ISO the name of an old-school cinnamon roll sold in stores from the early 2000s.

Pretty niche ask, but I grew up in the north side of Chicago and have been searching for this cinnamon roll for forever! They were sold specifically at a grocery store called Happy Foods, but they stopped selling them, and I have not been able to find the type/taste ever since. I would get them as a kid in probably 2005-2007.

There was a bag around the tray that held them. I believe the logo and details on the bag were purple. The tray was a thick gray cardboard, or even a metal-type tray.

The taste was so unique. It was not the cream cheese type of icing, which I do not like. Also, the icing was a little hard on top.

If you have any inkling of what this brand was called, or even a good cinnamon roll recommendation, please share!

Do we all agree that this part of Irving Park Rd is severely ruined by car dealerships

Maybe this is old discourse because these dealerships are old, but this section of Irving Park rd between Long and Leclaire is such a disappointing part of Portage Park. The park is beautiful and there are nice places surrounding it. But then as soon as you walk or drive past the gelato place and bar right there on Long, its an ugly eyesore with nothing all the way until around where Lavergne is.

If you're a pedestrian, its a massive heat island and a dread to walk through as its barren and the dealerships here park their cars on the sidewalk. And if you're driving, there's often cars halfway out of the drives or testdrivers doing u-turns like mad because they know its not their car. And the car carrier trucks basically always hold up one lane on the eastbound. Maybe its a non-issue for most but I feel like its really valuable wasted space and makes the whole neighborhood worse.

West of Portage park has a lot of charm even with some of the slightly quirky new spots. But I'd take an overpriced coffee spot over a car dealership any day. Also maybe I'm dumb but... isn't a car dealership kinda lame to use our space for? I mean I get maybe have a few cars so people can test drive or see the styling in person but most people are just buying big ugly bulbous "mid-size" SUVs regardless of how poor the quality of the car is. Does taking up the equivalent space of hundreds of apartments or dozens of businesses not sound just a little bit silly?

I'm not picking on any of these dealerships specifically. The majority of all of their cars are ugly and wasteful space wise. But like, is there a good reason they last and stay? Is property tax dirt cheap for them? Is it really that profitable? Are they some sort of dealership mafia (yes I know that does happen sometimes)?

Is there any point to saving the Portage Theater?

Been passing by the theater most of my life, and it has to be in such terrible shape these days. I know the owner has done well with Avondale music hall, but seeing recent pictures of the interior, the holes in the roof, etc, can it realistically even be saved?

The Patio is in much better shape and still seems to close every other year due to A/C issues and/or other issues. So, is it even worth saving the Portage any more?

¡Bungalow Basement Flooding!

In Jefferson Park for 5+ years now and very tired of stressing about basement flooding during heavy rains. Anyhow have interior drain tile contractors and gutter companies they'd recommend? Thanks!

Past Inaction Affecting the Present: Nagle At-Grade Rail Crossing

This is a post about the at-grade rail crossing at Nagle Avenue. I apologize in advance, as this is a bit of a rant. Specifically, how past inaction has affected the current conditions.

As anyone who lives nearby knows, getting across the crossing by car (or even on foot) is not a great experience. A few years ago, CMAP studied travel delays at rail crossings across the Chicagoland area. The crossing at Nagle Avenue was rated as one of the worst within the city's municipal boundaries.

The upcoming crossing renewal project by Union Pacific has me hopeful, but not convinced it'll make much of a difference.

The inactions of the past have led us to the current situation. What many people may not realize is that there were actually plans to elevate this stretch of track nearly 100 years ago.

In 1929, Chicago's City Council passed an ordinance requiring C&NW (which owned the railroad at that time) to elevate the tracks from Foster Avenue to the city limits at Ozark Avenue with underpasses at several major thoroughfares (similar to what currently exists near Foster & Central).

The original completion date was December 31, 1933, but it was later pushed back to December 31, 1939. I've linked the actual ordinance below, along with some additional information for anyone interested.

Of course, none of this ever happened. Instead, the C&NW cited the Great Depression and other financial constraints as reasons it was unable to carry out these improvements.

After two decades without progress, the city's engineers and the Illinois Commerce Commission (ICC) attempted to negotiate a compromise with the C&NW in the early 1950's. However, the meetings and discussions failed to produce an agreement because of various financial disputes. You can read more about these efforts in the digitized newspaper clipping below.

I personally believe that no matter how well you educate motorists about driving over rail crossings (unfortunately, some people will always act idiotically) and regardless of what safety measures local agencies put in place, the most effective solution will always be to separate cars/pedestrians from trains. That would require elevating the tracks, like was proposed many decades ago.

There’s probably no agency, company, or person willing to foot the bill for such a massive project. As such, we will likely be left with the current conditions for the foreseeable future.

Thoughts on Resurrection Hospital Since it got Bought by Prime?

I used to go to Resurrection on Talcott because I was seeing a specialist there. She and two or three other specialists left the practice after Resurrection got bought by Prime Healthcare. It made me wonder if the purchase resulted in increased workload/decreased pay for employees.

Anyone have any inside info on how it is for staff since the purchase happened? Anyone been a patient before and after and has a perspective on how things have changed? Wondering if it's new and improved or if I should steer clear.

Piercing NW Side?

My partner and I are looking for recommendations for a piercing artist. Jefferson Park or Portage Park is closest to us.

It's been a while since our last cartilage piercings. What should we expect to pay?
