The insane "Revenue per Employee" gap: AI Labs vs. Legacy Auto (OpenAI & Anthropic vs. Ford & GM)

Saw a post on LinkedIn breaking down how much money AI labs make per worker compared to traditional manufacturing. The leverage these tech companies have is wild. Here is how the Revenue per Employee (RPE) stacks up right now:

* Anthropic: ~$9.0M – $14.0M per employee (~4k staff / ~$40B rev) * OpenAI: ~$3.2M – $5.6M per employee (~5k staff / ~$25B rev) * General Motors: ~$1.18M per employee (~156k staff / ~$185B rev) * Ford: ~$1.10M per employee (~169k staff / ~$187B rev)

Why the gap is so massive:

* Infinite Scalability: Auto requires factories, steel, and massive labor to scale. AI builds a model once and replicates it instantly via software APIs. * Hyper-Lean Teams: AI labs automate their own internal code reviews, data processing, and admin work to keep headcounts incredibly low.

The catch? RPE only measures top-line revenue, not profit. Ford and GM actually make billions in net profit. Meanwhile, OpenAI and Anthropic bleed billions in computing and chip costs just to keep the lights on.

Interview response

Hey, I had an onsite interview June 9. How much longer before I get a response? Or have I been ghosted?

I have sent follow-up emails.

The Possibility of Earning Much More in USD at GM

Is it actually possible to earn a U.S.-level salary at GM without working directly in the United States?
Or does compensation depend entirely on the budget and salary structure of the country where you’re based?
Because honestly, if I were earning what some of those Level 5 positions seem to pay in the U.S., I could probably retire in five years. 😅
I’m curious to hear from people who have experience with global compensation, remote roles, or international transfers.
And while we’re at it… is anyone hiring? 😂
Background: Technology professional.

GM SQE - Interview

Hey There!

I’ve a brief question regarding an upcoming interview for an SQE role (mid-level, 6+ years of industry experience,) and would greatly appreciate any insight here. From what I can gather, the vast majority of individuals follow a hiring process that largely resembles the following:

  1. Initial Phone Screen w/ HR (30min)
  2. HireVue (pre-recorded Interview)
  3. In-person Interview (1hr, Behavioral / Technical)

However, my process seems to be completely different. I didn’t get a call for a screener, or an invite to HireVue - rather, a direct 1hr technical / behavioral interview on Teams, with a Supplier Quality Launch Manager (my potential manager), and a Quality Director (likely his manager).

So my question is, does this in any way indicate only one round total for the hiring process, as these two individuals are almost certainly the decision makers. What is your guys’ hunch, and has anyone been hired here directly from one round of interviews for a similar role, or within Manufacturing? Anyway, regardless of the structure, I plan to interview with the assumption this one is what decides me being hired or not - I’m excited!

Thanks again, and I look forward to any potential feedback!

Salary band differences by org?

Does anyone know if there are band differences by org, specifically Sales/Service/Marketing and Software & Services? I.e., a L8 band has a higher range in a more complex role? I once heard that being in a complex product software role might have a more generous pay range than a social media manager.

New Job

I got a new job and my planned start date is 7/20. I haven’t told my team or my boss yet, also have 8 days of vacation or so left. Planning to use my vacation the week of 7/6 and put in my 2 weeks on the same day. Will they likely just walk me out if I don’t let them know where I’m going? Should I use vacation first then put in the 2 weeks?

TIA

Quitting. Will 2 weeks be honored?

I just accepted an external job with a start date of 8/10. I am planning my exit, and wanting to know if my 2 weeks will be honored or if I will be “walked out”. As it stands, I’d like to take my remaining PTO from 7/7 to 7/17, and submit my resignation/2 weeks’ notice on 7/21. If they honor my 2 weeks, my last day will be in August, and I can stay on my insurance through 8/30.

I work in a field based role and have always received Meets or Exceeds ratings. The role I accepted is in the automotive industry, but not for a competitor.

Sign-on bonus claw-back?

I got a sign-on bonus when I joined. I’m entertaining an offer where I would leave 2 months before the date where my original offer says I have to remain at GM or theyll take back the bonus. And yes inknow i should just ask to push my start date but i dont think i can by THAT much. So my question is, is it true theyll make me
Pay it back? It’s a lot of money for me.

Are we ready to unionize yet?

How many more layoffs and stacked rankings are we going through before we finally have enough?

I heard so many “enjoy shutdown and the time off to recharge” only to think “until you come back and the layoffs start up again after mid-year”

This is exhausting. Stellantis has salary bargaining unit engineers, why not us?

Arden just got a promotion

Did you all see the announcement that Arden was just promoted from senior VP to executive VP? Not sure what exactly the difference is, but she was promoted for significant stride in GM talent and culture, and her positive impact is shown in the recent WOC score lol.

Growth Opportunities

For those who have grown within the company, earned significant recognition, and built a strong reputation, what advice would you give for moving up the ranks at GM?
Do degrees and certifications make a difference? And for those working in technology rather than in commercial/business areas, is this kind of career growth possible as well?

Does anyone feel bad for the operators being replaced by AMRs, robots, etc?

