Is nuke worth the struggle?
Should I choose nuke as my rate or a CT rate. I'm not scared of the academics however I am concerned if nuke is going take a toll on my health.
Nuclear MAP
We heard our Sailors loud and clear. Feedback received!
We did not want our Nuclear Trained Sailors feeling excluded by our decision to abstain from BBA.
We just announced the Nuclear MAP program.
Please review NAVADMIN 196/26 and share it with all your shipmates.
As always, I appreciate everyone’s feedback, it matters!!!
Current and Former Navy Nukes: What Should I Accomplish During My First Enlistment?
Hey everyone, I’m leaving for the Navy in February and was wondering what you would recommend accomplishing during my first enlistment so I’m in a strong position whether I decide to separate or re-enlist. My brother is also in the Nuke program, but he just finished A-school, so I can’t really ask him many questions yet about what a full first enlistment is like. I’d appreciate any advice from current or former nukes on what I should focus on, whether that’s qualifications, college, certifications, finances, or anything else you wish you had done earlier.
Can you lat transfer to a Nuclear Submarine Officer after completing your initial commitment as an NPS Instructor or being an NRE?
Hey everyone,
From what I understand, these are positions with an initial 5-year commitment, and after completing that commitment, the specific pipeline ends.
From what I've heard, officers in this situation generally either leave the Navy or pursue a lateral transfer to another community.
I'm particularly interested in whether a lat transfer to the Submarine Officer community is possible after completing that initial 5-year commitment.
For anyone familiar with this:
-Is it actually possible for an NPS Instructor or NRE officer to lat transfer to become a Submarine Officer after the initial commitment?
-Is there an established path for an NPS instructor or NRE officer to lat transfer to the submarine community?
-Is this something that is regularly done, or would it be an unusual or very competitive transfer?
-Would the fact that you're already a Nuclear Officer make the transfer easier?
-Would you have to meet the normal requirements for Submarine Officers like age ?
Thanks!
Trying to get into nuclear
For years i've been fascinated by nuclear power, but unfortunately where I live (southern connecticut) theres almost no way at all to get into the nuclear industry, because it practically does not exist here. So for a while I've been considering enlisting in the NNPP to get my 6 years and get a Civilian nuclear job afterwards
I have a passion for learning new things and im willing to commit myself to a long haul in order to secure a better happier future, I know that the NNPP gets you a large sum of education in nuclear power and thats my main goal for it, aswell as other benefits like the GI Bill, etc.
currently, I do not have my life together and ive been stagnant, ive gotten out of shape and I need momentum and direction (19m), is it worth it to go down this path for me? what should I know, and should I look elsewhere? college isnt really an option for me as I dont want to put debt on my parents
Anyone know about a backup for NRE interviews?
Same as above.
I want to get ahead on the Nuke Program before I leave for the Navy, any recomendations?
I leave for the Navy in February, I'm trying to get ahead of the game by studying all that I can related to the Navy Nuke Program/course. If anyone has any recommendations for study materials, video essays, or studying tips, that would be great.
Lincoln Watch Rotation
Does anyone know what kind of watch rotation those poor souls on the Lincoln are having to endure? Over 200 days with no port visits and 260+ days deployed. I just can’t imagine.
Can someone help me find this patch please?
I’ve been looking for this patch forever and I want to add it to my NNPTC collection of belt buckles and challenge coins! Please let me know if you have any information about how I can get one before I depart NNPTC
MS in Material Science and Engineering
Has anyone here gone on to get a Material Science degree or similar?
The ELT that I once was loved the M of CMR and if I wasn't about to finish a much quicker under-grad, would probably look hard at a BS in the field.
I saw ASU has an online MSMSE and although I was considering going for an online MBA, think I would enjoy Material Science curriculum a lot more than the corporatese brain-melting nonsense I'd have to stomach in an MBA program. Get too much exposure to corporate hell in my current job.
No idea what I would even do with a Material Science masters, but feeling drawn to it. Currently in the datacenter world.
Anyone here go this route and enjoy it? Or at least know anything about it?
