I remember obsessing over the Mission R when it came out in 2021. At the time, the 718 replacement seemed destined to go electric and this felt like a pretty strong indication of what was coming. Still one of my favourite modern Porsche concepts. Futuristic, but still unmistakably Porsche.
I’ve put together a small Mission R collection in jigsaw puzzle form on Composed for anyone else who likes exploring the details.
In 1969, Argentine racing driver and mechanic Clemar Bucci built a gullwing sports car that looked more like a European exotic than a small-workshop prototype.
The Dogo SS-2000 used a lightweight fiberglass body over a tubular structure, stood just 1,040 mm tall, and weighed roughly 700 kg. Under the skin, it paired a 2.0-liter Peugeot 504 inline-four with a four-speed Porsche 911 gearbox, disc brakes, and independent suspension.
Bucci’s team claimed 160 hp and a 228 km/h top speed, with plans for limited production and even a more advanced Sport Prototype version.
None of it happened.
Only one Dogo SS-2000 was built, making it one of Argentina’s most ambitious forgotten sports car prototypes.
In my opinion, if Gandini had added just a slight touch here, it would have been a masterpiece.
Featuring a mid-rear-mounted engine, ultra-lightweight materials, and a tiny footprint, they proposed maximizing interior space in the true spirit of Alec Issigonis.
Developed by the Rover Group before BMW shifted the modern MINI's direction toward retro-styling and premium features.
The cars were rear-engined, using a small 0.8-litre, 3-cylinder engine (producing about 60 horsepower) mounted beneath the rear seats. This layout drove the rear wheels and freed up the front to act as a proper crash-absorbing crumple zone.
They were designed to utilize a steel frame covered in lightweight plastic or aluminum body panels, paired with Hydragas suspension for a smooth, classic Mini-like ride.
The Spiritual was a 3-meter long 2-door, while the Spiritual Too was a 3.5-meter long 4-door. Despite the extra doors, the 4-door variant aimed to offer as much interior cabin space as a BMW 7-Series while keeping the total vehicle weight at just 700 kilograms.
Rather than relying on the classic, nostalgic shape of the 1959 Mini, these concepts looked like typical 1990s and early-2000s European city cars (similar in concept to the Audi A2).
When BMW took over the Rover Group, the design team at BMW favored a distinct, premium retro-aesthetic, and these radically utilitarian Spiritual concepts were ultimately shelved in favor of the production MINI Cooper launched in 2000.
Unveiled at the Geneva Motor Show, the Diva wasn’t just a student project. Developed with the Espera Sbarro School, it was a fully functional prototype—lightweight, rear-wheel drive, and reengineered into a mid-engine layout with a 3.2-liter V6.
It had all the right ingredients.
With sub-1,000 kg weight, pushrod suspension, and proportions inspired by the Alfa Romeo Tipo 33 Stradale, the Diva showed a more analog, driver-first interpretation of what a modern Alfa sports car could be. For a car that never reached production, it remains one of the brand’s clearest missed opportunities.
This far reaching concept came out around the same time as the purple Stingray III concept from GM. Both were extremely creative designs, but it’s the 300 that was inspiring enough to have its look directly stolen by Fisker for their Karma design (2nd photo)
BMW just unveiled the Vision BMW Alpina concept at at the 2026 Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este.
The concept offers up a glimpse of what the newly established BMW Alpina’s vehicles will look like. It is a sleek grand tourer with a shark nose, giant illuminated kidney grilles, and defined lines. It has commanding proportions, measuring 204.7 inches in length, but it still looks fast thanks to its coupe-style roof and low-slung stance. No current BMW model is mentioned as a basis for the vehicle
