Return - Mammotion Instructed me to Cover Hazmat Labels????

I’m currently in the middle of returning my Mammotion robotic mower, and Step 3 of their official return instructions raised a pretty big red flag for me:

"Important: Please completely cover any 'Class 9 Dangerous Goods' markings and battery-related labels on the outside of the package with blank labels. Otherwise, the package may be held by the carrier’s dangerous goods department."

Mammotion issued me a standard prepaid FedEx Ground return label. However, under U.S. DOT shipping rules, large lithium-ion batteries (like the ones powering these mowers) are Class 9 Dangerous Goods. Standard FedEx consumer drop-off locations won't accept a package displaying a Class 9 sticker unless it's accompanied by certified dangerous goods declaration paperwork and a matching hazmat shipping contract.

It seems like Mammotion is providing standard ground return labels to save on freight costs, then instructing customers to cover the hazard stickers so the package passes through standard FedEx drop-off without being flagged.

This leaves customers in an awkward spot:

  • If you leave the Class 9 label visible: FedEx will reject it at the counter or freeze it at a sorting hub because the return barcode doesn't match hazmat electronic records.
  • If you cover the label as instructed: You're covering up hazard markings on a standard non-hazmat label, and if the clerk asks "Does this contain lithium batteries?" at drop-off, answering truthfully will likely lead to rejection anyway.

Has anyone here shipped a mower back following these exact instructions? It seems pretty unethical for them to provide instructions like this when they know this isn't how it should be handled.

Newest update

Looking at the update for Luba 2 1.30.29.20

It says it’ll improve the turns but also messes with the blade on/off logic

Those who have updated, what’s the lesser or 2 evils?

Having the tank turns, or the blades constantly turning off and off?

Holding off on the update for now, my grass is already ruined anyways.

Robot, and RTK offset in app.

We have now deleted the maps, updated the firmware (yea I know), used three different RTKs, two different charging bases, replaced the antenna on the robot, relocated the charging station numerous times and relocated the RTKs, and the location is still failing in the app. The robot and charging station are located where the yellow X is, and the RTK is located there the robot appears in the digital image.

Would you buy the same mower again, or switch brands?

After a season or more with yours, would you buy the exact same mower again, or switch brands? What's the one thing you wish you knew before buying?

Advice Needed

I’ve had my Luba 3 AWD now for about five weeks. Despite the software challenges recently introduced my machine works and I generally like it. My challenges are more about how to successfully manage my mowing and here’s where I could use some guidance from more experienced users.

I have a larger yard. I mow about an acre of grass. When I got this unit in July scheduling the mowing was easy, it was dry and I could go many days in between and keep up. But as we’ve moved into August the rain has returned. Now my grass is growing at an incredible rate and the challenge has become keeping up. The day light hours are getting shorter and the grass is very wet in the morning. If we have a few days without rain the earliest I can get out is about 10:30. The latest I can cut is about 20:00. If it rains, the grass is much wetter and I have found it can’t get out until sometimes as late at 13:00.

I’ve tried cutting wet, it left really bad clumps, and given the way this machine cuts it’s not good at cleaning them up on subsequent days. I am currently cutting very short, I’m finding the shortest setting is not too short. I’m running blades at high speed, using the default speed and mowing path interval. I’ve considered speeding it up and increasing the interval to use less time to mow, but have not yet done that.

I’m wondering if I’m just asking too much of this machine and approach. Perhaps, given the operating environment, it just can’t be done without having more raw capacity than this machine can deliver.

I’m looking for any advice or tricks anyone has discovered to make this more manageable. Thanks in advance for any guidance.

Task taking 2x as long since update

Since updating the fw and app on my luba2 awd 5000H it is now taking 2x as long as previous to complete the same task.... Currently at 6 hours and it's not even half way done. When normally it's done by now...

Damage to HEALTHY lawn by Luba 2's turning/trenching

Whenever someone posts a picture or video showing how the Luba is digging up their turf while turning, invariably someone will comment "ya, but your lawn isn't healthy; it's just a bunch of weeds on dirt" or somesuch.

