Did I sell myself short

I just got hired at GM. I have 3 years of experience and 2 years of internship experience but not at GM. They have me as a 6A at 130k. They initially offered me 115 but I said I wanted something in the 130-140 range and they came back with 130k. I was employed at the time. Could I have gotten more? All currency is in CAD. Believe it or not it was a 50% increase from what I was originally making.

Help with General Motors advice

I am an intern at General Motors as a controls engineer intern. I have worked for the company for awhile now and just have some questions.

I am looking into being a controls engineer at Parma stamping and metal assembly but have been hearing some not so exciting things. I love controls and have had experience working for GM that I loved. Now trying to settle down I decided Parma’s location is perfect for me.

My only concern is weekend work. I could care less about weekday hours and stress but I need my weekends for me and my wife, it’s and absolute must for me. I’d be ok with a weekend here or there but I’ve heard controls engineers there work every Saturday.

Can anyone attest to this or give me some help with this?

Edit: I have worked as an intern at a company where I was working 60-70hrs a week as an intern but was told to go to a bigger OEM for better work life balance. So far GM has been a lot better with their hours for interns, and what I have seen with their hired engineers.

Leadership lost Billions in EV Plants but no cuts in the Leadership, but only the Salaried staff reduction

GM has invested billions in the EV plants such as the Factory Zero ($2.2B) and Cami in Canada. The resources used to bring these plants up and running was huge. Now that all these plants are nearly shut down with 2-4 Jph, I want to understand how they can recoup their investments from cutting heads with the excuse of Talent swap and Performance ratings? These salaried cuts are peanuts compared to what the leadership spend on their brilliant direction!!

Performance reviews for first time at GM

Hi, I joined GM as part of their MediaOne organization last year towards Sept/Oct. When we were told to come up with goals, we need to based on the ones we can attain and GM will ask for exact proof according to how you met them. Our CMO and her director report/team lead told us that as long as you get “meets expectations” that’s considered safe. So if everyone meets their goals they set, then wouldn’t you get “meets expectations”. Isn’t there a thing at Gm with their new evaluation process that someone has to be lower on the bell curve even if they still “meets expectations” hence the more hunger games kind of environment?

I’m confused. If you still meet your goals, could you still not get “meets expectations”?

Applied for a senior analyst, cybersecurity compliance position. After looking here it seems like I should pull my application? Would you recommend working for GM right now?

What do we call them?

The Apple Managers quickly became ‘The Apples’, or ‘The Orchard’ or later, ‘Applesauce’ and ‘Hard Cider’. It was convenient and accurate. What do we call the new software guys? The GitHubbians? The ‘Everlasting Toil’? ‘Special Agents Glean’? (I know, I know, ‘you can call me anything, just don’t call me late for dinner…’). Are they filled with ‘GitHubris’?

Is your mid year rating really decided even before mid year self evaluations go out?

I heard May 4th was the time to submit "does not meets" - if I survived until now, does that mean I'm probably good?

Left GM for Ford!

Left GM and it was bittersweet! Met some amazing people and also some not so great people. I don’t think it’s going to be butterflies and rainbows at Ford, it’s the same coin, two sides! But the stacked ranking is so toxic and I saw people in the team talking shit about each other to one another and also talk shit about their boss.

Boss also clueless to some degree and can’t keep their own story straight! Welp, good luck and hope SDV work keeps everyone humble….ohh who am I kidding! Good luck with the hunger games y’all!

Yallah, Khalas!

Best spots to live near Milford Proving Ground?

Hey everyone,
I’m starting a new job at the Milford Proving Ground soon and looking for apartment recommendations.
I want to keep the commute under 35 minutes, so I’m mainly looking at Novi, Wixom, or New Hudson. My budget is around $1,600 max.
Where are some solid spots to stay in the area? Thanks!

