Getting back into cycling

Looking to get back into road biking! Does anyone have a favorite bike shop in the Denver area, or is Facebook Marketplace the best place to find a good deal?

My buddy is letting me borrow his Cannondale gravel bike but it’s just too big for me (5’ 10”)

I’m hoping to spend around $1,500 on my first bike, with the plan to eventually upgrade to something in the $4k–$5k range once I’m riding consistently again. Any recommendations on shops, brands, or what to look for in a used bike would be greatly appreciated!

AQI and TBP

I know we’re a little over a week out, but there gave been some AQI numbers along the Triple Bypass route that are higher than I’d like. Curious how fellow TBP riders think about air quality. I don’t train outside when AQI is above 70 or so. (I’m in Salt Lake.) Then again, this is a one-off event, and I’ve never had issues with bad air on days when I have gone out. What’s your cutoff?

Beginner female returning after 15 years - Hardtail MTB vs Gravel bike for Colorado?

Hi everyone! Haven't ridden in 15 years, doing weeks of research, and keep going back and forth. I need some real-world advice.

About Me & Goals:
5'4" female, athletic/mountaineer build, based in Colorado.

The Goal: Weekend riding, eventually exploring all over CO.

The Terrain: Crushed gravel (like Santa Fe Regional Trail) to start, paved alpine paths (Vail Pass), and eventually light green MTB singletrack (like Red Rock Canyon). Absolutely zero interest in road cycling.

Budget: Under $1,500.

The Dilemma:
I recently test-rode a gravel bike and felt incredibly unstable on the drop handlebars. No Matter how much I research, my research keeps pointing me toward a hardtail mountain bike.. specifically looking at the Specialized Rockhopper, Trek Marlin, or Liv Tempt 2. The flat bars and wide tires feel much more secure.
But I'm worried: Am I dismissing gravel bikes too quickly based on one uncomfortable test ride? Will a hardtail be too sluggish on paved/crushed gravel paths, or is it the perfect confidence-builder for getting back into the saddle?

My Questions:

  1. For CO recreational trails (gravel, paved alpine, light singletrack), which style genuinely makes more sense for a returning beginner?
  2. If you were in my shoes, what specific bike would you recommend under $1,500? (Open to suggestions beyond the ones I listed!)

Thanks in advance for the help!

Ban Bike Defeated

2 of the 3 commissioners declined to approve the staff’s “alternative 1” proposal for Heil.

At this time staff will propose educational and awareness initiatives in lieu of an actual ban.

Thanks to all those that wrote or called in support of common sense.

I will say I was a bit surprised that Levy did open the door to “bike only” days at local trails. Unfortunately there doesn’t yet seem to be appetite to opening existing trails or creating new ones. But that’s a discussion for another day.

Mt Blue Sky

Has anyone done Mt Blue Sky this year? I know they repaved it but wondering how much they actually did. I’m considering riding it soon but debating on my road bike vs gravel bike. It was pretty torn up the last time I did it, but that was before the repave. Sorry if this has been asked, I searched and didn’t find an answer. Thanks!

Enjoyable Gravel Ride on Mosquito Pass?

I'm looking for longer gravel rides and wondering if Mosquito Pass would be a FUN gravel ride. It looks to be 17 miles one-way, so it'd be a great out and back. But the images look super rocky and not the most enjoyable ride? Any insights would be appreciated, also considering Shrine Pass near the Vail Pass Rest Stop.

Edit - Shrine Pass looks to be 11 miles, so I could just do a few out and backs to get higher mileage. but looks super pretty!

I rode 15mi alone in the dark to smell this one plant along the Platte

Datura. Super sweet aroma, blooms at night and is pollinated by large moths. The plant is full of scary alkaloids and has big Do Not Touch energy.

Easy, wooded trails near HR, Parker, etc.

We'll be visiting family in the next month in Parker. I'm doing Ned and FoCo, but we're bringing my partner's gravel bike as well. I am researching different rides, but would like some extra help. She enjoyed wooded areas to ride (since we live in the desert), and I would like some easy wooded roads/single/double track that are gravel bike accessible. Thanks!

New personal best. I just logged 320 miles for this last month! I've never ridden that many miles in one month. And, they've been on single speed, fixed gear, regular road, halfbike and ebike with the family. I love cycling in Colorado.

Anyone missing a 2024 Orange Santa Cruz Stigmata CC Carbon 52cm Gravel Bike? (Golden, CO)

Not sure if my spidey senses are overreacting here, I've been in the market for a new gravel bike for quite some time now and have been pretty active on Facebook marketplace.

I contacted the seller who seemed legit but then referred me to message someone else on iMessage. The guy selling on Facebook is not the same as the original owner, claiming is selling for a friend. When I asked for the serial number and or proof of purchase, the seller told me the bike was given to him by his uncle and that the serial number is obstructed by the custom paint job. It's giving me red flags so thought I'd start posting around. Not sure if there is a dedicated better place to post this, but this was the closest sub I could find. If there is a better place to post/repost please let me know!!

Route recommendations

I’m looking for a route recommendation for a decent road ride on a day trip from Denver. I mainly ride in evergreen/boulder/golden area but have the week off and want to try somewhere new! I was thinking cottonwood pass or somewhere along the I-70 corridor but I don’t always trust Strava to build a route that doesn’t include gravel. I did the triple bypass last year but haven’t really been able to get many big rides in this year, but I’m in decent shape and could probably do a few thousand feet of gain. If anyone has any Strava routes they can send over or just general recs since I’ve never really ventured beyond Idaho springs other than when I did the TBP please send them my way! Great views and/or lunch break stops are also a plus :)