My lawn is in very good and healthy condition. My front lawn in particular is the envy of the neighborhood -- truly as good as it gets for St Augustine. But the lawn perimeters and no-go area perimeters have been damaged by my Luba 2 3000H's turn-arounds. I just created a short video to show it:

https://photos.app.goo.gl/CvJ1ZMiYvUQ7m98Z8

For the 2.3 years I've owned my Luba, it's cut my front lawn twice each week -- with two separate tasks that mow parallel to the street on Tuesdays and then at 90 degrees to the street on Fridays. Also one of them cuts the perimeters without no-gos and the other cuts the no-go borders without the perimeters. This was working beautifully and caused minimal damage with its long, smooth MPTs for these 2.3 years.

With the firmware updates over the past 2 weeks making drastic "improvements" to the multi-point-turning, it's doing SEVERE damage to the perimeters and no-go boundaries. Pretty much ALL of the damage you see in this video was caused in just THREE mowings of my front yard since these MPT changes.

It's painfully obvious that if I continue to use my Luba 2 to cut my beautiful front lawn, that it will completely DESTROY these perimeters -- as it's done throughout my back yard already!

I also show in the video a portion of lawn that actually belongs to my nextdoor neighbor. He owns a strip of about 4 feet wide beside his driveway, ajoining my front yard. About 3 weeks ago, I saw him in his yard while he was watching my robot mow, and I offered that I could easily re-map my yard to include his little 4-foot-wide strip. He enthusiastically said "yes!" and so I made the change.

There are two small no-go areas in that little neighbor strip, around his tree trunk and a cut-down tree stump. These were no problem with the earlier firmware. But in the past two weeks, with just three more mows of this area, you can plainly see the damage it's causing around those two no-go borders: the grass is being TORN OUT by Luba's fierce MPTs. The neighbor came out to me again just after I filmed this and asked, sheepishly, if I'd mind NOT cutting his 5-foot piece. "Thanks but no thanks". I'll be re-re-mapping shortly to exclude it again. How embarrassing. :-/

Finally, I need to point out the extreme TIME difference in the cutting, old vs new firmware. It used to cut my front lawn in about 3 hours (including one return to charge). Yesterday it took over 8 hours and it didn't even get quite finished ... about 95% done before its 8PM no-mowing-period curfew kicked in and it returned to its dock. Well, the 8+ hours included FIVE "Robot is stuck", TWO "Out of area" and another "Complex terrain" pauses, and it took me some time before I could get out to continue it each time. (Which brings up yet another point: there's no push notification on my iPhone. I have to open the app and click on the bell icon to see these critical messages!)

I'll say once again: the latest firmware is an absolute DISASTER and the Luba 2 is effectively USELESS. Mammotion, please push another firmware "update" that lets us REVERT to a level from 2 weeks ago, before the Swedish toddler incident.

Merci Mammotion ! 😁

Bonjour a tous,

Good Riddance

Great news! Since I was within the 30-day return window, I replaced my Luba 3 AWD 3000H with a Navimow X430, no more software headaches, no more zero turns, and no more unresponsive, uncaring customer service, good riddance!

You have got to turn off tank turn

UPDATE: Multipoint turn is back on!

Now that multipoint turns are back, Multipoint should be the only option, or at least the default. Tank turns don’t work 🤬
——————

Please enable multipoint turn. It should be our choice, not yours.

I have a very flat yard, yet somehow it dug its self into a hole trying to tank turn. You messed up my yard and killed my grass.

In manual mode, drive it forward or backwards got it out of its own ditch it made.

Please, if you love your customers, stop making decisions for us that you think are in our best interest.

Mammotion, why did you delete your post about a new update yesterday?

Where did it go and where's your new found "transparency"?

Please... Fix your product. Bring back multi turn and not this half baked version!

Yuka Mini 2 LiDAR near miss with cat

Second post this evening and following on from my previous one.

After the pretty disastrous firmware update, I decided to slightly redraw the boundary of my lawn so it would avoid colliding with its timber house. I sent the machine out again, to see if things would improve, out of curiosity.

One of my cats was sat on the boundary of the lawn as the machine was moving forward, cutting the perimeter. She likes to sit in a particular spot and always the mower recognises her and goes around. Not tonight it didn't. Both myself and my wife watched in disbelief and horror as it continued on towards her. The mower didn't deviate at all from its path. Thank goodness she had her tail by her side and not straight out as it would have taken it off. The right back wheel grazed her as it went past causing my cat to freak out. I hit the emergency stop button as quickly as I could and then sent it back to its charging station.

