Can you recommend me a router? (Sorry, I know this is a lame ask)

Quick aside: I've spent ~6 months on and off buying routers and hardware to do something I assumed would be simple: plug a 4 bay JBOD USB 3.0 HDD enclosure full of movies into the USB 3.0 port on a router and play movies off of it around my house. I want to use SMB and NFS, assign DHCP reservations, and filter connectivity to specific devices based on LAN IP.

I know there's a Table of Hardware but I'm hoping for advice from actual users, buying based on specs hasn't been serving me well.

What are some great recommended routers with active OpenWRT compatibility? I used the WRT54GS and Netgear R7000 for years because they had great development scenes and there was lots of documentation from other hobbyists. Unfortunately my R7000s are too slow to stream big files and all the devices I've bought to use with FreshTomato and DD-WRT (a Nighthawk R9000, Linksys MX5800, another R7000) have introduced insane problems.

I want a powerful router with at least one but preferably two USB 3.0 ports. I'm thinking at least a gigabyte of RAM, quad core SoC. Any recommendations? I keep buying the wrong things, all I know is to stay away from Broadcom.

Should I buy a Raspberry Pi for the NAS and routing and use another router as an AP to broadcast wifi?

EDIT: I'd love to spend <$100 on a secondhand model but am willing to spent up to $200 on something that works, thank you!

How can people use this fundamentally broken shitware?

I'm done, DD-WRT is a joke. I hoped the worst thing about it would be the convoluted config menus and general UI, but unfortunately not. Want to set a DHCP reservation? Fuck you. Want to run a NFS? Enjoy having to restart the router every five minutes. Want to disable dnsmasq? It turns back on automatically. Want to block WAN access to a device? Lol good luck finding that option.

Can I batch add DHCP reservations? How do you manage your DHCP reservations?

Hi! I'm moving to DD-WRT from FreshTomato and need to specify DHCP reservations for ~40 devices (lol). What's the easiest way to do this, wirh JFFS2 storing the client lease db? Is there any reason to use NVRAM to store the db if I don't have to?

Sorry if this is a stupid question, appreciate any guidance :)

2006 Prius suddenly threw P0A93, C2318, and C1241

Hi all!

I have a 2006 Prius with a six year old OEM hybrid battery and ~95,000 miles. It's never given me trouble until yesterday when I accelerated and got the red triangle of death, ABS, and VSC lights (maybe others I don't remember, they went away). After a few minutes the car started beeping and the handbrake light turned on (it wasn't engaged), and the brake pedal felt a little soft. My AC was on when this happened, which other people seem to connect to inverter failures.

Today, I checked the battery because the C-prefixed codes indicate voltage issues - the battery and alternator are fine according to my scan tool. I drove it a short distance, turned it off, turned it back on, and the red triangle and other lights were off.

I know P0A93 is the inverter pump and I'm prepared to replace it, however, the other two confuse me. C2318 is supposedly for incorrect voltage, C1241 is incorrect voltage specifically to the ABS system.

I'm of course praying this isn't a brake actuator. I haven't heard the thumping people mention and the brakes feel fine now.

Can a malfunctioning inverter cause these issues?

Just moved to a new city and I don't have a good hybrid mechanic yet, so hoping to do some diagnosis on my end before I call someone. The inverter is something I could DIY.

Thanks for any input!

[TOMT] Painting of woman in kitchen smoking out window

I remember this painting, I believe it is from a Russian or at least Slavic painter. A girl sits on her kitchen counter looking out her window. She is in an apartment, cigarette in her hand. I believe there is a white radiator in the frame, and I also believe she wears a red sweater. Her hair is in a ponytail. I cannot find a photo of it anywhere online even given these descriptions.

Something about it resonates with me on nights like these where I am doing the same. Thanks for any help (:

Let's plan a Q&A with the subreddit moderators!

We've grown into a fairly large subreddit in recent years! All thanks to God. We should get to know our moderators. Conversation here can be challenging - comments deleted by moderators without explanation, threads locked while interesting discussions were actively taking place, all while petty arguments and name-calling are allowed to stay up.

This is one of the most active Orthodox forums online, and we deserve more clarity on who is moderating this forum and what the decision-making structure looks like. At its best, forum moderation is light-handed and fosters interaction. At its worst, it seems petty and capricious - lately it feels like more of the latter is happening here than the former.

Anyone ever done FOR - PRI nonstop?

Hi all, not sure what I'm in for, I've never done transatlantic before. No problem with the duration, but what's there to do in PRI?

I keep trying to look it up on our internal system but it's giving me errors, saying "not found" - some of us FA's have a Teams chat and no one's ever stayed overnight in PRI before. Should I be worried?

Terrible Experience with Entitled Passenger

Hi all,

I'm still shaking over this. I flew my usual GIG - PRU with Lufthansa and had a visibly intoxicated male passenger who continued to slur his words while speaking with me and our first mate. We tried to calm him down several times but each time we were met with the same hostile, indignant responses.

First he asked about the destination, if any crew lived there or had grown up there. Next, it was about the laws locally - who could buy what, how land value was assessed, all oddly specific. Then came the predictable government critiques thinly veiled as questions. Leading questions, mind you - why is the military so present in political life? Why do they insist upon conscription?

None of us were local - I am Portuguese, for example. But I still have to respect them for their diverse society and strong economy. But it doesn't matter. Have you ever had such a passenger before? How did you deal with them?

How do you guys handle your USB shares? Mine is super slow.

Hi all - I share a USB drive over Samba from a NetGear R7000 running FreshTomato 2026.02, and speeds are super slow. I'm mostly streaming videos, larger files are predictably slower/freeze more. It used to work fine but is now mostly unusable. Is my device just too slow? Looking over the table of compatible devices, there aren't any with 1Gb of RAM and only one with a quad core SoC (of course it's not available anywhere)

Is anyone successfully streaming video on an R7000 from a usb 3.0 drive? Would FTP be faster? What would you guys do in my situation?

I want to avoid having a NAS system, I prefer a JBOD via USB like this.

Thanks for any thoughts
