Depop auto-applied boost AND auto-sent lowball offer without my knowledge/consent, buyer accepted, had to refund because I lost nearly $70 due to it (vent/advice requested)

I am feeling really awful and guilty right now, I would really appreciate some advice on how to navigate this situation going forward.

So I am sure some of you are aware that there is a glitch in the Depop app that auto sends offers to anyone who likes an item, regardless of whether auto offers are toggled on OR off.

However, I was NOT aware of this until it happened to me, last night. I had a designer item listed for around $175, and had never sent out an offer lower than $150 for it within the last few months it has been uploaded.

A buyer liked this item last night, and within 5 minutes purchased it. I was super excited until I checked the receipt and saw I would only be making about $109. I was super confused when I saw this, and even more confused when I saw an offer was sent without my knowledge/consent AS WELL AS THE FACT that it was boosted without my knowledge/consent. This was right before I was laying down to go to bed so tried to not panic and immediately sent an email to Depop support before I did anything.

They got back to me first thing this morning and were incredibly unhelpful, because while they DID admit that this (auto-sending offers) is commonly reported glitch right now, they also more or less gaslit me into believing that I actually DID turn all these features on when I have photographic evidence that this is not the case. They told me my only solution was to refund/cancel the order and explain the situation to the buyer, so that is what I did.

I tried to be as apologetic as I could be in my message to the buyer and even offered to relist and sell it to them at the offer price I was sending out ($150, so $25 off) once their refund processed instead of charging the full price. They have not seen or responded to my messages yet and I am so incredibly anxious and feeling like an awful person right now for disappointing or misleading them when that was never, ever my intention.

Depop is my full-time job (or I'm at least trying to make it my full-time career) so this was a huge loss for me. I know I could have just accepted the $109, taken the nearly $70 loss and just went about my day, but the fact that nearly a 50% discount (including both the offer/boost I never applied) was applied without my knowledge or consent was also so unfair to me as a seller that I wasn't even sure what else to do in this situation because I was given no other solutions by the support team.

I am so upset right now and really unsure of how to proceed. I really don't even want to sell on Depop after this because this is so unfair and I don't want to be bullied by this app into accepting such huge losses on my items in the future. The difference of $109 to $170 (approx. I would have made if it sold without offer/boost, just the base 3.3% + 0.50 cent) may not be huge to some, but it is really big to me. That is a whole week of groceries for me, lost against my own will. And now I am risking having to lose out on the entire sale because Depop is refusing to take accountability for something that is nobody’s fault but theirs. Fingers crossed that the buyer sees the messages and is understanding/decides to repurchase at the discount I *actually* sent out after all this, but I'm not counting on it.

Did I do the right thing given my situation, and is there anything can I do to if this happens again in the future? I would really appreciate any advice or support you could give.

why do people leave reviews like this???

I’ve had this happen a couple times now where a buyer will write a completely positive review for me but leave 4 stars and I really don’t understand the logic behind it??? I don’t wanna ask people to leave 5 star reviews either but these kind of reviews are so annoying since it brings my overall rating down despite all of my other reviews being 5 stars 😭

Sellers who don't respond

What is with the majority of sellers I come across who never respond to questions/check their messages?? Then you go back to see if they FINALLY responded (which they did NOT) just to see the item is no longer available (sold) .... Ugh. I've literally had questions go unanswered for weeks before the item finally sells/become unavailable.. and now it's even worse since the shipping is either cheap or free, things get snagged a lot quicker. The main issue I come across is sellers not putting measurements in the listing, it sure would save a lot of trouble. For the record I'm also on vinted and all the sellers I've come across on there have been very responsive/accommodating... Must be more of a depop thing.... 🙄

If you're a seller on depop here's your reminder to check your messages. 👌🏻🤦🏻‍♀️

Should I ask for a partial refund?

Bought a Coach bag listed as “good condition,” and the seller stated, “See pictures for condition, as there are some stains and marks, but overall in good shape” (the last two pictures are from the seller’s listing). The seller did show obvious wear on the outside, but not the inside. She didn’t disclose the massive staining, gum residue, or hole.

I would like to keep the bag, as it is still fully functional, and I already started cleaning it before I realized how bad it actually was. I bought this bag for way more than it’s worth and was expecting to give it a minimal wipe-down, not a full-on restoration.

Am I justified in asking for a partial refund? I’ve been a seller for a while and would never fail to disclose a bag’s condition.

Could I get this review removed?

Got my first <5 star review yesterday; these pants were one of my first ever listings from months ago from before I knew how to change condition tags and whatnot. I listed them as “like new” even though there was a small home in them I somehow never noticed (It’s visible in the photo). I sold these to her for 4$ with free shipping (she lowballed a 7$ item and I accepted it just to get rid of them) and then she left me this review and messaged me some nasty things and accusations before I had time to respond. I understand this is completely on me but her tone and lowball leave me 0 empathy for her. Anyways do you think it’s possible for me to get this review removed or should I not even bother. I still have 4.8 stars overall.

