Made the trek and completed four passes.

Imogene, Black Bear (today); Cinnamon and Engineer yesterday. I followed a more experienced driver and had an amazing time. To think these roads only exist due to mining operations started over 140 years ago is mind blowing.

Colorado vehicle suggestions

Hey guys. I was just looking for some help picking out the right next vehicle. I've been in CO for a year and love living in Golden so plan on staying a while and currently have a Honda Civic. I love it but will need to replace it in the near future. I was looking at Tacomas since they are so highly recommended but am open to some other options.

How recommended is a truck vs something else and how much "All Weather" capability do I really need? I know last winter was weak so I don't have a good gauge.

I enjoy going into the mountains and would like to open up more than my Civic can do but I don't need hardcore overlander capabilities or anything. Just something suitable for some of the rougher passes and roads. I'm also a private chef so I need to be able to reliably reach wealthy estates in the mountains during ski season.

Also what vehicle clearance height would open up the majority of passes/roads?

Thanks in advance!

Edit: I do want offroading capabilities and reliability is important to me. I keep my cars forever.

North Swan & Saints John

Took one of my friends visiting from sea level up North Swan from Breck and then up / down Saints John into Montezuma yesterday. Third time running it this summer and it blows my mind every time, certainly blew the mind of someone who’s never been off road before

2023 Onyx XT across Colorado Backcountry Discovery Route

The journey across the Colorado Backcountry Discovery Route was epic. We started in Steamboat Springs and travelled well over 1300 miles over mountain trails to get to the Four Corners. The route took us 5 days to complete. The hardest day was definitely the Alternate Route taking us up and over Cinnamon Pass. Despite the difficulties it was epic and perhaps one of the most beautiful places I’ve seen in the US.

My Outback has 2” AWD Adventure spacers and Alpha 17” wheels and 245/65/17 XL Nitto Nomad Grapplers.

Only one time did we (son and I) question this car’s ability to make it past any obstacle on the route, which was coming across the northern part of Alpine Loop. It was going up California Pass, which comes after Cinnamon Pass, on a switchback. However, what we learned is to keep the X Mode in DeepSnow/Mud which provides a better crawl ratio and torque curve down low. I stayed in manual mode all the way across these mountains and allowed the car to do the work. Water crossings. Mud. Rock. Climbing. Descending. It performed exceptionally well and only suffered a few minor scratches that can be rubbed out with some compound.

Next overland adventure we take (probably next year) the car’s suspension will be fitted differently. I am planning on Rallitek lift (with the AWD spacers), skid plates, and maybe rocksliders.

Geneva Creek

Explored one of the off shoots I’ve ignored the last few times at Upper Geneva and found a great background for my new copilot I found at the outdoor store in Poncha Springs yesterday and couldn’t resist picking up for photo ops. He shall be named Peanut

•overall lower cost of living and housing costs
• mild year round weather
• least amount of snow and cold weather possible

Looking for advice about driving a portion of Bill Moore Lake to hike Breckenridge peak without a proper offroading vehicle.

I've linked the alltrails page for what I'm looking at doing. I've been reading about this route online, and it seems like the main difficulty of this OHV trail is towards the end. It also seems like there should be spots along the road to park up. I'm hoping to drive up to save some distance if I can. I have a Ford Maverick Tremor which has 4wd, a small lift, skid plate, and all terrain tires. I've been able to do about a mile on the cony flats trail and make it to the end of halfmoon lake trial near leadville.

My goal, based on what I've read, is to make it along 251 stopping near the junction with miller creek, north empire creek, and bill moore. From there I'd carry on on foot. It seems to me this should avoid most of the real difficult sections.

Has anyone been in this area willing to share their opinions?

Height / weight considerations for Telluride -> Ouray?

Hey, so I am wondering about feasibility of taking a truck camper from Telluride to Ouray via Tomboy Rd and Imogene Pass. The weight is about 11k lb and the height is 10’ 4”. I figure I can see if it’ll fit through the Tomboy “Social Tunnel” and if not, there’s a good turn around spot right before it. Besides that I’m mostly worried about the weight with regards for the various little bridges.

I’ve watch several videos of the trip and tried to examine specific segments using Google Maps (whole thing has “street view”). There don’t appear to be any places where I’d be overly concerned about roll over or turn radius (it is surprisingly tight).

Ophir pass is not a problem if that is any reference.

Obviously I want to use the truck for what I hoped to build it for, but at the same time I don’t want to be reckless and ruin the fun.

Any advice or criticism would be appreciated, thanks.

Saint John or Leavenworth

Taking my niece and her friend out tomorrow. They are from Chicago. Going early to do a hike around Breck and then I want to get off roading after. Nothing crazy but have not done either of these. Which is more epic for a lowlander to see? In a stock rubicon gladiator. TIA!

Forest Roads? What car do I need?

My wife and I will be visiting from the (smaller) mountains of Pennsylvania. We like to do state forest and gameland drives here and would like to try it out in the San Juan Mtns. What are the conditions of Missionary Ridge and Red Rim roads and what kind of vehicle will we need to bring?