Failed out of power school
I failed out 3 Classes overall in power school. And was just wondering how it would work if a decided to get out of nuke. I am a MM and submarine volunteer. And also wondering if I would keep E-4 and my shipping bonus. I plan on still trying my best until they remove me from my class.
Service member compensation more competitive than many realize, War Department says
As a high school graduate I did pretty good for myself
Return to steam CATS
it even possible to build a true Ford-class carrier with steam instead of the EMALS? Or to convert them? I was under the impression the whole ship was designed around them being electric.
Question about the Bangor engagement brief yesterday.
I was at the Bangor engagement brief yesterday and had to leave in the middle of CMC Jackson’s part. He said he was going to put out some info about ELTs. Was anyone there yesterday that can tell me what he put out about ELTs, or anything else important that was said?
Is it too late to be a regular swo?
Hi navy nukes, I'm a SWO(N) and I just got to power school after my first tour. I'm already dreading my time here and it's only day 1.
Mandatory study hours? Being at school every weekend? Group pt?
It's only week 1 and I'm already expected to come in before my wife wakes up, and get home when my wife is getting ready to go to bed. I'm not concerned about the material but I have a family at home I can't just give up on my personal life for this, not to mention the fact that I want to try to have a baby.
I love Charleston but I just want to go back to Norfolk and do my second SWO tour and get out of the navy. Is this still an option for me?
I'm nervous to bring this up with the faculty because I doubt they'd be willing to give me a second chance if I change my mind.
I'm aware they'll probably take $30k back (signing bonus) but honestly I'm prepared to pay that price for some actual QOL for the next few years. They'll also probably just give me whatever ship is looking for a 2nd tour and that my preferences won't be factored in, I'm fine with that as long as it's CONUS. Do they change my contract time? Or would it still be two tours? Can anyone confirm the process from here?
Mosquitoes on nnptc track
Whats the best ways you all have found to deal with those greedy ass never ending mosquitoes on the track during morning pt
Failing out
Made it to power school and I am failing out was kind of wondering what my career looks like from here.
25F enlisted as a Navy Nuke with a college degree — am I making a mistake by not pursuing officer?
I’m supposed to leave for Navy boot camp soon as a nuke enlisted sailor. I’ve been getting increasingly anxious that I may be making the wrong decision by going enlisted when I potentially could have pursued an officer route.
For some background, I already have a bachelor’s degree in Health. I was also working toward a second bachelor’s degree in Biochemistry and I’m literally one class away from finishing it. I had to stop taking that final class so I could focus on preparing for boot camp.
The enlisted package I signed is pretty significant financially. I’m getting a $65,000 enlistment bonus, and the Navy is also offering to pay off my student loans from both of my bachelor’s degrees.
However, the more I research, the more I’m seeing people say that going from enlisted to officer can be extremely difficult and competitive. That has me second-guessing whether I should even be going enlisted in the first place. It also does not help that my recruiter originally told me I would qualify for a few different paths to officer and it was not until I read the op-navist myself that I realized he was wrong. He basically chalked it up to at least all options weren’t off the table
My concern is that I could spend several years as a nuke, perform well, finish my Biochemistry degree, etc., and still have a very difficult time getting selected for an officer program. At the same time, I don’t want to turn down a $65k bonus + student loan repayment chasing an officer path that I may not even be competitive for.
I’m also trying to look at this from a long-term perspective. I’m 25 now, so if I enlist for six years, I’ll be around 31 when I’m getting out.
Idk if it matters but both degrees are with 3.7+ GPA
Vehicle necessity during schooling
Hey all! I just signed my enlistment contract and I’m expecting to ship this December. The only thing I’m missing is some advice on is how likely it is that I’ll need a vehicle during a school, power, or prototype, both in goose creek and ballston spa. I’ll be single no dependents. Ideally, I’d like to be in barracks directly on base. If I’m going to get a car I’d just get one that lasts, from part of my ship out bonus, so some first hand input will help me determine the liquidity of the savings I put my bonus in!