Sorry for the rant i’m just pissed that someone with a child would lowball me and then leave a review like this over an honest mistake on my end for a 4$ purchase.

what would you do??

okay, i understand this may be a general question but i need insight 😭
a week ago someone bought one of my listings, but sent me a message about 2 hours after the purchase and asked for a refund due to being out of budget ( which i had no problem doing).
anyway, it was still listed and a girl was in contact with me a few days after and was asking to purchase it but that it didn't give her an option ( i figured out it was because it wasn't technically cancelled from the other order that was refunded). i asked if she could wait a few days because i was sick and wasn't able to ship anything out, and she agreed!
today, i relisted the item and contacted her immediately after it was on my profile. ( 8-9 hours ago )
as of 10 minutes ago i get an email from paypal about receiving funds and low and behold the girl i originally refunded had repurchased the item!! 😭😭😭
i dont blame her in anyway but im totally beating myself up over the fact that i should have wrote ' pending order ' or anything in the caption.
what would you guys do??

Not sure what to do

I am a new seller on Depop and as I was packaging a sweater to drop off at the post office I noticed a small hole. it must’ve happened after I washed it. I messaged the buyer and let them know and apologized for the mistake and offered to either refund them or give them a discount. now it’s been about a week and they still haven’t responded. their account says they haven’t been active. I’m worried it’s been so long they’re going to be upset once they realize it hasn’t been shipped. I feel terrible. how would you proceed?

Not sure how to respond…

I purchased a rare piece for a good deal but upon arrival realized it wasn’t for me so I relisted for higher but still way cheaper than I’ve seen it for. Well I got messaged by a girl saying she wanted the item and that I shouldn’t have “flipped” the item. She also said karma’s real babe good luck.

Not sure what to say. I understand she’s disappointed and it sucks she missed out on the item bc of me but i feel her response to me was unnecessary. Rn reselling has really helped me financially but Im not setting out to scam people with my price.

Idk im honestly shocked I got this message and not sure if I should respond.

Bagged item offer and free shipping?

So I got notified that someone bagged items from my shop but hasn’t checked out. Why is it that when I go to send them an offer, it's marked as automatic Free Shipping?

Requesting Reviews from Buyers? Yes or No?

How do we feel about sending out messages for reviews after an item has been confirmed as delivered? As a buyer, I wouldn’t mind doing it especially if the transaction was easy.

Would this annoy you? Considering doing something similar but don’t want to annoy my buyers and wouldn’t overtly ask for five stars. Or would it be better to just leave it alone and let people organically leave reviews if want to and avoid potential backfire.

Seller deletes profile after my purchase?

Is this normal? First time buying product off of depop and after my purchase went through, the product is no longer available and the seller deleted their account. Does this tend to happen? I’m aware of the full refund policy but just curious if this is something to note in the future

Why do sellers do this?

Full disclosure I am somewhat new to Depop. Every time I see a crazy deal (this one is crazier than most), it’s always a case of “This seller can’t ship right now.” Will they actually sell the item at that price at some point? Is it just coincidence?

Why is it literally impossible to send photos in Depop chat? It’s so annoying.

Had a situation today where a buyer bought an item, but I realized it was out of stock. I wanted to send her a photo of the same item in a different color, but nope!I can't send pictures in the chat. I ended up making a new listing and sending her the link, but I'm worried it looks shady/like a scam link.

Why hasn't Depop updated this yet? It makes customer service so much harder than it needs to be. What do you guys do when you need to show a buyer a picture?

This rubs me the wrong way.

A buyer raised an issue with an item and returned it, but it turned out they got me mixed up with someone else and sent me the wrong item back. I refused the refund and explained why and provided proof. The buyer even admitted their mistake in my messeges to them. Depop gave them a refund anyways. I argued and Depop gave me a "goodwill gesture" return of my payment and told me they'll only do it once. Am I missing something?

first time seller left the cutest note in my order 😭

got my depop order in the mail and something has to be clinically wrong with me bc the seller put this in there and I almost teared up from how cute it is 😭 like she's just a sweet baby seller omg I had to leave a thorough review and send a message wishing her the best of luck in her selling journey

Wrong items shipped out - how to fix??

I had to go of town unexpectedly so I had my roommate send out some packages for me as I can’t afford to suspend my shop right now, and she mixed up the labels. She is a trusted friend I have known for years, she’s successfully sent out many things for me before but she simply made a mistake. I have encountered and fixed this problem before, but it’s been literal years and the system has changed a bit so I wanted to ask how you have gone about solving this in recent times. How can I properly get the correct items back to me so I can send them out to their rightful owners? Thanks in advance :(
To be more specific:
How can I get shipping labels to them that they can use to ship it back to me? And how do I then send out the right items?
Luckily the first buyer is being super sweet and cooperative, I’ve reached out to the second buyer about this and I hope she’s also willing to work things out.
I’m so embarrassed 😞

Talk to the seller first or just file a claim with Depop?

I ordered a YoungLA set that was described in excellent condition and there was no mentions of any flaws in the description… I received it today and the sports bra is full of deodorant marks and massive pit stains😭 the shorts seem to be fine but the top is gross

The last pic is what was on the listing and there were no flaws mentioned, is this justifiable for a refund or should I just take the L? And if so should I reach out to the seller or just go straight to Depop? I’m a seller too so I’m a little nervous about getting a bad review back if I were to leave one. This is my first time dealing with a potential refund / issue any advice is appreciated!