Tragic death at GM Silao plant – workplace safety, psychological safety, and the duty to accommodate

My deepest condolences to the family, friends, and colleagues of the GM Silao plant worker who passed away from a heart attack on the job. Any loss of life at work is heartbreaking.

https://gmauthority.com/blog/2026/05/gm-silao-plant-worker-dies-of-a-heart-attack-on-the-job/?fbclid=IwdGRzaAR1iStjbGNrBHWHsmV4dG4DYWVtAjExAHNydGMGYXBwX2lkDDM1MDY4NTUzMTcyOAABHrY9DHEslHrmjsUtGSCDjc6FoNy625JL67VKu-5UlK832sHTEvD-DbmNddOW\_aem\_lAAaYCi1fwZhRl6YxsRJDw

The WSWS report mentions extremely demanding conditions: 12-hour shifts, physically exhausting workloads, limited breaks, and even allegations of workers being denied water or restroom access. It also references prior workplace injuries, accidents, and COVID-related deaths at the facility. Conditions like these take a heavy toll — both physically and psychologically — on people who are already giving everything to their jobs.

This tragedy highlights why psychological safety and basic dignity in the workplace are not optional. Employers have a legal duty to accommodate disabilities and protect employee well-being to the point of undue hardship. That includes individualized assessments rather than blanket policies or practices that ignore real human needs.

My own ongoing HRTO case (#2024-56170-I) against GM Canada is an example of how failure to accommodate a mobility disability (blanket “no cane” policy with no individualized assessment) and related reprisal can lead to serious, lasting psychological and physical harm.

If you (or anyone reading) are dealing with similar pressures, document everything and know your rights under the Ontario Human Rights Code (or equivalent in your jurisdiction).

You’re not alone.

Just for educational purposes. Transparency and accountability matter.

Midyear Reviews and Ai projects

Been working for GM for about 5ish years now. I used to be a team leader and then made the jump to engineering.

Anyone else have that feeling of invisible backhand coming if we don’t get these Ai projects started/presented to the EGM? I already have a ton to do and now I’m spending most of my time fiddling around with a fantasy land Ai project.

With mid years coming up I’m feeling stressed out about all of this. I just wanna focus on my work, not fantasy land Ai.

Disappointed and Let Down

Been with the company for several years , coming up on six. Got let go this week in a five minute heartless call. At first I didn’t care much , since the weight of not having to deal with this project anymore was lifted off my shoulders. I was happy to be free after all these years, thinking how I could spend summer with my family and slow down a bit. But it’s day 4 and not having a job is hitting me like a brick . My brain is telling me to go sit at my desk and work, just like I have been doing day and night for the past 4 plus years. Feels weird, not being able to log in , check email and slack , connect with partners, team mates , strategize. Unfortunately I have been discarded like a piece of trash. No use anymore. News is that there was a meeting afterwards and it was said that the folks who were dismissed no longer fit with the future of the company anymore and that they were carefully selected and weeded out. That hurts . A lot. I remember when I first joined as a backfill , i worked so efficiently to come up to speed and carry the project to the finish line, that they could not praise me enough..fast forward to six years later, I “no longer fit with the company’s direction “ anymore . Make it make sense . GM Leadership, shame on you . Playing with people’s livelihoods and maligning their reputation after they leave. Remember today it’s us, tomorrow it’s YOU.

How many layoffs in Austin?

I just got to know yesterday that 2 coworkers in my team were informed in Monday and their last day is on thr 25th. It's shocking because I think they are better performers than me but for some reason they let go them over me?

Anyone know what was the criteria this time? And how many total are affected in Austin?

M Hanley

Hey Hanley, you just laid off 600+ people, and now you’re reposting some jobs on LinkedIn and asking candidates to apply. That’s honestly a shameless move.

Communications team, please guide him before posting things like this.

Pay vs mid point

Serious question, when you look at your midpoint, are you x percent more or x percent lower than mid. Whats the going rate to be at. Or appropriate rate

Question to leadership: How are we suppose to 'own' our jobs while being in fear of getting laid off nonstop

I know for a guaranteed fact that Executive leadership browse this place. I hope they see this. They won't say anything, but I'm sure they will think of a response in their head.

My question is how are we suppose to own our jobs if we fear we are going to get laid off nonstop? Motivation on my team is at rock bottom, even my senior managers feel it. Almost everyone I knew who got laid off was an incredibly hard and motivated worker who gave everything for their job. Now they're gone.

I don't want to own anything if there is a reasonable chance that me (or my teammates who worked on the project with me) will get fired at random, for no reason. Don't even get me started on the forced attrition quotas..
