Buying bamboo flute as a beginner

Hi guys!

I am new to playing this instrument. I don't know from where to start and which flute to buy. I want to play Indian classical melodies/songs and melodies. Don't have any interest to play in band for now. Is it ok to start from base flute as I have interest Indian classical melodies/songs and melodies? Which scale base flute or flute I can buy?

What is difference in playing xiao and flute? Can I play indian melodies on it? I don't have any idea on both absolutely a beginner

Thanks in advance

Flute 7 Days Progress

So a week ago i bought my flute and you guys helped with some advices so thank you so much :3

In the first day i was able to generate a sound easily (it was really airy though) and play something like hot cross buns. The next days i started training on my tone and making my notes sound better and get rid of the airy sound. I can now play the first octave with this level in the video (it sounds less airy in real life compared to the video i don't know why exactly) and i can play the second octave less efficiently (i don't wanna get close to the 3rd octave in the current time xD)

The nice thing is I'm getting rid of the airy sound gradually and my sound gets better and better everyday. On the end of every day i realize a noticeable difference from the day before. I may wake up and be able to hit a certain angle unconsciously and my sound gets better out of nowhere or something.

Anyway, what do y'all think of my progress in 7 Days? I'd be grateful to hear what you think!

Flute headjoint stains underneath my mouth

I've been playing flute for about 15 years and settled on my beautiful Haynes about 6 years ago as my step up/forever flute! The only issue I have with it is purely out of vanity (lol) which is the silver tends to mark my chin whenever I play for long amounts of time.

Is this a natural thing that happens with silver and/or is it a reaction to my makeup? It's a very silly question but I'm always wondering how I could prevent this without hindering my sound! Thank you guys in advance :)

Can I get a lip piercing and still play flute?

I’m thinking about getting a labret piercing (the one in the middle of your lower lip) and a friend pointed out that it might affect my playing. Do any of you have any experience with playing with lip piercings? They look cool but not cool enough to permanently stop playing.
I’d love to hear any thoughts/opinions/experiences you might have. Do I get it anyway?

Generally how much should this repair cost

I saved a flute from an antique shop that had it basically at the elements, I don't care about tarnish but the pads are likely in need of replacement. The flute does not really play due to a dent around the G# key. It's a dent into the key hole too. Picture included. I mainly just want the dent repaired, I don't think I can afford a full repair, but I can start saving anyway if I can get an estimate. The end piece also doesn't go onto the body piece without quite a bit of force, I'm not sure why. Don't have that issue with the headpiece.

Reality check/advice on my tone

Hi!

So, for some background, I played the flute with a teacher for ~12 years and passed all the exams that can be passed without going the professional route, plus extensive orchestra/wind band experience, yadda yadda.

I stopped playing for ~6 years and I picked the flute back up ~a year and half ago to play in a local band, so this time without a teacher.

All this to say I thought I was, let's say, not bad. And then I began recording myself and I was devastated lol. When I hear myself playing it sounds ok, even good most of the tile but when I record I don't like my sound, it's flat and airy and just not it... I also know that I'm very harsh/critical of myself so maybe it's not that bad and I'm a bit dramatic here...

In hindsight, my flute teacher was not the best and did not correct my posture/embouchure a lot, and I just disvovered recently that I was not covering my embouchure hole enough + I have a tense throat/lips.

The video is a result of me working all afternoon to correct my tone (so I'm not at a 100% interpretation/emotion wise). I know it's not the most flattering tune but I will have to play it soon (It's a wind quator, hence the "abrupt" end of phrases)

Also, my flute is a sonare 601 that I've been playing for ~5 years (owned it for 10 years but half of them she spent in a closet lol) and I still have doubts that it's the flute for me, but I'm attached to it sooo...

So yeah if you have any (gentle/constructive pls) criticism and advice/exercises to do... I'm all ears, thanks! :) and sorry for the wall of text...

Rapid tarnishing

I play the flute a lot, I am very serious about this instrument, ive had this flute for about 3 months now and the metal on the headjoint has went through severe amounts of tarnish and wear compared to the body, even off the lip plating. I play a PFL665QZ flute and I originally had bought it, it was extremely shiny. suffice to say, I had put about 300+ hours of play time on this flute since I got it. would this need COA? also, lately, I’ve been trying to push my low register but it’s slowly becoming more difficult, I am trying to isolate a certain tonal colour on the instrument that’s loud, and dark, but every time I try playing very loudly on the low end, I receive a beating-esque noise. it’s hard to hear from a distance but you feel it when you play, and it only appears to go away after forcefully shoving the keys more ’in the tone hole’ per se. leak? Im not sure.

any good piccolo etudes/practices?

my orchestra is over for the year so i don't have anything to regularly practice with anymore. Does anyone have any good reccomendations for practices to keep my piccolo busy? If it's mainly relevant at all I want to work on my upper register and volume particularly but i'm open to general exercises as well. anything is better than what i have now, which is nothing haha

Starting late

I'm interested in stories of people who started playing relatively late in life. I am 19 years old and will be starting in couple of days. I am absolutely thrilled that I finally got that opportunity but some of the people I know keep discouraging me from it saying it is too late and it will be extremely challenging now. I just want to hear your stories.

I DON'T KNOW HOW TO DO DOUBLE TONGING

I've been playing the flute for 4 years, but I only had a teacher for the past 1 and a half years, so naturally I didn't learn a lot of basic tecnics like double tonging.

Please give me some advice for this technique because when I do the "taka", my neck and my chin moves a lot, so I look like a frog while I do this.

And I can't make it look natural, it seems really unnatural and hard to do the double tonging.

Please share some advice.

Can I just not play this note or something?

It's that B3 at the very beginning. I'm not seeing 3 keys to press at the end of the flute. Can I just not play this piece then or is there work arounds? Or maybe I'm just dumb and can't figure out a fingering chart

What type of flute should I buy if I want a cheap one that can play chromatic scales

So I am very new to the flute world, but I do know how to play the recorder.

I was considering buying a modern concert flute but they are really expensive. I have seen some other types of flutes online for a lot cheaper and would like some advice on which one to buy.

There are many with only 6 finger holes, and as the titles suggests, I would want it to play all notes in a chromatic scale and I don't think it's possible with this type (correct me if i'm wrong!). I've also seen baroque flutes (traverso) and fifes.

I would like to know which flute if the most similar to the concert flute in terms of range and sound. Are there other types of flutes that I should check out? Is there a flute that has the same holes and fingerings as a recorder (but blown sideways)?

Thanks in advance!