I know some will say the area should be pet free etc etc but these things are meant to be able to run at night or on properties with huge gardens where it is not practical to be around all of the time. These things are meant to be wildlife friendly. You are meant to have absolute trust in these things. My cat is not small and should have easily been picked up by the sensors but my mower acted like she wasn't there. This has really freaked both of us out as we have 5 cats who come and go from the garden. I have been using this thing for months and it has always always recognised my cats and either stopped dead or gone around them.

Of note, after updating to the latest firmware, I powered down the machine for a few minutes to clear the cache. I checked and double checked all the app parameters just in case something had changed. Sensitivity is set as standard which it always has been. I mow on the slowest speed possible. I don't have any obstacle free zones set up.

My wife doesn't want me using this machine again. She is understandably really upset as this could have been a disaster. It was me that convinced her that it was a good idea to buy this thing and that it was absolutely safe. For the time being, I intend to go back to using my push mower.

I intend to speak to Mammotion in the morning and will update the post.

Straight lines?

Is there a way to set straight lines on the map after I have mapped it out by walking the Luba? I just want the ability to make the lines straight so it doesn’t look like it’s dodging stones every few feet. Also would be nice to adjust the map myself without the need for the mower. If I am missing something please let me know!
For reference, I have the Spot On Nova dog collars, and they allow you to adjust the lines via the app after you walk the property. I’m hoping Mammotion has a similar feature.

Question to Mammotion: Can LUBA 3’s 360° LiDAR be used as a safety sensor for reversing while mowing?

I’m currently considering whether to keep the LUBA 3, and the recent Multi-point Turn changes are making me concerned about a possible hardware limitation.

My understanding is that one of the challenges with reversing while the cutting discs are running may be the requirement for reliable obstacle detection in the direction of travel. LUBA 3 does not have a conventional rear bumper or rear-facing camera, but it does have a 360° LiDAR system.

Could Mammotion clarify:

Can the LUBA 3’s 360° LiDAR fulfil the obstruction-sensing/safety requirements for rearward travel while the cutting discs remain running, including the requirements being introduced in EN 50636-2-107 Amendment 4?

If not, what is the limiting factor?

Is there insufficient LiDAR coverage in the near-field directly behind the mower?

Is the LiDAR technically capable of detecting the required obstacles, but not certified/validated as a functional safety sensor?

Is this currently only a software/algorithm limitation?

Or is additional rear-facing safety hardware fundamentally required?

And most importantly:

Is Mammotion working toward using the LUBA 3’s LiDAR for compliant rear obstacle detection so that future Multi-point Turns can reverse without repeatedly stopping and restarting the cutting discs?

What else could I get?

I've been very happy with my Luba mini 1500, but that's because I haven't updated anything in ages. Ironically, because the update failed. I didn't bother trying again, then I read the horror stories.

I was planning to get another one for a second property, but that's not going to happen now. This latest update where nothing is fixed, none of the requested features are added, and not a single thing was available for anything other than the latest generation, has shown me that this company is not trustworthy.

I do still need a second mower, but I'm struggling to find a good option. I need 4wd, good ground clearance and the ability to handle rough, steep terrain. I don't care if it's rtk, lidar or whatever, as long as it works. It absolutely must be able to run in the rain.

The only real option I've seen is the Segway Navimow X420E. It looks like a great mower, but it's a lot more expensive than the Luba mini series. It's more of a competitor to the full size Luba. As far as I can tell, that's the only other option with 4 wheels though. Does anyone have a good candidate for a replacement for the Luba mini? I'd really like to take advantage of end of season sales that will be coming up shortly, so any suggestions would be appreciated.

Obstacle Detection 😂

Sent my Luba 3 AWD home and it paused as it approached our car that was temporarily parked in its channel. I used the remote controls to move it past the car, and continued. It turned around and ran into the car 🤦‍♂️.

Firmware got me.

Well after several months of my mower working perfectly, it has all gone wrong with the latest firmware update for my Yuka Mini 2 1000 LiDAR.

Twice I have had to hit the emergency stop button as it has ploughed in to its wooden house, wheels spinning as I watch It tear up the grass. It has never done this before.

I have also noticed it is much more aggressive backing up and three times it has gone in areas that are out of bounds.

I wish to God I never updated the firmware. I now join the unenviable group of Mammotion owners that are pissed off with their machines and this company.

Mammotion...sort it out.
