, even within my own family, and over the years I lost contact with almost everyone.
Growing up in Belgium, I mostly lived in neighbourhoods with many immigrant families. Even though I was born here, I've often felt like I was seen as "the foreigner" rather than simply Belgian. Maybe some of that feeling comes from me, maybe some from my environment, but it's something I've struggled with for a long time.
My mother also always told me that there was no future for me in Romania, so I never seriously considered moving there. I believed I wasn't Romanian enough anyway.
Now I have a young daughter, and more than anything I want to build a stable life somewhere that feels like home. Somewhere I can contribute to society, raise my daughter in a good environment, and reconnect with the country that has always been part of my life.
So I'd like to ask the people who actually live in Romania:
Could someone like me realistically build a good life there?
Which cities or regions would you recommend for work, family life and quality of life?
Do you think someone with Romanian roots who grew up abroad would generally be accepted, or would I always be seen as someone from outside?
I'm not looking for people to tell me what I want to hear. I'd genuinely appreciate honest opinions—the good, the bad and everything in between.
Thank you for taking the time to read this.
Going to be in Romania for two weeks starting Monday. Bucharest and Braila and the festival Beach Please.
Any places anyone loves and recommends I should go shopping at see or eat at? Also what souvenirs should I bring home?
It makes no sense

Is Cluj-Napoca a good place for Brazilian university students?
Hi!!
Ihave an exchange program scheduled to Romania for the 1st semester of 2027. I’ll be studying for one semester at Babeș-Bolyai University, but I haven’t found any content from Brazilian students living in Cluj-Napoca.
I’d like to find information mainly about student housing/dorms, general info about the area, the city’s safety, cost of living, and the arrival process in the country/university.
Does anyone have recent information to share with me?
[Português]
Oii!
Hello everyone. I am a Greek Msc geologist who is going to move for 4 months at Bucharest for his internship. Because of that,I was thinking about whether to learn the language or not. My way of logic is "you are a foreigner up until you learn the language" pretty much. But more than that, I would like to learn the language to better communicate there, to not be left out socialy, and to be frank, to know what they really say about me. In Greece we have a student from South Africa and I see how he has it with us, and I wouldn't like to live the same in Romania. I also want to learn it to make a good impression at my supervisors there, with me working permanantely there in mind (if I play my cards correctly that is)
On the other hand, I don't know if it's worth the effort. I mean, it's all a gamble at this point. I may never return to Romania, for all I know, so it would be all for nothing. Also, will I be able to communicate by using only English?
Let it be known, also, that I am aware that I won't be fluent enough even if I started lessons tomorrow, but I could continue my lessons there, if I ever started them.
So what's your opinion?
Ever since I read the first chapter of Dracula and discovered that he was of Székely Hungarian origin, I've been somewhat interested in this minority in Transylvania. How are their conditions now? What distinguishes them? And how do the rest of Romanians view them ?.
Hey. I was wondering if it’s doable visiting these three cities in about one week, and if it’s easy navigating public transport. I don’t mind making a stop between Timisoara and Brasov (any recommendations?).
My plan is to fly to Timisoara (extremely cheap) and return flight from Bucharest. A friend of mine lives in Brasov which is why I think I’ll do it like this.
I'll be travelling to Romania late next week from Australia. Its winter here. Ive been trying to keep an eye on the weather there so I know what to pack. A few days ago I saw a post saying it was 46°, then a day or two later it was flooding.
Are the weather reports I'm seeing correct? Is the weather really that crazy at the moment?
I have a friend who is from the Republic of Moldova and has dual citizenship. She now lives in Romania, just as a renter. Another colleague and I moved with her to a new apartment in Cluj.
Now we encountered some problems when renting, because we had to have all the data from the ID card, but my friend from Moldova had her Romanian ID card expired in January and had just gotten a new passport, so she still had a valid document with her. But now the contract with some of her data is left blank
The problem is that she can't renew her ID card because she doesn't have a valid address where she lives in Romania and for that she would have to get a temporary residence permit (or I don't know what it's called) at the new apartment. But for that you also need an ID card....
I don't understand how documents work in this country anymore...
Now what could she do to get an ID card, what documents would she need or where would she have to go? And for the temporary permit? Or what should she do first?

Hello,
I am applying to Carol Davila University and would like to know how in depth the biology questions are in the interview and what sort of questions are asked in general. Is the interview the main criteria of acceptance and how does it work?
Thank you.
Hi everyone! I’m moving to Bucharest this September for work. I’m a 26-year-old guy who loves socializing and meeting new people, even outside of a strict work environment. What would you recommend?
I was thinking it would be great to sign up for a Romanian language course to start with. Are there any university-run courses available? Also, do you know of any cozy, slightly quirky or 'freak' cafes where I could work on my laptop and easily connect with other young people? Or maybe places to listen to alternative, electronic, or punk music? Any tips or advice would be super appreciated! :)
