Crossed this bridge in Hunza and immediately regretted looking down (Hussaini Bridge + the valley it leads to)

That first shot is Hussaini Bridge, one of the oldest suspension bridges still in regular use in Pakistan. No real handrails, just rope, wood planks with gaps big enough to see the river through, and a very long drop if you slip. Locals cross it like it's nothing, tourists (me included) go a lot slower.

Second pic is the payoff though, the village on the other side in late autumn. Way quieter than I expected for how much this bridge shows up online.

Happy to answer questions if anyone's thinking about doing Hunza on a budget, did this whole trip without private transport and it's way cheaper than most guides make it sound.

Gilgit-Baltistan Residents: 5-Minute Academic Survey Seeking Pakistani Perspectives

Hi everyone,

I'm a Pakistani PhD student living abroad and would value responses from adults in Gilgit-Baltistan for a short study on financial decision-making. This is part of research across more than 70 countries, and I hope Pakistani perspectives from different regions are properly included.

Survey: https://www.soscisurvey.de/tricc-project/?q=PAK

You are eligible if you are 18+, currently live in Pakistan, and hold Pakistani citizenship. It is anonymous and takes about five minutes. Thank you!

Room prices in Skardu

Hey everyone, me and my friend are planning a trip to Skardu and wanted to ask about the current room prices there.
How much should we expect to pay for a basic double room for 2 people per night? We’re looking for budget options, nothing fancy.
Also, is it cheaper to book online or find a guesthouse/hotel after reaching Skardu?
Any recommendations for budget stays would be appreciated. Thanks!

Complete-ish budget guide to Gilgit-Baltistan (costs, jeeps, solo safety, all in one place)

Put together everything I researched into one post instead of scattering it across replies. Covers the basics for anyone planning a GB trip.

Is it safe to go alone? Yes, more solo friendly than most of South Asia honestly. Real risks are altitude and roads, not crime. Solo women should lean toward Hunza/Skardu and dress a bit more conservatively in smaller towns along the highway.

Rough daily budget: 3,000–9,500 PKR/day backpacking style (guesthouse + shared transport + local food). Deosai day runs higher, 6,000–11,000 PKR, because the jeep hire is fixed regardless of group size.

Hunza guesthouses: 1,500–3,000 PKR/night for a basic private room. Splitting rides and rooms with other travelers is the single biggest cost lever in this whole trip.

Fairy Meadows jeep: you can't skip it (union controlled road, police won't let you walk it), but you CAN avoid paying alone. Full jeep is 16,000–22,000 PKR round trip, split 6 ways that's under 4,000 PKR each. Note: foreigners and Pakistanis aren't always allowed to share the same jeep, worth knowing before you plan around it.

How to actually find people to share costs with: ask at your guesthouse the night before, check Pakistan backpacking FB groups, and stay flexible on dates (2 nights instead of 1 massively increases your odds of matching with someone).

Getting back from Raikot Bridge or Deosai gets overlooked a lot, drivers sometimes quote inflated one-off prices if you show up without a plan. Sort your return transport before you leave if you can.

Happy to break any of this down further if useful, or if anyone's got more current numbers since prices here move fast.

Finding good food in Skardu, why is it a pain?

We went to Sok valley & our driver suggested to eat beside the water as the guys are connected from the same village we did order and it turned out to be a disaster.

Next day we went to https://maps.app.goo.gl/HKsXf7HmKmdTDzKt6?g\_st=ic Raspal restuarant. Again poor quality. Dishes were cooked with oil that we could not digest even until next morning.

After having bad food for first two days decided to try home made from Balti Cuisine https://maps.app.goo.gl/WqeeFx29Kn8AEriL8?g\_st=ic
Again such a disaster. This was even big of a disaster as previously I had paid 5500-6000 PKR a dinner or brunch but this lady charged us 10,000 Rs. Again the quality of food was horrible.

Can someone recommend good food options we have only 2 days left and we are heading towards Deosai now and tomorrow we want to go Shigar.

Moved to GB from Punjab! Yayy.

My name is Muhammad Shah Zaib. I'm 23yo. Ever since I remember I wanted to shift towards North. So I did it. Just packed stuff and left. Been here for some time and think I'm not going back at all.

I’d really like to get to know the people, culture and local way of life, learn the language, and make genuine friendships.

I’d love some advice from locals or people who’ve been here for a while:

  1. I’d really like to learn the local language(s). What are the best resources or ways to learn? Not YouTube, it's messy.

  2. What’s the best place to start meeting people and making genuine friendships? Any communities, activities, cafés, clubs, volunteering, etc. that are good for this?

  3. What are some niche things about living in GB that outsiders usually don’t know? Not the obvious tourist/general things. I’m interested in the subtle.

Basically, I want to live here, not just visit. Any advice from locals would be really appreciated.

PS I have a BA in English and dropped out of BS English 5th semester for this. Would love to be friends with anyone who's able to hold a good conversation.

Edit: I'm in Gilgit city right now. Will be here for long. Not until I find some small town I really love and where I can build permanent residence.

Skardu visit in last week of September

Planning a 5-day trip to Skardu with my spouse and kid in the last week of September.

I’ve never been to Skardu before, so wanted to ask people who have been there around this time — how is the weather and overall experience in the last week of September?

Is it too cold, especially at night, for a kid? Also, is Deosai/Sheosar usually accessible around this time, or does it depend heavily on the weather?

I’m mainly planning to explore Skardu and nearby areas rather than trying to cover too much in 5 days. Would also love to know what places you’d consider must-visits.

And how is the scenery around late September? Do you get to see any autumn colors, or is it still mostly green?

Would appreciate any tips, especially from anyone who has actually visited around late Sept.

Hi, clearing up some misconceptions as a Kashmiri.

  1. Vast majority of Kashmiris (real Koshur people) inside the valley, do not consider you Kashmiris. And to be fair, an average Koshur person doesn’t even know what Gilgit Baltistan is. So please do not harbour any resentment against Kashmiris. I hope you get your provincial status soon and get fully integrated in Pakistan.
  2. I saw many comments on this sub that Kashmiri culture and language is closer to Punjabi culture???? I just want to say those 2 things canno be further from truth. Those are two total opposite ends in poles of cultures. You don’t have to find any cultural similarities with us but you also do not have to lie and forge some fake cultural relationship between Punjab and Kashmir. Kashmir (like Gilgit) was heavily isolated from mainland India/Pakistan up until 19th century barring some indirect contact in Pir Panjal range. I am more than happy to answer anything about oyr culture. Linguistically, it has some phylogenetic relationships with Shina, but Kashmiri is very different, different from all surrounding Indo Aryan languages.
  3. Kashmiris do NOT drink pink tea. We drink a salt tea (noon chai/sheer chai). Edit: And we also drink a Saffron green tea (Kahwe) poured from Samovor.

God bless you all. Wishing you best of luck in future.Sample sound text from Kashmiri language:
