Inquisitor's vision

When Sazed intentionally gets himself captured by the Inquisitors to rescue Vin from Kredik Shaw, they strip him of all his metalminds by taking away his jewelry. I always assumed that was so Vin wouldn't have access to any metals through him.

But Sazed had also swallowed some of his Feruchemical metals.

Can Steel Inquisitors actually see metals inside someone's body? I get why Sazed would do it since he didn't really know how their vision worked, but wouldn't the Inquisitors have noticed the metals inside him once they captured him? If they can see them, why didn't they think it was odd or force him to get rid of them?

Just finished reading Hero of Ages. My thoughts and rankings for the first trilogy.

My rankings:

  1. Well of Ascension

  2. Mistborn

  3. Hero of Ages

That said, I LOVED ALL THREE BOOKS and they are easily some of my best reads this year.

These are my first three Sanderson books and I get why people praise him as a master world builder. It's the little things that make the world feel wondrous and expansive.

  • The Kandra being a sort of mystery in the first book to getting their whole culture and important role to play in the third was great.
  • The mystery with the allomantic metals.
  • The story about Alendi and how it all ties in to prophecies.
  • Terrismen being stewards but secret keepers of dead knowledge

Mistborn got me hooked. Just the premise itself of a thieving crew taking down a god emperor was what initially drew me in. Allomancy as a power system is something I find so interesting. My main gripe with it is that the action scenes are a little hard to follow.

Kelsier is such a cool character and I love his mentor dynamic with Vin. Vin's blooming romance with Elend was cute. All the trials and tribulations of forming the rebellion and the motivations of each of the crew was interesting to follow. Noble houses being played against each other. Mistborn being like these magic noble agents for the houses and "they can be anyone!" was an interesting concept.

That said, Kelsier feels a little too badass at times. How did this guy just destroy the Pits of Hathsin on a whim? Like you can do that? Vin vs the lord ruler was also plenty tense, but I personally don't like the last second unexplained power up that helps the protagonist defeat the bad guy.

I think I loved Well of Ascension the most because I liked the political and strategic back and forth + the themes of being a good person vs being a good king, freedom vs tyranny, is something that I personally found so interesting. Elend forgoing his own authority to be just, only for it to make everything worse, and Ruin's first real introduction to the world being it saying "I am FREE" was I think a chef's kiss moment. Also, Vin killing Straff by flying in out of nowhere with a Koloss sword was truly iconic. She aura farmed so much in this book that it's crazy.

Speaking of Well of Ascension, I was initially confused when they tried to make it seem like Vin had a crush on Kelsier when he was alive. Idk if I'm just misreading this, but I never picked that up at all. Zane trying to seduce Vin and creating a love triangle was interesting, but I never believed for one second that she was going to go off with this guy. Also, Zane being "crazy" and that being explained as Ruin's powers in Hero of Ages was pretty cool. Part of me was hoping Zane got reformed somehow and kills his father, him attacking Vin was pretty sad.

My main problem with Hero of Ages was that I didn't find Hemalurgy all too interesting. The idea that "there's this bad force in the world that wants to end everything and Hemalurgy allows it to control everything bad" felt a little too convenient to me, even if it made for a coherent world. The theme about faith and religion was interesting, but I felt like the end cheapened it for me when it's implied Sazed became something like an abrahamic God that will keep balance for millenia to come.

Also, in the end, Sazed says something to the effect of "btw Rashek was a good guy just trying his best, he might've lost his way but try to see things from his perspective." Like wtf??? Guy ruined the world but he tried, I guess? I mean, in the context of the universe where an evil force named Ruin exists and wants to destroy the world, sure, but come on!

I didn't much care for Spook in Urteau. It was interesting at first, but they literally gave him all the screen time when I, personally, wanted to see more Breeze and Sazed (who was too depressed to do anything cool).

I also didn't like King Elend. I get how his responsibilities changed him, but weak, soft boy Elend was a more interesting character. Now that he's a strong Mistborn he just feels too... perfect? Idk.

That said, the Vin earring reveal was great. The Kandra and Koloss plot line was interesting. Vin's sliver of god hood and her reaction to Elend's death was plenty sad.

I'll start reading the Way of Kings soon, but I am excited to read the other novels in this universe.

How strong is the average Steel Misting?

I know power varies from person to person, between eras and even in eras.
But lets say Era 2 at the end.

We know from Vin that she is strong enough to pull herself apart if she wanted. When she opened the hidden door with Elend together she had to burn pewter to no pull herself apart.
I'm assuming the same would go for pushing, that someone can squash them selfs.

But I don't know how much force that would be.
Like I can push up ~125kg (1225 newtons) (body weight included), but I could probably hold a lot more.
And I'm not sure how the force is being applied on someone pushing with steel, so what's the limit before I would hurt myself?

And what about reach? I know the power goes down with distance and size of the object pushed on, but what's like the reach a steel push can still keep you floating?

Would I be able to float 10, 25, 50 Meters above train tracks?

Mistborn: The Rogue Allomancer Chapter 4

I just finished editing chapter 4 so here it is. I definitely had a lot to edit with this chapter as it was probably one of my weakest before editing. now I can confidently say that it is very strong.

enjoy!

A friend forced me to read Mistborn and all I got was this T-shirt.

A friend have been asking me to read this series for a while, a couple of months ago I caved, she lend me the first 3 book, it took me less than 2 months to read them (plus secret history that I brought myself), she gifted me a shirt when I give her the books back, it's a little small but I appreciate it nonetheless, plus I got a list of like 20 other books in the series, this is my life now I guess

What the Lord Ruler does for mankind

On a reread of the original trilogy, and I was thinking about what we know about the Lord Ruler's normal activities. Constant emotional soothing.

I think that his intention is to sooth Ruin in it's prison so it does not act as much as it would if it had more freedom of emotion.

But I was also thinking about Copper clouds and how TLR knows much more about Allomancy and Investiture in general.

I think he can shift the frequency he obscures, and was probably constantly copper clouding on a different frequency, Ruins frequency. This way he was also constantly stopping Ruins power from spreading out far and wide, or letting it's senses get far out into the world and affect things on a large scale.

Steelrunners shouldn't be that powerful and why

I might be totally off in thinking this but I'm relistening to shadows of self and I've had this thought.

Steelrunners shouldn't be able to comprehend anything once they reach a certain level of speed.

Now what I mean by this is that once you are going fast enough the brain of a normal person shouldn't be able to both pick up on changes in the surroundings and then act on them while maintaining a high enough velocity. The human reaction time should necessitate some period of comprehension then action.

It just feels so out of line with Brandon's usual rhetoric on limitation to power sets that steelrunners get the increased perception automatically as a part of their speed. Especially because zinc stores the corresponding mental speed already and so we can have reacting speedsters assuming they're using both.

I think the more interesting way here is that steelrunners alone must plan out their actions and can't react until their plans have concluded. This lets them still be speedsters with the ability to do things like shooting 4 different people from 4 different places in the room at the same time but not being able to outspeed any attack or blow because you can't react faster than a normal human. Limitation in this instance I think would lead to more interesting outcomes where steelrunners are powerful but limited in the scope of that power.

Anyway I'm interested to hear what people think about all this and if I'm just thinking about it too hard.

Two characters I think would be good together

Hear me but I want Wayne to go through something to make him grow up some, and I think he and Marasi would be great together. I'm early in BoM but I googled to see if there were other people shipping them and didn't see much.

I'll be real angry if Wax screws over Steris

Era 2 Mists

So I was rereading era 2, and I was curious about how mists react to hermulergy. I remember reading a WOB about how mists don’t repel from hemulergy thanks to the combination that is Harmony. However, they’re repelled from Wax and Wayne in TLM, so now I’m confused. I’ve read all of Mistborn and Stormlight, including Secret History.

Mistborn Movie Soundtrack

Hey all! My 14-year-old younger brother has just composed three mock custom soundtracks for the upcoming Mistborn movie! He works completely solo on Logic ProX, and he's spent ages creating these tracks. I thought I'd post his music here, for the community to go and show some love!

Let us know: do the songs capture the vibe of Mistborn? Could you see these in the upcoming movie?

Thanks!

Era 2 question

Why can feruchemists only use a metal mind? , I thought that being born as a feruchemist meant that you could use all metals, I can see a world where Sazed changed humans so that they could only use a metal mind, but even so is it a RAFO? Or is it something that was explained in Era 1 and I totally lost?

I just finished Era 2 and My Fav Person is WAYNE

I just finished Era 2 yesterday, and I'm planning to go into stormlight archive, but I just wanna say Wayne is my fav person in the series. Of course,e Era 1 was epic, historically detailed, and mysterious, but I also love Era 2 and hope that when new books come, Wayne will be like Saze, and there is a chance we can hear him beyond the real world. He has a very absurd intelligence; the writing is brilliant (even in my language - I am from Istanbul)

I learned Brandon Sanderson has a special place in his heart for Wayne. I just wanna know what you think about Wayne and his ending and the future of the Mistborn series in general. I wanna hear your opinions.

Help me find connections to Locke from League

Locke from league

The new champion from league seems to be heavily inspored by Kelsier. From the spikes, almost mist cloak. alomantic looking symbols, dashing to targets with spikes.

Are there any other references anyone else has picked up on? I was hoping to gather as many as possible in one place

I was lookmg st his voice lines amd noticed some.maybe others can spot more

His lines ti both the Crownsguard siblings seem to references stormlight

To Lux: ""Don't hide too long, bright-eyes. You won't like what finds you."

To Garen: "Honor's not the answer, big guy. But you know that, don't you?"

