4th of July chaos, what would you have done?

Hey guys, can we please stop having campfires during Stage 2 fire restrictions?

My girlfriend and I, along with another couple, headed up to Packer Gulch near Tarryall Reservoir on Thursday morning to claim a good dispersed campsite before the holiday crowds rolled in.

Thursday was perfect.

It was quiet, peaceful, and the stars were beautiful. There were only a handful of other campers around, and it was exactly the kind of experience we were hoping for. (Of course there were still a few UTVs and ATVs ripping down the road every hour, covering our campsite in dust, but that’s pretty much expected.)

Then Friday happened.

Group after group started pouring in until we were completely surrounded. We watched people driving straight through the grass, parking hundreds of feet off established roads, and turning what had been a beautiful dispersed camping area into complete chaos.

Then the sun went down.

One campfire lit up.
Then another.
Then another.

Before long there were fires all around us.
These weren’t propane fire pits, and they definitely weren’t tiny cooking fires. There were multiple full-on wood campfires burning despite the Stage 2 fire restrictions. To make things even worse, it was incredibly windy. At one point we even had people walking through our campsite looking for firewood.

The final straw was a group across the road that built what was essentially a bonfire in the middle of dry grass, less than 300 feet from our campsite.

At that point we genuinely didn’t feel safe anymore.
We called 911, reported every fire we could see along with their approximate locations, packed up our campsite, and left.

Maybe that makes us the “fun police,” but after seeing how dry everything is right now, I don’t think it’s worth risking an entire forest because someone wanted a campfire.

If people are willing to ignore a Stage 2 fire ban, it honestly makes me wonder how many were planning to set off fireworks over the Fourth of July too.

I hate leaving a trip early, but I’d rather lose one night of camping than wake up surrounded by a wildfire.

Did anyone else camp around Packer Gulch this weekend? Were you seeing the same thing, or did we just get incredibly unlucky?

Any recommendations that will also have free camping?

Just looking to go on a trail that isn't super hard that will also have a place to camp at or near the top of the trail. I've done Switzerland trail, road 68j I think it's called, and bill Moore. Have a 2012 Nissan xterra pro 4x with good off road tires. Dont want to do anything g too crazy as it is my daily driver still. Just want to do a good day trip not too far from denver.

New to mountain passes

What passes in the San Juans would you recommend to a beginner? I’m decently experienced with technical off-roading but never done something in the mountains. I’ve got a 2002 sport 4Runner with high clearance and excellent all trail tires

First official move under J&J Task Force is in the books. ✅ I’ve moved professionally for years, but today was the first one under my own name and we handled it. Hot day, stairs, heavy furniture, full truck, tight schedule. Done right. Now booking: • Moving • Yard care • Junk removal • Senior care

Bill Moore Lake with the Trailform Collective!

Our group did our annual Bill Moore Lake trip last weekend and had a blast... lots of newcomers who got to test their rigs on their toughest trail yet.

New gear goofin, Colorado style.

I’m 2 months into this cargo bike and loving it! I went with the tote because of all the random sized things I haul for work. This weekend I fabricated some accessories. Phase 2 may be a faux lid to replicate and roof top tent and of course a Widdle Wadder.

Bunce School + Crash Site Trail

...including some sudden, unplanned parking.

Did my favorite local route after work yesterday. The water crossings had receded and I had the trail to myself. Great way to take the sting out of Monday.

July 21-25 - San Juan Mts Cancel or Keep?

Hey everyone! Literally booked my flights at 8 PM, and then 4 hours later saw the news about the fires near Ouray. Talk about bad timing—it feels like nature is sending a sign.

My trip is planned for July 21–25, and my main goal was to hit the area for some high-alpine lake treks. I still have a few hours left in my 24-hour cancellation window. Is it worth keeping the trip alive, or am I just going to be hiking through a total smoke screen?

Appreciate any local insight!

Dirt trails

I’m looking for dirt trails similar to Old Flowers Road. That trail was pretty much exactly what I’m looking for, mostly dirt with some rough sections, ruts, and washouts, but not constant rocky terrain.

I drive a full-size truck, so I’d prefer wider trails without tight trees or narrow shelf roads. I don’t mind deep ruts or muddy sections, in fact, those are my favorite part. I’m just trying to avoid trails that are narrow with loose rocks, and rock crawling.
Any recommendations? Tia!

Reminder, just because it says its AWD does NOT mean its 4WD!

This yahoo was spotted on Georgia Pass on Sunday, June 21st. Moron was lucky one of those larger rocks didn't puncture the battery.

Need Some Advice

So I took my new to me truck to get an opinion on some new shocks and struts for a small lift and to fix driver side lean.

Currently have Bilstein 4600’s installed. The previous owner took out the xreas system. Guy at the shop said this is stock height and there are no spacers installed anywhere but you can tell there’s no forward rake. I don’t want to raise it more than 1.5” but I want it level and I don’t want driver lean.

I was quoted $2500 for parts and install for 5100’s around all 4 sides and some new 1.5” coils for the rear.

Is that a fair price? Seems high to me. Should I just leave it as is and just install spacers to fix lean? Should I just get assembled front shocks and do it myself? If I do 5100s do I need to lift the back too? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Recommendations - Cinnamon Pass

I'll be visiting Creede and Lake City next week. I have a Subaru Forester Wilderness with Falken Wildpeaks A/T Trail tires. Do you think I'll be able to drive Cinnamon Pass relatively okay?

Lifting my 2004 Tacoma

I have a 2004 Toyota Tacoma that I’m looking to get lifted, and I’m hoping to find a shop that’s experienced with Tacomas and Toyota trucks.

I’m located in Colorado Springs, but I’m willing to travel anywhere along the Front Range, including Denver, if the shop does quality work and has a good reputation.

For those of you who have had lift kits, suspension work, or other off-road upgrades installed, what shops would you recommend? I’m looking for places that you’ve personally had a good experience with and would trust with your own truck.

Bonus points if they’re Toyota/Tacoma specialists or have experience helping choose the right lift setup.

Thanks in advance!