Ford employee here used to work at GM in the past. I had a conversation with my co worker about how he feels about 1000 workers being laid off replaced by 50 robots at FZ. He said if that will be successful he would like it to happen to all the ford plants he was saying how the operators and UAW are awful, and hes glad that some are gone being replaced by Robots. I froze completely. I have mad respect with operators assembling vehicles and let me tell you most of the operators team leaders are nice. They are all working trying make a living feeding family, rent ,insurance etc. I am heavily against any automation, AMRs, Ai taking over their jobs. I feel like its wrong.

Unemployment V Severance

Question first with explanation to follow: Can you not receive Unemployment payments until after your "severance coverage" has passed?

I was in the May batch of layoffs in Austin. Signed up for Unemployment on our "last day" of May 25th. Haven't received any Unemployment payment yet but Ive been submitting my claims every 2 weeks as Texas Workforce Commission said. Till now, the TWC site said they were "reviewing my claims"

Got a call today from TWC, the lady asked if I received severance. I said yes. She asked "paying for how long?" And I told her it was a lump sum for 2 months pay. She said thank you, then hung up.

Now, same day, in TWC it shows my claims are all at $0. This is my first time dealing with Unemployment, and of course they make the process complicated on purpose, but my question is can we not get Unemployment payments until after the "covered time" of the severance has passed? For example will I not get a payment for 2 months? That's fine if so, I get it, but wanted to be sure.

Thanks in advance!

Layoff Today

I was let go today.

I had been talking to my manager about when my title was going to get switched and how I was feeling burned out. Honestly, I don't know how to feel right now. I carried my team in automation, and to not even get a call from HR just an email was a gut punch.

I had a feeling I would be let go because they wouldn't switch me to dev, and I told my manager what would happen to all the QAs in June. I guess all the QAs are now out at GM.

ME SDV

Ive been at GM for 10+ years but let me share with you one of the wildest orgs that I joined for a short few years and then bolted for a better position and opportunity. Being a people leader, I loved caring for the people and had deep connections with them. My thing was if they wanted to learn and get better, as a leader it was my job to provide them with every opportunity for them. I get the calibration process and the "get rid of the bottom performer" mentality. I get how they say even if your person greatly improves, they may not survive because someone else needs to take their place as a "does not meets."I understand and accept its a policy. GM pays me to do a job, so as long as im collecting their checks, I need to abide by the rules.

Now here is where I can share my opinion on this matter since I decided to go to another company. I left because it hurt me to see people have to go through this in our org. Yes I got paid, and bonus was amazing. I own 3 cars and 2 homes, but money isn't everything if you are messing with others peoples livelihood. I didnt sleep well at night working for leaders who simply did what they were told. Its heartbreaking that this org is 90% political. It has nothing to do with performance. I have seen and experienced so many of these cases over the years. Ill give you an example.I witnessed some clowns who barely show up each week, but they know how to play the game and be visible in meetings with higher ups and asks the right questions and causes enough noise to be praised for being "proactive." And then he disappears for the next 3 days and does not even show up for work.

Another instance, we have some crazy chick that always talks about being burnt out, but doesnt do jack, and constantly reports people saying that they want her.

I have seen people work so hard and are so much under pressure they broke down in the bathroom. I heard their sobbing in the stalls.

Things are a little better on S&S but not much. Over at ME, its all about dressing the part and being prepared to give presentations on on the fly. The expectation is you need to dress up as a leader or you would get dinged.

I saw one fella get called out because he had long hair and always wore a cap backwards to work. Yes, I agree you should dress and look professionally, but this org focuses too much on the looks and ignores the value of someone's technical skillset.

Our director is a hard worker and a great speaker. Hes able to sell anything and wants to build an empire to bring his team to the top. I get his vision and I support it. I think where he falls short is the leaders he promotes and most of them dont have an engineering mindset, or they think they are still in the plant. His downfall will be that he promoted people way too fast without letting them earn those positions through years of achievement and accomplishments.

We all came together and a lot of us gave it our best to do this amazing project that would revolutionize how manufacturing is done. So many great people left in the last few years because it was effecting them mentally and physically. We got folks going on mental leave and having all sorts of anxiety attacks. I know this because they came to me and I was trying to cheer them up and tell them everything was gonna be ok. Im not ashamed to say I cried many times at night , not for myself but for the people I cared about and their families.

People are trying to leave...basically everyone under that org. You see leaders coming in and leaving in a year. It sucks because I believe we could have done something amazing if we kept everyone together and worked together as One team.

During all people meeting, its almost dead silent when asked if anyone has questions. Im not afraid of anyone because I have the experience and skills to survive anywhere, but not everyone is prepared for this type of environment and culture.

I write this not to disrespect anyone or bring anyone down. I only wish to share my experience I had in this wild and crazy org that felt I was in the wild wild west.

If I had to do it again, would I? Absolutely. But its only because I had a chance to meet some of the most wonderful and caring people ever. You see how people truly are when crap hits the fan and everything is going wrong and they show you kindness.

If you are reading this and is going through what I described above, hang in there and work hard to survive, , but actively seek for new opportunies elsewhere as soon as you can.

Stay strong!