Intesting both bright-eyes and honor being mentioned to the siblings

"There are no secrets with me"

Could be similar to "Theres always another secret"

"Back to the ash."

&

"Back before the ash settles."

Ash from mistborn he is also called the "Ashen Exorcist"

Posible spoiler

>! "Anchored my own soul. Works every time."!<

Id love to hear if anyone else has noticed more

Question about the Temporal metals

I started wondering about the Temporal metals when Cadmium and Bendalloy were introduced as replacements for Atium and Malatium as the basic Temporal metals, since I still haven’t found an explanation that feels satisfying.

Originally, the Temporal quadrant felt incredibly elegant:

  • Internal Pulling: Gold - see your own past.
  • Internal Pushing: Electrum - see your own future.
  • External Pulling: Malatium - see someone else's past.
  • External Pushing: Atium - see someone else's future.

Compared to that, “creating time bubbles” with Cadmium and Bendalloy has always felt disconnected from Gold and Electrum. I understand that Atium is a God Metal and therefore shouldn’t technically be one of the sixteen base metals, but from a thematic and mechanical standpoint it fit the quadrant perfectly.

It also leaves Electrum in a weird spot. In Era 1, its main purpose was as a counter to Atium. Once Atium is no longer part of the base sixteen metals, Electrum feels like it loses most of its purpose.

I’ve seen the theory that the Atium we see in Era 1 isn’t pure Atium at all, but an Atium-Electrum alloy, while Malatium is an Atium-Gold alloy. That would fit the idea that they are opposites and is consistent with the note in the Table of Allomantic Metals that Atium alloys produce expanded temporal effects.

However, I have two problems with that theory.

First, the Atium burned throughout Era 1 is the beads collected at the Pits of Hathsin, where Ruin’s power crystallizes into Atium. It seems strange that the beads would naturally form as an alloy instead of pure Atium (and effectively an alloy of an alloy).

Second, the Atium Mistings in Hero of Ages. Sixteen percent of humanity was affected by the mists, and the people who remained unconscious for longer periods turned out to be Atium Mistings. That only really makes sense to me if Atium was originally intended to be one of the sixteen metals.

Why weren’t there Cadmium and Bendalloy Mistings instead? If the answer is that those metals weren’t known yet, then why were Chromium and Nicrosil included among the sixteen? If Cadmium and Bendalloy were excluded because they were unknown, shouldn’t Chromium and Nicrosil have been excluded as well, making it 14% instead of 16%?

Because of all this, especially the second point, I've always felt that Brandon originally intended Atium to be one of the sixteen basic metals, and that after deciding God Metals should be separate, Cadmium and Bendalloy were introduced as a retcon to fill the Temporal quadrant.

Am I missing something here? Is there any WoB or in-universe explanation that ties this together, or was it just something adjusted between eras? It feels a bit like a forced change to me, but I’m not sure if I’m overlooking something.

I haven’t read the Mistborn books in English, so sorry if some of the terminology I use isn’t the exact official wording :)

What Chapters Can I skip in Hero of Ages?

I can't suffer another several chapters re-explaining the entire world and magic system. It's book three, I can't have allomancy explained to me again like I'm 4 years old.

How many chapters can I skip before I get back to the actual story? Thanks!

I really enjoyed the first book but...

Mistborn book 1 I really liked but the second one so far is kind of a slow to get through. Is it worth it continuing because I heard a lot of people say that "the last 100 pages is so worth it" but does that mean that the other 400-500 (depending on the edition) is just going to be the book jingling keys at you until something finally happens?

Mistborn Era 1 Reread

MAJOR HOA SPOILERS

Just finished my first reread of era 1 and mistakenly thought that I might not cry since I knew what was coming. How wrong I was. I sobbed. Again.

I did a tandem reread of Secret History as well. Went back and forth every handful of chapters so I was reading a certain someone’s POV as events unfolded for Vin and Co.

Things that made me cry:
- Elend falling to his knees and almost giving up in the ash. Then choosing hope.
- Sazed reflecting on Spook’s words and CHOOSING faith after feeling betrayed by his life’s work for so long
- Sazed working through the Terris prophecy with the kandra, not realizing what it means in full
- Marsh using whatever ounce of Self and good will he has left to use Spook’s steel-inscribed message to rip out Vin’s earring
- Elend dying
- Vin watching Elend die, but feeling at peace
- Vin fading away after throwing all her godly might at Ruin
- Sazed picking up the power and then realizing he’s not meant to use it and release it, but to be the Hero for all Ages
- Ham reuniting with his family
- FLOWERS. GRASS. VIN AND ELEND AMONG THE FLOWERS AND GRASS

My heart. These characters. I’ve never done a series reread before and am surprised how much it hurts all over again.

Rereading this series was so fun. I picked up on so many Easter eggs and clues about Ruin, the LR, Scadrial.
